Update on Manuela from Bruce at Mississauga MEC

June 12, 2021 - Mississauga - Executive Centre

Bruce Massey Reports:

She was a little Rocky at first. Fledged Wednesday in AM, didn’t see her at all. Winston got a sense that she was in the Trees @ Robert Speck Parkway & Shipp. Of course you know about Thursday with her being down on ground around 0700 Hrs. I found her having lunch with Midnight around Noon on the Mezzanine Level of CIBC.That Evening she made a couple of Flights, but spent night low somewhere in Vicinity of the Nest Building. On Friday, I found her on the W side of CIBC @ Mezzanine Level. I finally got to see her fly for the first time, and accompanied by Midnight, ended up again on the East Side of the CIBC Building. Around 6:00 PM, she flew up to another level rooftop of the Acenture Building. I was relieved by Winston. She spent the night on the “Twisted Sister’s” 2 1st Floor Balcony.
I found on rooftop level of the Morguard Building 13 floors up. Midnight has made a couple of passes, so she knows where she is.

Way to go Sydney!!!

June 11, 2021 - Toronto - Don Mills

Cathy Kerr Reports:
Day 8….and Sydney is in the air!!! Yayyy! I arrived to find her where she was the night before. But before I knew it, she flew off and landed on the top of the copper building (not tippee top, but close enough)… Way to go Sydney! She flew over a short opening to the other side and preceded to explore. Her brother Niko joined her. He also checked out the surroundings, they both tested out the glass–good idea, it’s brutal and we’ve lost a few to it. Nico flew over to 225 but came back to see Sydney get fed lol. Later, Sydney took her second flight over to 240. We didn’t see where she landed, we looked but think she might have made the roof! Sally found Bluey at the back of the nest building, copying his brother from yesterday, batting trying to sit on ledge above the window like parents. He was fine. While Sally was watching him, I saw two juvies flying back to rooftop of the copper building. Out of sight but Nico popped up and was whining to mom for food. We didn’t see Sydney. I had to go, darn.

Sally reports :
Pretty quiet after you left.
Mystery brought in a large meal to 240 roof around 6pm and shortly after Quest joined him to take over
Mystery took off, I think to hunt some more.
Juvies appeared from 240 roof (Bluey) and a juvie came screaming over from the copper building, and Quest flew back to 225 roof when more food was brought in. A juvie flew after her and then quiet.
Eventually I heard juvies coming from the back of 225 and decided to move over there.
Mark and Marion had arrived and confirmed yep juvies at the back of 225 and 255 copper building roof (Nico and Bluey). Confirmed Sydney on 225.
Food brought over and prepped on a light stand at the back of the parking lot. One of the boys flew over harassing the parent before flying back to his brother.
Sydney did not fuss the entire time her brothers were being stuffed, she probably got most of the 6pm food lol
One of the juvies did a couple of flights, settling on a ledge over at 240 south west corner, the other settled on 255 roof and Sydney content on 225.
Should be an enjoyable weekend!
A good day!  Keep it up Sydney and we’re almost done!

!!! Bloor/Islington - June 10, 2021 - DART fledges!

June 11, 2021 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Marion Nash Reports:

I’ve been stopping off at Bloor/Islington for the past few days since I couldn’t see DART and TORNADO on the webcam. The two juvies tend to be under the camera where it’s a bit shadier. Yesterday, no matter how far I back I went I couldn’t see DART (blue tape). So marked the first day of fledge watch.

Doing a complete walk around the area, ledges and ground, I didn’t see anything, so I just waited. Six hours later (5:30 pm), there he was, a little blob perched on the ADP ledge. For the next three hours, I watched him exercise his wings, but that was it. Mom, D’ARCY, perched across on the Starlight building, while Dad, LUCKY, remained on the ledge with his little girl.

The most interesting part of the evening was watching D’ARCY and LUCKY encourage DART to fly. They circled around him while he was screaming at them. I don’t know when he was fed last. D’ARCY left to hunt and it was so cute watching LUCKY fly out to meet her and then they returned together while she fed TORNADO. D’ARCY took the rest of food and flew to Starlight and waited for DART to fly to her. She circled around him and tried again. That wasn’t going to happen, so D’ARCY eventually gave up and just took the food over to him and dropped it off.

She and LUCKY remained out of sight for the rest of the evening. DART finished his meal, did a flew flaps and that was it for the night. I left at 8:30.

We’ll see what Day 2 brings. Cheers, Lucie

!!! Looking for Care and Faith fledges !!!

June 11, 2021 - All Reports

Lisa Reh Reports:

Kim was at the watch first and discovered Faith (white band) on the lower rooftop opposite Queens Blvd & Pleasant Avenue at 7:20. Compassion (red) and Discovery (yellow) were on the runway while boths adults watched over them. Care was not in sight. As more watchers showed up, they started searching the rooftops and grounds for Care. The hospital has inner courtyards at the hospital, making it challenging for the volunteers.

