!!! Really enjoyed the banding event!

June 17, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Hi Marion and CPF

I just wanted to let you know that the Grade 1 Classes loved attending the peregrine banding event. It was so exciting for all, (including us)!!.
We have been watching the babies the last 2 weeks as they grow, and now on the day my class is graduating from Grade 1 to Grade 2 it looks to me via the webcam that not all the babies are still in the nest today….could it be that they decided to graduate today too?
Thanks again,

Saturday June 14. Frantic Flapping But All Still Home

June 15, 2014 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Yesterday I arrived shortly after 730 in the morning and found Baylie keeping watch over at Eagle Road and Bloor.  The four young ones had been flapping and active up until this point but not as much as they were the evening before. Right around 8 AM Jack arrived with a small tiny package of food that he took into the ledge and left for the chicks to consume on their own.  After dropping off the food Jack flew out over Bloor Street then swooped up and landed on the slanted glass windows just below the nest ledge. There Jack remained for about 20 minutes and then he was off to the north and off-site. This was to be Jack’s only appearance that he made yesterday. After Jack left O’Connor decided to go out on a hunt but didn’t return with anything in the morning.  With just a tiny snack in their crops, the chicks became very active and vocal throughout the bulk of the morning until just after noon when O’Connor arrived with a rather large pigeon.  Skyla and Sunni attempted to take off with the food down the ledge but O’Connor would have none of that. She retrieved the food and made sure that every chick was beak fed in turn.  The feeding took a good half an hour after which the chicks spent the rest of the afternoon flapping, preening and sleeping.  I was joined by Kathy in the afternoon and we sat anticipating the first flight for Islington and Bloor. We were joined later in the afternoon by Rob and Angie and the four of us sat and waited… …and waited. A lot of flapping, a lot of screaming and a lot of running of the ledge but still no flight.  At one point O’Connor, who is now sitting on top of the web camera, started to alarm call. This brought all four chicks to their feet watching as mommy took off out to south and attempted to dispatch two turkey vultures flying high through the area.  The airspace was cleared and all was safe.

!!! Holcims Peregrine Banding Day - 4 hatchlings!!

June 11, 2014 - Mississauga - Holcim

Marion Nash Reports:

It was another successful banding day at Holcim. This years banding was very special for the Family of
Ron Osborne, the former CEO who sadly passed away last year.
His children Charlotte and David got to name one the baby falcons and held it at the end of the banding for a photo shoot, we were honoured to be able to help make this happen for them.

We would like to thank all the folks at Holcim for the great care they take of the peregrine family and for hosting the banding event. We would also like to thank John Miller our volunteer rock climber for being there for the birds again this year to extract the little ones from the nest for banding without him this could not happen.

This year there were 4 chicks 3 males and a female. All the hatchlings were weighed and checked over and were very healthy and of good weight.

905 grams female 26 days old named Tessa
635 grams male 28 days old named Roaming Rony ( named after Ron Osborne)
640 grams male 27 days old named Lindsay
650 grams male 26 days old named Kurt

Stay tuned for the banding photos to follow…………

June 16, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

CPF Postmaster Reports:

June 16th - 2014
Just a very quickly update until we can get the detailed reports filed and posted of the previous days on the watch. Very sorry for not being able to get any of the postings up sooner, but it has been a very busy time for all of us while still doing bandings and now with overlapping fledge watches, it has us all out in the field and not able to get any computer time.

Over the past three days at Amexon Don Mills nest site it has been a very busy time indeed with the three young hatchlings having all taken their first flights - (as of this evening). With the two young males going first as expected, the boys have both managed to stay off the ground and out of trouble!!
Please stay tuned for the detailed reports and photos from Luci, Cathy and Irma….

With McKinney having fledged first, followed by Cooper a day later, both boys are actually doing very well indeed! Oh my goodness, they are now flying like pro’s,, - (well at least McKinney is),, with Cooper now getting stronger and more confident with every flight. Both are now staying high and flying between the 150 Ferrand Drive and the 250 Ferrand Drive roof tops and back again.

