!!! Toronto Sheraton Centre hotel - some weird happenings - 1 egg in the nest tray!

April 06, 2019 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Mark Nash Reports:

April 6th - 2019

Well, just when you think you have them all figured out,,, you are reminded that you don’t!

Linda called today with some weird news, in that her visit to the Toronto downtown Sheraton hotel has yielded some interesting news indeed…. as there is a single peregrine egg in the nest tray!

Yes, it’s definitely a peregrine egg given its colour and size! That said,, during her lengthy visit, at no time did she see a single peregrine - anywhere! This is not the norm at all!

What makes this quite strange is that the mechanical area where the computer and camera hardware is, it offers an incredible view of Toronto to the south, southeast, and southwest of the hotel, as the hotel towers above everything with it 44 floors (with the exception of the CN tower). Everything and every rooftop is before you,, and below you!

All of the usual roosting spots, in addition to the not so usual roosting spots were checked with great detail, as well as spending a lengthy time in front of the glass viewing window,, which usually has had the peregrines VERY upset, (and very visible) given that this glass area is at the same elevation and only feet to the right from the nest nest ledge itself!

This is one of the reasons that we have historically papered-up and covered this large glass pane so that any human activity is hidden from the peregrines view.

In any case,, no peregrines were around, anywhere!

We have our suspensions as to what may be going on,, as it may have something to do with the odd peregrines activity at the 18 King Street nest site, which is only blocks away to the east of the Toronto Sheraton centre hotel nest site………

As some of you may recall, it wasn’t really all that long ago that we had the same adult male from the 18 King Street nest site (WindWhistler - a.k.a. Spike) when he was servicing both adult females from the Toronto Sheraton centre nest while at the same time, he was servicing the 18 King Street nest site! WindWhistler sired offspring from both sites and both successfully fledged offspring that year from each nest sites!

The last known resident adult male here at the Toronto Sheraton centre hotel was named Tiago, and he was produced at the 18 King Street nest site,, and yes, his father was Windwhistler! Tiago returned to the territory as an adult and kicked his father out of the Toronto Sheraton nest site and became the new resident male.

Short history,, Windwhistler - a.k.a Spike was produced at the Bloor & Islington nest site in Etobicoke.

Thank goodness for banding and the legs bands that has helped us easily identify the birds over the years!!!

Only time will tell…..
Stay tuned……

Windsor Bridge Nest Update

- All Reports

Marilyn Weller Reports:

Our local site coordinator spoke with staff from the Ambassador Bridge and they have spotted 2 eggs in the nest. Hoping for a successful hatch this spring.

Yonge & Eglinton

April 03, 2019 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Harry Crawford Reports:

I made it up to Yonge & Eglinton around 10:30am.  Both birds were on the
south side of the RioCan building in that incredible wind.  I’m not that
familiar with these birds but the female has a definite salmon flush to her
throat and chest - a beautiful bird.

!!! Rogers Centre peregrines…… maybe nesting!!

April 04, 2019 - Toronto - Rogers Centre

Mark Nash Reports:

April 3rd - 2019
Again some very encouraging news with regards to the Rogers Centre peregrines. Recent observation reports with regards to the Rogers centre peregrines have yielded some very encouraging news indeed!

It might appear by all counts that the Rogers Centre peregrines are in fact still nesting on the centre again this season,, and down on egg(s) involved in full time incubation….. This time further north on the facilities east side, in one of the other ledges.

They are obviously trying to put some distance between themselves and the ongoing maintenance and repair work that is happening on both the south west and south east corners of the facility.

These birds are obviously very determined!!
Stay tuned for more news as we get it………

!!! The 18 King Street Toronto nest may be active again!!

April 04, 2019 - Toronto - King Street

Mark Nash Reports:

April 3rd - 2019
We may have some great news to report from the 18 King Street nest building at King and Victoria in downtown Toronto!
Once again after talking to Linda Woods, it might appear that they peregrines just might be nesting on the old 18 King Street nest building again!!

After compiling and reviewing her observation notes from the past few months, and applying them to what she is now seeing, it might appear that the peregrine activity she has been watching over the last few months just might indicate that they are nesting on the west side of the old 18 King Street nest building!

Storman,, the long standing male resident adult peregrine that was Erin’s long time mate at this site, has never left the territory, and has been active on the 18 King Street building over the past seasons despite Erin’s disappearance (and likely death due to very senior age of more than 19 years old)…..

Over the past weeks, Linda’s has been monitoring both Storman and a new “lady friend” that has been a mainstay there with him for weeks now. Most recently, Linda has been seeing only one peregrine at a time, (but seeing both throughout off and on),, and that usually spells some good news!!

