Fledge watch Scarborough Yellow Pages Nest

July 06, 2022 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Marion Nash Reports:

We plan to start the fledge watch on Thursday July 7th. There is only 1 chick this year and it was not banded but we hope to band it if it comes down to ground and needs to be rescued. Mark did a spot check on the site and Lyn is as aggressive as ever and the chick was lying down sleeping. Lyn’s screaming woke up the chick and Mark was able to get a quick photo before she drove him off the roof. The chicks looks like it my be a male I plan to call Piper after one of the new Kitchener fledge watchers, it is also the name of a small airplane.

What a night with the Fab Four!!

July 02, 2022 - Toronto - Don Mills

Cathy Kerr Reports:
Sally reports:
We spotted what we were sure to be four juvies, fairly close together. Sally noticed crows flying over Thales and watched them for a while, noticing similar behaviour (fledglings playing and chasing parents). Well, soon one of our fab four was flying fast, towards them! A lound CAW! CAW! CAW! could be heard. After watching the fledgling fly to the crows, pull up and fly away then back again, the other three were flying over to Thales to join in! There was quite a bit of aerial acrobatics before we lost sight of them all behind Bayview Glen school and the blue glass building along Valleybrook drive. The crows never did return that day! Perhaps Quest intervened?
After not seeing anyone come back over to Duncan Mill we drove to check the back of Thales (found a parent on a ledge, looking sort of south west). We decided to check out the back of the buildings on Valleybrook and heard one of the roof. Appeared to be eating. Quest was on a roof corner next door. Soon she was harassed and flew off, and as we followed her direction we noticed a fledgling on the leafless limb of a tree. Soon he was joined by a couple of his siblings. After a while, only Yeager remained and his brothers were off over to Thales (he eventually followed). Great flights after this! Wonderful to see..
Wow. Beautiful to see. Sally took some videos (she’s younger with steadier hands lol). Then they headed back to the copper and 240 buildings… But not for long. Bedtime was on the Thales building… We had 3 there for sure but it was too dark to know. But we had all four so know they were there… What a great night!!
Pictures and videos thanks to Sally!

Food exchanges, letters, hovering…Sam’s alright!!

July 02, 2022 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Cathy Kerr Reports:

SPOT CHECK DON MILLS/AMEXON : I went over yesterday to make sure that the fireworks didn’t bother Sam . He flew in from the east, did some amazing hovering!! Then he was off… I was going to leave but saw a parent off by the condos across the DVP (highway).. Saw Sam fly out for a transfer.. Couldn’t tell if he got it.. Both disappeared then saw parent on lower roof of the condos looking down. Looked with bins, found him! He was on the outside of the glass balcony. At first couldn’t understand why he didn’t leave and then realized that he had his meal!! And wasn’t giving it up either. Stayed there and ate… Until the owner of the condo came out chased him off with a towel!!! Watched him fly off… And lost him. I stayed as long as I could but had to go….. I called Sally and we went back last evening. As we were driving up we stopped at a parking lot across from the condos and as we just got out of my car… We saw Sam chasing a parent! Yay.  We drove  over to the site and just arrived to see him chase a parent off the letter lol. Good job Sam! He tried for another transfer but I’m afraid the daycare below is going to find a yucky package on Monday!! We left him high on a ledge and headed over to see how the fab four was doing….

Tuesday spot check on the fab four!

June 28, 2022 - Toronto - Don Mills

Cathy Kerr Reports:

SPOT CHECK DON MILLS:  TUESDAY JUNE 28TH:  After watching Sam for a short while, since he wasn’t doing much, we decided to head over to check on the boys!  As we were driving past the old Thales building, we saw a juvie fly in from the east, miss a landing, turned back out and back–nailed it!!  And it was Nitro!!  We continued only a short bit when we heard more juvie cries and yep there on the other side of the building were his brothers!!  And Nitro joined them and the fab four were all together!  We watched until it was dark and the boys stayed there for the night. Sure great to see them.

Thanks Sally for the pictures!

Sam is progressing!!

June 29, 2022 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Cathy Kerr Reports:
SPOT CHECK DON MILLS/AMEXON:  Sally and I wrapped up the watch with a quick visit on Tuesday(I went in the morning…he was still on the rooftop ) and since Tuesday night was more of the same..done! He was keeping his height so all good. Sally was driving by on Wednesday so they stopped in late…here is her report:

SPOT CHECK: Wednesday June 29th, approx 8:30pm.
Don asked if I’d like to stop in and check for Sam on our way home. Didn’t have my bins or camera sadly so couldn’t identify who was parent or Sam.
One parent on the roof above the nest ledge.
One on the intel “i” letter and was sort of pancaked so wondered if the parents were settling down, and maybe Sam was on a ledge. But then a parent flew over me to the intel letters, flew by the one on the “i” and by the screaming chase that followed, I figured that had been Sam. The parent had come by with food. A fabulous chase around to the west side of Sony building, where the parent attempted a food exchange, but Sam missed it. Parent swooped down to catch and I lost sight of them briefly around the Sony building, but by this time the other parent had joined, as Sam looked like he might be getting a little ahead of himself. Then all three were above us in between the two buildings, over the Goodlife parking arcade and around Sony building, reappearing over the parking lot and then split, with one heading to the intel “t”, another out of sight, and a parent on one of the ICICI letters. Not sure who was who at the end, but thought maybe Sam was on a ledge for the night, with his bedtime snack.
So our Sam is doing great!!
Thanks Sally for the report and the pictures(from Tuesday)
