May 30, 2022 - Bowmanville - St Mary's Cement

Marion Nash Reports:

Thanks to the staff at the plant we were able to once again band the baby peregrines in short order with no difficulties.

May 30th 2022 Hot and humid today and the adults nowhere in site must be off hunting or finding a cool place to hide or bath 2 chicks banded both boys.

612 grams male band 32 over AW named Knocks with blue tape on the silver band
580 grams and a couple days younger male band 33 over AW named Socks red tape on the silver band

Another successful banding for CPF and another 2 boys added to the St. Mary’s Cement plant family.
Now it’s off to Hearn’s Ice Cream shop in St Mary’s which has become an annual tradition for us now for the best soft chocolate ice cream I have ever had and a well deserved cool down before the trip home.

CRH Cement Plant Mississauga Nest Update May 27th 2022

May 28, 2022 - Mississauga - Holcim

Marion Nash Reports:

Mark and I stopped in to check on the Mississauga Cement plant nest and saw both adults on the plant. We did not see any feeding at the nest area so we are not sure if there is a hatch but they were both positioned where they could keep a watchful eye on the nest so there might be. See photos- One adult sitting under the communication dish the other at the yellow railing below.

Banding Day Hamilton Sheraton Hotel May 27th 2022

May 27, 2022 - Hamilton - Sheraton Hotel

Marion Nash Reports:

The Hamilton Fledge watch Team and The Canadian Peregrine Foundation volunteer banding team wish to thank the staff and management of the Hamilton Sheraton Hotel once again for their warm welcome and providing their lounge on the 17 floor to band the falcon chicks.

At noon John Miller CPF volunteer did the climb down to collect the chicks and keep McKeever the adult female busy during the banding. KcKeever was produced at the Windsor Ambassador Bridge in 2019 and was given her name at banding by Marion Nash of CPF in honor of Kay McKeever of the Owl Foundation who have for many years assisted in the rehabilitation of several injured fledglings produced at many Ontario urban nest sites.. John also pulled the plant out of the nest so the camera view will be much better in the spring when looking for eggs and McKeever and her chicks will have no sticks in their way.

There were a great mix of 2 boys and 2 girls all of good weight and all healthy.

John brought his lovely twin granddaughters Celeste and Amelia to help at the banding table. One gave each chick a drink of water while it was being banded and the other assisted in putting on the colored tape on the silver band used to help the fledge watchers identify the chicks from a distance when they take their first flights. Thank you Celeste and Amelia!

Here is the banding information for each chick. Names were provided by the Hamilton Fledge Watch Team. Photos provided by CPF and Hamilton Nature.

834 grams female band number H over 70 with green tape named Wynnstay
663 grams male band number 30 over AW with blue tape named Balfour
781 grams female band number H over 71 with Yellow tape named Auchmar
612 grams male band number H over 72 with red tape named Dundurn

Fledge watch will begin soon and the Hamilton fledge watch team are looking for local volunteers.

You can see more information and video of the banding on this link http://falcons.hamiltonnature.org/?wide

4 Boys for Quest & Mystery!!!

May 26, 2022 - Toronto - Don Mills

Cathy Kerr Reports:

It’s 4 boys for Quest and Mystery!!  Great banding day today, everything went smoothly. John did his usual great job of rappelling down and scooping up the kids while Quest and Mystery kicked up a storm! But they left him alone this year,  glaring at him from across the street.  The kids were brought into the lovely electrical room to be checked out and blinged up by Mark and Eve from the Ministry.  Marion took pictures from outside (she’ll be adding her pictures to this post) and Mark (Nash) coordinated everything beautifully.  Thanks to building management and security for allowing us use their building once again and for their usual great support! Details as follows:

1st male, 695 g, C/31, red tape  , Yeager
2nd male, 655 g, C/32, blue tape, Nitro