As of this evening, both young male fledglings had successfully managed to actually return back to the nest ledge itself!!! Quite a feat given the high elevation of the nest ledge and difficult approach needed to actually get back into the nest ledge itself!! Well, OK, I can’t lie, they both cheated,, but they did manage to get back to the nest ledge safely! When I say that they both cheated, they actually dropped down from the upper roof retaining wall, directly above the nest ledge and kinda fluttered down back down into the nest ledge. Hey, what ever works :-)

Ok, they did spend some time on the lower window ledges, had some very minor bumps and grinds but neither of them came to ground and needed to be rescued! So all in all, they are doing fantastic!!

Finally little Zeballos, (the young female hatchling) took her first flight ,, and as expected given her heavier weight, she didn’t do so well. After several short flights, and in an effort to get back to the nest building, she lost much of her altitude and ended up on several occasions clinging to sides the nest building walls (in what we have fondly named over the years as “the bat maneuver”),, clinging to the vertical wall of the two buildings like a bat.
Please stay tuned for a more detailed report from Kathy, Irma and Lucie, Richard, Bonny and Ann. They have some great photos!!!!

As of darkness this evening, she was safely roosting on a second story window ledge on the south east side of 150 Ferrand Drive overlooking the day care area and the parking lot.

Cathy will be back at 5am in the morning to deal with her at first light.
Stay tuned for updates and her report…………..

!!! Day one on the fledge watch - All four present and accounted for!

June 16, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Day one on the fledge watch - All four present and accounted for.
Monday June 16th - 2014
Being able to access the web camera to monitor the birds offers a huge advantage over the other nest sites that don’t have a camera that’s for sure!

Most of the morning was spent trying to respond to some of the 160 back logged e-mail and trying to get through some editing of the more than 1500 photos that have been shot while on the road last week from Windsor to Stoney Creek to Mississauga to Scarborough with a very aggressive record setting banding schedule for a single week period!

The Duncan Mills hatchlings have certainly been growing since I last saw them up close at their banding and they are almost ready to start taking their first flights!

I spent most of the later afternoon and evening with the Duncan Mills family along with members of the fledge watch team as we organized and planned for the next days to come.

I got a great opportunity to see Quest again up close as she spent several hours roosting quite peacefully on top of the nest box watching her brood play together on the nest ledge beneath her. I can’t help but feel that she was thinking the very same thoughts as I was having, - “the dawn before the storm”! One of the last times that she may have to get some rest before the kids will be out terrorizing the world, and have both her and Sky in a panic flying all over to keep track of her kids.

By 8:45pm it was evident that the four hatchlings were not going anywhere and we responded to Cathy Kerr’s call to come down to the Don Mills nest site to lend a hand, as her last young fledgling had a number of short not so good flights ending up losing allot of altitude and eventually landing and clinging on a window ledge just two storeys up above the main parking lot.

Stay tuned………..

All is well

June 16, 2014 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

Thea continues to loose her fluffy white down. I imagine she’ll loose more the next two days with the heat expected.  I checked the webcam around 5p.m. and saw Erin feeding her.

A very quiet evening

June 16, 2014 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

Trout, Buzz, Oliver and Ralphie continue to enjoy the comforts of the ledge. Did not see a lot of activity from them this evening. They did a lot more vocalizing and flapping last evening than tonight. Rhea Mae and Tiago enjoyed the sunset, sitting on the Sheraton letters above the nest ledge, until 8:45 p.m. when both took off. Tiago flew to the north and out of my sight and Rhea Mae took up her roost on 130 Adelaide. I closed the watch at 9:30p.m. when it was too dark to see the nest ledge or the adults.

Sunni on the Condo, Skyla on the Window Ledge

June 16, 2014 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Baylie Kastner Reports:

It has been an extremely busy day at the Sun Life Centre.