At 11:21, Sandye reported: “Mama brought a package back to the ledge and started prepping. Looked like she was going to keep it for herself but then she dropped some on the ledge and the babies dove in. Next thing we knew she had a piece of the prey in her talons and dropped it on the entrance side of the ambulance bay. We think it landed on the rooftop there. Two babies out on the ledge and Mama and Papa on the cross”. At 12:30, Paayal located the 3rd chick on the other side of the hospital. Rudy contacted the hospital engineer to check the upper rooftops for the missing fledgling.

Tony arrived and reported at 3:40: “Faith went for a flight and ended up on the ground. Wendy, Martha, Micah and I attended quickly and Wendy wasn’t quite able to capture Faith the first time. She flew across the road, skidding on the road along the way and stopped in the middle of the one drive lane. Wendy quickly put on her teacher’s voice and stopped traffic. She had a safety vest on so it was perfect. She then captured Faith with the black towel and we put her in a carrier. She managed to free herself from the towel and seemed unhurt.” Bryton was notified and was coming for an assessment. In the meantime Faith was hydrated and seemed happy to have some water. Care was still unaccounted for.

At 4:30, Discovery and Compassion received food on the left end of the ledge. Bryton had arrived and was doing an assessment on Faith. At 4:50, Faith was given a clean bill of health and was released from the hospital rooftop. She made a great flight about 15 minutes after her release and landed on the top of the roof in front of the H.

At 5:30, Bryton came back and a nurse called him over and led him straight to Care! He was grounded in the middle area of the hospital. Care will be held overnight for some TLC and will be released tomorrow morning. Care was very happy to get some water from the spritzer! Heather reported.

At the end of the watch, David observed that Faith had taken several excellent flights! Mom and Dad were fighting over food! The 3 juveniles were on the runway, one adult on antenna while the other was off hunting.

And we have two in the air!!!

June 10, 2021 - Toronto - Don Mills

Cathy Kerr Reports:
Day 7…omg…7 days lol. Super tired so… Nico is doing great! A couple of run in with small ledges, a slip while ledge hopping, windows… which he ‘batted’ on(thank you for that Nico, love it!), a beautiful ‘j’ back up to nest ledge right beside your sister! Doing great. Bluey lazed about most of the day but finally flew beautifully to top ledge 240…don’t ask me how he got back to the nest ledge cause I thought it was Nico til I looked at my pics lol.  And our beautiful Sydney is the last one standing, so to speak. As it usually is, girls go last. After I left, lots of excitement. Thank you to Quest and family for waiting until there were lots of people to watch out for the kids lol. Another day by myself tomorrow but only one to watch, no problem!

Sally reports:
Bluey flew out from nest ledge, around and attempted to return but missed and recovered, landing on 240′roof. Not too long after, Nico flew over from 225 roof to join him…
Food brought to them
Sydney started ledge hopping east then settled for a bit.
Bluey and Nico were quite chilled out with full crops on 240 roof when that blue heron flew by
Sydney’s hyper alarm calling got their attention and Bluey flew out at the heron which barely diverted
He hit 225, and came to ground.
NICO blue tape flew from nest ledge out to 225, then attempted nest ledge return but ended on 240.
Bluey joined him from 225.
Bluey  was released on roof.
Nico did lots of flying about, trying to join Sydney on her corner ledge and almost bumped her off at one point!
Nico flew about to copper building, 240 ledges, 225 ledges.
Bluey had popped up on the roof after his release and turtle walked from south east to southwest corner then back and flew down to join Nico for the night.

!!! Care flew & was rescued, again !!!

June 10, 2021 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Lisa Reh Reports:

Care took another flight at around 6 this morning according to hospital staff and ended up at at the emergency entrance. Kim was the first to arrive at 7 finding Care, and quickly called for help. Fraser answered the call and they were able to capture Care and take him to a quiet place at Kim’s until he could be assessed. Rudy’s backup, Bryton was on the way to assess the fledgling and luckily he was not injured. Not a lot of attention was able to be given to the siblings, but at least 2 were accounted for.

Around 10 this morning, Care was released just above the nest site at the lower yellow railings. There he stayed for the rest of the watch today, occasionally wandering back and forth. A food package was brought in by one of the adults at 4:15, trying to entice him off the ledge, the adult then swooped along the runway and back to the nest site to feed the siblings. Care looked like he was going to try to get down to the others, flapping back and forth but he chickened out. Compassion was flapping up a storm for a while and then finished off the package. At the end of the day, all were accounted for while one of the adults watched over the youngsters.

