June 18, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton
Tracy Simpson Reports:
Marion told this story of the rescue and release.
In order to find our little missing peregrine falcon, Marion went to Neil Armstrong of Northam Realty Advisors Limited for assistance. Marion searched the roof with no success. Neil Armstrong then took her to a floor overlooking the balconies to see if the fledgling was trapped on one. Success. Neil identified the suite immediately and took Marion there.
Neil and Marion held out towels and corralled him in a corner then Marion dropped a towel over him but he scooted out of a corner and behind a planter and then dropped down about a twenty feet deep shaft. Marion asked if there was a ladder and rope available and Neil immediately called the Maintenance Department to bring the equipment. No sooner said than done. The ladder was put down the shaft and tied off for stability and Marion went down to effect the rescue. She caught him and carried him up the ladder in her arms. Once he was inside Marion gave him a thorough examination and pronounced him fit and healthy and identified him as Brisk, who fledged yesterday!
So with a clean bill of health he was placed in the carrier and left. Neil went above and beyond the call and had the air conditioning switched on so that the office was cool for him.
This evening, thanks go to Neil of Paragon Security for facilitating the release. Marion had to take Brisk out in a towel, carry him to the balcony and unwrap him. He stayed where he was released.
Canadian Peregrine Foundation is very grateful to Neil Armstrong and his wonderful maintenance staff.
It is this sort of action from Building Managers which is helping tremendously in assuring the rebuilding of a species once extirpated in Ontario.

June 18, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton
Tracy Simpson Reports:
Marion was *champing at the bit* to go on a search and rescue mission by the time I arrived.
We had a baby on the Rio-Can roof and Haven on the wall above the nest. Haven has a new hunting tactic. She flies to ledge between the black part of the black building and the concrete and chases them. When she did that today she did not pursue them.
Young Solar was up and down on his ledge today, flapping, calling and getting very excited whenever he saw one of the adults flying. Haven was her usual busy self flying here and there and checking on her youngsters. Stormin was also more in attendance today than previous days. The fledgling was doing exceptionally well.
Haven had caught a bird, not sure where but she was perched on the strip between concrete and black on the black building and feathers flying as she prepared it. I saw a Stormin head for this spot and thought hmmm their hunting techniques are similar. I went to investigate and found Stormin mere inches away from \haven as she plucked feathers then looked over her shoulder at him. Next thing I knew she had flown with the food package to the top of the black building to continue preparing it. Stormin remained where he was for the time being but the fledgling *swooped down* from RC, missed his footing whilst trying to land near Haven fluttered, recovered and flew over the top of the black building! Haven continued her job and the fledgling then flew back to Rio-Can.
It was at this point that Marion returned, with thumbs up and beaming. She had found the missing peregrine and he had a red strip on his band so he was Brisk and the fledgling flying so well was in fact Simcoe!
Haven finally finished preparing the food parcel and flew up to the Heart and Stroke building and Simcoe flew to her. Stormin landed on the north-west corner of Canada Square while Simcoe was eating. I think this was more of a morsel than a feed. Later on Haven took another food parcel to Simcoe
Both parents were very attentive to Simcoe in the afternoon with one or the other sitting in his general area.
Later on in the afternoon Solar’s entreaties were answered when Haven dropped off a large food parcel. He disappeared and indulged. Forty seven minutes later Haven fed him again!
There was another calm period of two hours and even after that there was not a lot happening. We had Simcoe wedged into a corner on the Heart and Stroke building, his back to the world. Stormin was on the top floor and Haven was watching over Solar on the nest ledge. Stormin flew away at some point and Haven flew to the Rio-Can building for the night.
It was at this point that we left and Marion released young Brisk. That rescue and release is a story in itself so please look for a separate report posted by Marion. This was a quietly exciting day!

CPF Postmaster Reports:
June 15th - 2012
Hi Mark,
Here is a little update on the situation here at Holcim. The rescued chick by Mark has been banded by MNR and released. We have named her Emmalina, and she wears Black band number S over 15.. She is extremely feisty and upon release she flew well, and gained altitude very well I thought. I am sending a couple of pics including an observation I made that showed that the parents Caspian and Storm have discovered the old nest-box that you made for Nate and his mate on the west side Silos. Perhaps they will choose the box next year.
Have a great weekend everyone.

