COOLER DAY, MORE FLIGHTS
Monday, June 27, 2022 - Falconwatch Coordinator Marzuk Gazi reports: For most of the morning, the chicks were seen on the roof of the BDC building, as well as Fairclough, Stelco tower and Standard Life, spending very little time on the Sheraton. An adult landed on the nest ledge at 6:54, and a chick landed on the next ledge over. Within seconds, they both took off again (photo). The chicks were seen flying impressively during the morning and afternoon, two of them often practicing their talon touching and playing tag with each other in the sky, while a third lagged behind. By 1:55, all of the chicks had been spotted, three on the north facing edge of the BDC roof and the last one still on Homewood. There were a couple of feedings, with one at 3:10 on the east side of the roof of Standard Life in which Mckeever was seen helping her chick eat and then finishing the scraps herself.

The impressive flights from the chicks did not stop. They were seen spending a long time in the air, sometimes circling above downtown, and other times chasing each other closely and continuing to practice their talon touching. A chick, thought to be Auchmar, spent most of the evening on the Northeast corner of the Standard Life building, not joining in with most of the flights. By 7:00 the chicks had all moved over to Standard Life. At 8:30, two chicks took off, and landed atop the crane being used on the construction site to the southwest of Standard Life. They then flew off to BDC. At the end of our watch for the day, all four chicks were on BDC, with a parent watching over them from the Southwest corner of the Fairclough roof

SPOT CHECK AT ERIN MILLS TOWN CENTRE - Saturday afternoon, June 25

Lucie Kirchknopf reports:

On June 10, I posted about a new nest site at a private condo in Mississauga. This is home to AINSLIE (Y/51), a 2018 hatch from Hamilton Sheraton Centre. He and his unbanded mate have two kids and I’m happy to report that both kids look great and are flying well. I managed to find them at a retirement residence just up the street .. not a surprise since both parents like to hang out there.

All good!

Cheers, Lucie

Wonderful news for HAMILTON SHERATON CENTRE!! 2018 hatch, AINSLIE (Y/51), has popped up in Mississauga and set up house at a condo with his unbanded mate .. and they have two kids!

AINSLIE, along with his brothers, was named after parks in Hamilton. Sadly, we lost GAGE and LAWRENCE. After losing mom, LILY in January, it’s heartwarming to see her legacy continue.

As the nest location is a private residence, I’m not sharing that info at this time.

Cheers, Lucie

SPOT CHECK AT BLOOR/ISLINGTON - Saturday evening, June 25

June 25, 2022 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Cathy Kerr Reports:

Lucie Kirchknopf reports:

I started watching at around 7:00 pm, and at 8:15, the activity started when a parent flew in with food. Three out of four kids went for it and as everything was happening very quickly, I’m not sure who the winner was in the food transfer .. I could see it wasn’t BULLET (red) or STARLIGHT (yellow). I’m leaning towards BIP (white) but my photos are quite grainy.

What showed the great flying skills of these kids was how white?, having difficulty getting height to the roof of the condo, was heading towards the glass/wall. Although the parent was right there, white? did an awesome swerve away from the condo and with that extra weight, I’d say that shows some good skills. I tried to capture this in my photos as best as I could.

Once things quieted down, I figured it was time to call it a night. It was about 8:45. I was parked on Eagle Road and while putting away my camera, I just happened to look up at the Bell Building (low rise, about 2 stories) and there they were .. BIP and STARLIGHT lol. So typically I would be getting ready to text someone about this just in case, but something told me to wait .. that these two were going to be just fine. STARLIGHT took off towards Bloor Street and around the corner flying very low. I turned around to see BIP and she was gone too. So I just waited.

It was after 9:00 pm .. I set my camera’s lighting and as grainy as it was, I could make out band colours! All ended well! On the condo beam were BIP and STARLIGHT! BULLET landed on the ‘p’ of the Flipp sign and soon enough BIP joined him. STARLIGHT remained on the condo beam. FREEDOM (blue) was on the nest ledge.

I left feeling quite happy!