Nico flys and hides for most of the day!!

June 09, 2021 - Toronto - Don Mills

Cathy Kerr Reports:
Day 6… I drove up and saw all three.  Nico on the corner of the roof still, Sydney and Bluey on the nest ledge. By the time I parked the car, got my stuff, walked around the corner… Nico was gone! I first thought he had either popped down or moved around the roof. So, I got myself settled in, checked along roof lines and decided to give him some time. I would watch the two I had in sight. Welllll, I figured he was gone after the kids were screaming at mom and he didn’t pop up. Geez… Five minutes earlier and I would have seen where he had gone. I waited. Then I took a chance and did a quick walk about. It was a brutally hot day. I was dying… Sit and watch the two lol. Noon-Carolyn came to watch the kids for a half hour so I could check out around the buildings for him but no luck(thanks Carolyn!) 1,2,3…no Nico. Watched the other two just hanging out, trying to stay cool. Not the best for flying… 4….. Bob had joined me around 2, he had done some walkabouts but it was too hot. So I was starting to think about heading out to see my dad, I asked Bob about the rooftop across from the nest… He said 6 foot retaining wall -hmmmm.. And then we heard that faint, but unmistakable, beautiful sound of a juvie begging. Other two chilling… Where was it coming from?? I decided to pack up the car and drive around… And yep, he was above me THE WHOLE DAY lol. Now he was down on the roof so how would I know? I saw dad bring a huge package to the roof and found mom at the back of the building stuffing him silly!! Yayyy… Went home happy.

Sally reports:
LOTS of fly bys by Parents who circled and did some nice flights around and around all the buildings.Sydney was hopping onto nest box and doing “mini flights” off it across the ledge about three or four times , very cute!
Sydney  got fed around 6:50pm but it was Bluey’s leftovers! So Bluey got fed at 5pm and 6:50! Quest babies him lol. Feeds him and just dropped to Syd and stood there while she ate.  Bluey  was screaming and ledge hopped to the nest ledge and knocked Quest off!
Nico left the 225 roof aiming for the copper building and bumped into the side of the upper central concrete roof, went down onto that roof, then popped up and flew back to the 225 roof !  And there they all stayed as we closed.
Tomorrow is supposed to be a cooler day so there should be more flying–Nico is doing well, he’s good!  So two to go!!  A good day

!!! Care has fledged & was rescued !!!

June 09, 2021 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Lisa Reh Reports:

At 10:30 Kim was on the watch and observed that all four juveniles were in the left hand corner of the East side of St. Mary’s Hospital. Earlier the adult was preparing food around the fifth and sixth window from the right. Food was dropped with the young at 8:45 and again about 9:45. One or two of the young made a trip across the building. Fresh food was dropped off at about 10:25.

At 3:15, Wendy was on the watch and reported that Care had fledged and flew to the ground, and landed gently and uninjured. Rudy was there for the rescue, assessed the fledgling and made arrangements to release Care from the hospital rooftop. David was also on the watch for the first flight and reported at 4:15 that after the release, Care was on the roof, (right side/north corner), one level up from the ledge, sitting quietly on the NW side close to the brick wall.

Care flew again at around 4:30 and David was on his own searching for the fledgling! Fraser arrived around 5:00 and spotted Care on a rooftop house on the corner of Pleasant Ave & Queen’s Boulevard. At 6:45, Care flew off again and landed on a narrow window ledge opposite that corner. The other 3 chicks were still on the ledge on the east side. Martha and Paul were on the watch in the evening and all chicks were accounted for. Carla and I joined up with them too and at 9:00 we left and Care was still on the window ledge, let’s hope he stays put for the night!

Kitchener chicks are ready to go!

June 08, 2021 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Lisa Reh Reports:

The fledge watch is well under way and started on June 5th. Both adults are not banded and we presume that Mystery found a new male, but there’s no way of being certain.

The chicks have a good practise runway all along the hospital windows out front on the east side underneath the cross. You can find more details on the banding on the St. Mary’s hospital site here:

Update from Beachville

June 09, 2021 - International, National and Local News

Marion Nash Reports:

Chris Martin reports from Beachville that one of his staff just located a peregrine hatchling on the roof top of one of the buildings in the middle of the plant! He also reports that he saw one of the resident adults (a banded adult) but was unable to get the band number. It is obvious that the Beachville nest site is still in fact very active and has produced this season, but sadly the resident pair did not use the nest box this year??
Unfortunately , given the advanced age of the hatchling and its mobility, and the fact that we simply can’t scramble fast enough with our current man power shortages with all of the ongoing fledge watches, we will not be able to band this hatchling this season.
But the good news,, the Beachville site is still active and productive! Time will tell as we will endeavour to identify the adults on site,,,,, stay tuned…..