June 18, 2012 - Toronto - Don Mills
Mark Nash Reports:
June 18th - 2012
I must apologize for the lack of updates as I have been doing a few 16 plus hours a day in the streets on the Don Mills fledge watch and by the time I’ve got home, I haven’t been able to keep my eyes open even long enough to eat.
While today was not the longest day I have spent in the streets on a fledge watch, it was close.
Shortly after 6am this morning, I found Blaze flying around 220 and 250 Duncan Mills buildings, with many good strong flights and landings to the upper elevations of each of the two buildings. While his landings are still much to be desired, he did land and for the most part without incident. Later in the morning, he visited his sister Mira who had earlier taken her third short flight over to a sixth floor ledge at 240 Duncan Mills Road.
Throughout the day, Blaze has taken some very good strong flights around the four office towers and gained altitude without any problems. At one point, he landed on the upper roof top of 220 Duncan Mills Road. He was followed quickly his mom Quest and she stuck by his side as he investigated his new world.
By the end of the day, both Blaze and Mira were flying high above the two buildings with very strong flights and were actually playing catch me if you can games with each other.
Shortly before 9am, Amora took her first flight from the nest ledge, flying south across Duncan Mills Road and landed on the top of the canopy of the rear entrance of 225 Duncan Mills Road and that is where she stayed until dark. For 12 hours she tried to get through the darkened glass of the office suites on the second floor and paced back and forth on the ledge and out onto the red canopy just several feet from the ground. Sadly, despite the fact that her parents have been feeding her two siblings throughout the day, Amora did not receive any food or attention all day.
Fearing for her safety given all of the raccoons, foxes and other less desirables and other threats that we have seen moving around after darkness over the past five days during the watch, and the fact that she lacked both the confidence and in ability to gain any altitude ,,the decision was made to rescue her off of the canopy and return her to a safer altitude on the upper roof top area.
With the support of the management group, building security and the great team of CPF fledge watch volunteers that stayed late and assisted, Amora was successfully retrieved from the 1st floor ledge without incident.
She was then examined for signs of trauma and injury and was then re-released under the cover of darkness to the upper roof top where she will be able join her two siblings and available to her parents care and be able to start again with some much needed altitude.
Stay tuned ……………..

June 18, 2012 - Toronto - King Street
Linda Woods Reports:
For the most part this evening has been quiet. No big air shows like last evening. A little frustrating as Paul and I could not get a four head count at once. But those in the air are flying well. This afternoon, I had a juvie on the south east roof area of the Cosmopolitan Hotel on Colborne St. It was there for a long time and then took off north towards the nest building. This hotel is approximately the same height as the Condo south of the nest building.
Juvies continue to perch on the King Edward Hotel chimney scaffolding, The north roof area of the # 7 Condos, and the roof of # 1 Toronto and the roof of the nest building.
Film crew for “Flashpoint” is setting up again south of the King Edward Hotel. I had a chance to speak with staff from the film set. They had a sighting late this afternoon of a juvie on the roof.
With the assistance of building security and Dave, it was confirmed that the juvenile was able to lift off this area, and was not trapped behind a glass barrier or in behind very high retaining wall barriers. Many thanks for your assistance. It is greatly appreciated.
Perhaps tomorrow, all four will be in view.

Zoe Berger Reports:
Harry and I checked Linda’s last view of Dundee from Sunday night and had no luck finding him. After Harry left around 11 to check on the Sheraton site I thought I kept hearing Dundee’s plaintiff crying. I went around to the back of the King Eddie and finally found him on a short ledge with very good height just below the top windows - pacing back and forth. It was there I saw the light green tape on his band. He was there for quite awhile vocalizing most of the time - and suddenly he flew southwest. After lots of circling of blocks by me, I ended up at Colborne and Scott and there he was - exactly where his sister had been a few days earlier. I really want to know if he knew she had been there…Spike did many circles above him but he would not move. However, he did not spend as much time there as his sister did thankfully - he flew off to the east side of the King Eddie with terrific height and disappeared heading north. I could not locate him. Linda radioed a bit after 4 and had a chick west of the condos on Scott south of King. He was too high to get a view of the tape so I do not know if it was him. However, with the terrific height and a few flights today, I think he is doing very well. My only concern is not having seen 4 chicks. I’m not sure if one of the other brothers is missing as I could not see any tapes of the brother who was flying around with his sister all day. They are really close and a joy to watch. She is still VERY vocal as she flies - it is quite hilarious. The two of them spend a lot of time together. I left around 4:15 after having a visit from Annie and Andreas who popped in on his lunch hour. Linda will post her viewings of tonight.

Dennis Patrick Reports:
Viper, Twitter, General Brock and Eddy all doing great. Eddy had a late start in her flying but now seems do be doing quite well. Freddie and Voltaire are always hanging around making sure the kids are doing fine. This weekend we have noticed that the flight school is full time in the mornings and evenings. Yesterday we couldn’t find any of them at first until they were spotted using a spot to hang out on the buildings near the University. It seems to be at a stand still in the afternoons, way too hot for them and us humans as well. Stay tuned for more pics.