Cheers, Lucie

Sam is staying high!!

DAY 3  FLEDGE WATCH DON MILLS /AMEXON :
Well, I arrived to find Sam back on the roof of 250 building… Again. Sally joined me shortly after and got to watch the little lump lol. And again, he sat there ALL day… Now it was a windy day so maybe he was being cautious? But his parents tried from time to time to get him off, then they spent lots of time on the Forrester building again. Mom finally took a nice package and teased him with it, even landing on the rooftop, had a little tug of war with him and then took it over to the nest building rooftop. Well that finally got him moving and he finally flew over to 150, missed landing beside mom but he got to her and grabbed the prey. Don’t know how much he got as it was quite windy up there. But he did ok. Sally had to go. Mark joined me shortly after and then I headed out to feed the pets. When I got back Sam treated us to a few lovely flights and he ended up on the top level of 250 where we left him for the night. Sally and I will finish the watch tomorrow night as he is staying high and improving with every flight. Hopefully we will see him make a letter tomorrow?? Another good day

Marion Nash Reports:

watch team have observed over the past few days and today especially, soaring and squawking Falcons over our buildings and adjoining vegetation. We think there may be training going on in how to catch one’s next meal and then competition between the young ones to grab away the catch from the other one.
Our avid photographer Maggie Pawlak was busy this afternoon and caught some great shots.
Thank you, Maggie, for your usual great shots.
Here are a few of them, along with her description as to who is who:

Marion Nash Reports:

Sorry for the late post have been out of the office. Here is a report from Winston for the Mississauga MEC Nest site.
Whatever concerns I had with Red are over. Last night I saw him make a good long flight with his brother. They chased one another and Red even stooped Blue. Considering how advanced Blue is, if Red can keep up, he’s fine. Add to that his successful and controlled landings, there is no danger that we can help him avoid now. Both boys are good to go. I would be a little concerned about one getting hit by a car. Yesterday they were diving at birds near the go cart track. I witnessed how low one came and although not low enough to get hit by a double-decker bus, it was an aborted dive.
Here are some pictures. The one on the Morguard railing looks like a potbelly giant peregrine but it is both boys together.
Mark, you like Alula pictures so I have a bad one attached of who I believe is Midnight. Renegade is the one with food.
Blue is the one with his wings tucked in, ready to be mummified by an ancient Egyptian.

Sam is doing rooftops!!

June 26, 2022 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Cathy Kerr Reports:

DAY 2 FLEDGE WATCH DON MILLS/AMEXON:  A good day! Though he made me wait to see him fly til the END of the day lol. Bruce opened the watch at 615am(!) and found Sam on the rooftop of 250! Way to go Sam! Then he saw several flights… Mom guided him from there to the top ledge of the nest building. He didn’t want to stay there and flew back to 250. When I arrived he was on the rooftop of 250, and there he stayed ALL day lol. Though to be fair, he spent about 2 hours facing a different direction each… Taking it all in I guess. Bruce left around 10am, Sally joined me around 215. We did have some excitement when an adult male peregrine decided, for some reason, to come by. Both parents were on him in a flash and drove him to hit the Goodlife sign on the parking garage, and drop, flying into the 4th floor of the parking garage and, as Sally and I found out(we checked every level to make sure he wasn’t injured there)  out the other side, out of the parents angry reach. Whew. Then the parents had a nice bonding time, food included, on the Forrester sign(where they could watch Sam from). Mark and Marion came for the evening watch, and I headed home to feed the pets! Of course Sam flew over to the rooftop of the nest building while I was gone lol. He got packages delivered by both parents! I came back in time to see him fly back to the rooftop of 250! The other flight his landing was quite poor but this one wasn’t bad. He attempted later to fly back to 150 rooftop, missed, dropped a bit, recovered and flew back, trying for the rooftop of 250, but he’d lost just a bit of altitude and landed on the 2nd ledge, well touched feet first on the glass and dropped gently onto the ledge. And there we left him at the end of the night. Cooler temps tomorrow so hoping for more flights and landings!
