Cathy Kerr Reports:
Day 3 of fledge watch was a very wet one! It rained all morning–everyone stayed put though they all still managed to whine a lot for food!! Rain stopped around noon and Quest finally brought a packet of food for RZ!! He grabbed it from her and mantled it when she tried to take it back–he wasn’t giving it up!! She left and he spent almost the next hour working on it lol. She took another packet of food to the top of the old Harlequin building, which drove the other 3 crazy -lots of whining and flapping but they had to wait. A couple of alarm calls interrupted their lunch. Dad looked after that! Bob joined me then. Then we watched Quest have a lovely, sweet visit with RZ. She flew to the ledge beside him first and they had a little chat. Then she flew out and around to the ledge on the other side of him. Then out and around and down below him. She then went in the ledge and then kind of pranced to the edge. Then with a few more squees, she flew out and back to the roof of the nest building. And not 15 minutes later, he did the same thing! Out and to the nest building, east side, 2nd ledge down!!! Great job RZ!!! And a great job Quest-she showed him how. Then Quest took that packet into the nest ledge and the other 3 finally got their lunch!! We watched RZ explore his new ledge…he decided he didn’t like it and before you knew it, he ledge hopped! I thought maybe he would just continue around the building but he was tired and settled in for a rest. Just as well as the rain started up again-ugh. As everyone settled down again and there was no movement for over an hour, Bob and I decided to get out of the rain for a bit. As I only live 10 minutes away, I went home and came back to close the watch out. And when I came back, the 3 were still on the nest ledge but RZ was gone from the ledge! Of course! I checked around the building, but then saw Dad fly off, so followed him, watched him go around the next door building and come back. So I went behind that building and there, in the corner, still high, RZ! Guess he likes that building lol. And there I left them at dark. I won’t be there until evening tomorrow but Marion , Bob and Sally will be there to see what Day 4 will bring!!

2 chicks banded successfully thanks to the great folks at Beachville Quarry and Carmeuse and CPF’s volunteer Master bander Anne Yagi.
There was 2 female chicks this year, good thing since we have had more boys than girls so far in 2019.
We were able to get a lift up to the nest thanks to the Beachville guarry’s lift operators extracted the chicks without issue band the chicks and get them back to Mom and Dad. Both chicks were a very good weight and were quite healthy. CPF Volunteer Lucie Kirchknoph assisted at the banding table for the first time and was very happy to have had the opportunity to help the birds she has been watching for so long.
here is the band information for 2019.
Female named Grace 909 grams Canadian black band Z over 42 Blue tape on the silver band
Female named Rosie 959 grams Canadian black band Z over 43 Red tape on the silver band
Hope they do well and stay aloft.

Day 2 fledge watch! Well, not one flight by our babies!! RZ stayed put on his ledge and his siblings stayed put on the nest ledge! Matrix(green) proudly sat, lay down, flapped on top of the nest box and did a ton of wingersizing. RZ also did quite a bit of practicing…practice does make perfect right?
But we have never seen/heard so many alarm calls by the parents!! I stopped counting at 10…poor Dad especially–he answered every call. We don’t know what was upsetting them so much but we sure hope whatever it is, goes away soon. Not sure what tomorrow will bring–it is calling for thunderstorms and a lot of rain, so kinda hoping everyone stays put again lol. Many thanks to Bob, Sally & Lucie for joining me today

I stopped by last night and little RZ was on the retaining wall, looking out at a big new world!! Fledge watch began! I arrived this morning to find him still on the wall, above the nest where his brother and sisters were chilling. He hopped, ran and did a little flight along the wall to the other side and there he stayed all morning. He got fed(his siblings did not, and boy did they complain lol) by Dad and was feeling pretty good. Dad did a great job today–there were 4 alarm calls and he dealt with them all as well as hunting. It was during one of these calls that I lost sight of RZ. This happens when there is only one person on fledge watch, you look away for a second, and look back and they are gone. Now at first I thought he had jumped down on the roof, it was nap time and quite hot up there. I saw Mom fly over the roof and to the nest box, so thought all was cool. Sally joined me about then. We saw Dad fly over the roof as well. Then Bob joined us. As time went on, I had a sinking feeling..But , as I always say, watch the parents! And we followed Quest, and heard that wonderful juvie scream, I ran over and there he was–on the next building over!! He lost some height but he was up! Yayyy. Well done RZ!! And there he was when we closed the watch at nightfall. Thanks to Sally and Bob for the help….Who will join RZ in the sky tomorrow?? Stay tuned….

Well, we’ve had our first rescue!! Don Mills : RZ came to ground this morning! Think it was a slip and fall, or a bump and fall?? He ended up on the sidewalk where he was found by a construction worker (lots of construction going on there), who scooped him up and placed him by the building. Security called and, as I was only 10 minutes away, I headed over. He was scooped and in the crate before he knew what was happening! Mark met me there and after a quick check over(he was nice and fiesty!), we put him up on the roof! It has a nice retaining wall, as you can see in the picture, so he is safe. Mom and Dad will feed him there and before you know it, he’ll be up and flying!
Evening update: I went by to check on RZ this evening and that cheeky little guy was up on the retaining wall, checking out a whole new world!! Quest came in just before dark and gave him, and then his siblings, a good feed. Bob and I stayed until dark to make sure there were no more slip and falls. Fledge watch has officially begun!!