As you know, at breeding time,, when you have a committed / bonded adult pair on territory, and in particular, hanging around on a potential nest site,, it usually spells good news when you just start seeing only one bird at a time,, (but still seeing both birds)…… as this usually spells eggs and incubation activities are underway!!! :-)

At breeding time, when the adult birds hormones are raging,,, mother nature tells them do find a mate!! We have long since known that the boys don’t hang around long (nor do the girls for all that matter) without the opposite sex being there!
Its breeding season don’t you know,,, and their hormones and mother nature dictates and rules!!

While the east ledges at the 18 King Street nest site are showing only minimal peregrine activity, the west side of the building has a carbon copy series of ledges,, and we already know, that Pounce-Kingsley and the Victoria (the very first peregrines to nest on the 18 King Street nest building) did go to the west site of the building one year and produced offspring on one of those ledges.

That year (for Kingsley and Victoria), there was increased human activity with ongoing rooftop repairs on the east elevations of the nest building, and as such the birds obviously felt threatened, and simply moved to the west side ledges where they were away from the human rooftop activities. Once the roof was completed,, they moved back into the original nest ledge on the east side the following year, and again produce offspring that season.

The difficulty for us now, is trying to get a good look at the west side upper elevations and these west facing ledges of the 18 King Street building, as the office buildings are so close together, its very difficult to get a look “up” from the ground level to see these upper ledges,, let alone see into them!

Storman has been constantly observed roosting on leading edge of a rooftop across the street that puts him in a direct line-of sight to the west upper ledges of the King Street building! Hmmmm…… and there is an adult female peregrine being constantly observed with him……….

We will investigate much further in the next days to follow…….
Stay tuned……

!!! Very sad news to report from the Toronto Sheraton Hotel nest site :-(

April 04, 2019 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Mark Nash Reports:

April 2nd-2019
After talking to Linda yesterday, and comparing our notes, it appears that we have both come up with the same conclusions based on our observations over the past weeks.

Sadly, it would appear that the Toronto Sheraton nest has in fact been void of any peregrine activity for some time,, (for several months now) and currently there is absolutely no evidence of any recent activity on the nest ledge :-(

My latest visit down to the Toronto Sheraton while in an effort to get the camera back on line, yielded some pretty dismal and disturbing results for any sightings of any birds themselves or any evidence of any activity on the nest ledge itself!

Very sad news indeed, as the Toronto Sheraton hotel nest has been an active producing peregrine nest site each and every year since 1997,, and is (or was up until now) one of southern Ontario’s oldest active producing peregrine nest sites!!

As for the city of Toronto,, and the Toronto Sheraton centre hotel,, the peregrines first arrived on their roof top and attempted to nest way back in 1994-1995 season!! Then they changed locations and moved to the 18 king Street location later that year,, only to return back to the Toronto Sheraton hotel on the nest ledge where they have been actively producing offspring ever since!!

We will continue to closely monitor the nest site and ledge, as you all know, things can change quite quickly in the peregrine world,, and although the nest cam is down,, we will continue our efforts to get it back up and running so we have a visual of the ledge itself on a daily basis!

Stay tuned……..

On a brighter note,,, see observation reports from the old Toronto King Street nest site at 18 King Street….. something is going on there again!!!

!!! Hand Off of the ledge

April 02, 2019 - Toronto - Mount Sinai Hospital

Linda Woods Reports:

Midday today the male came to the ledge and the female appeared from the back of the nest ledge. I think we have eggs! The female flew off and the male took up his position and disappeared into the nest ledge. A clear hand off of the nest, and a good indication the presence of eggs.

!!! Oshawa Lakeridge Hospital - 2 eggs confirmed!

April 02, 2019 - Oshawa - Lakeridge Hospital

Marion Nash Reports:

April 2nd - 2019

We have just had a confirmation that the Oshawa health care centre peregrines have two eggs in the nest box! While we haven’t been able to figure out why we can’t get the live camera image out to the internet and the CPF web site,, it is although producing an incredible live real-time colour image that is being displayed the in-house LED flat screen monitor.

!!! Kitchener CTV / Bell tower update - 4 eggs!!

April 02, 2019 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Marion Nash Reports:

April 2nd - 2019
A further update today from our friends at the Kitchener CTV studio, as they have confirmed that there is 4 eggs in the nest box!

!!! CRH Mississauga (Holcim) cement plant - the grins are very active on site and the squabbles continue!

April 01, 2019 - Mississauga - Holcim

Marion Nash Reports:

April 1st/2019

As per the norm it would seem for this Mississauga Lakeshore nest site,, we have received an update this morning from the CRH folks that their peregrines are very visible around the nest site,, with very visible squabbling and fighting going on with territorial disputes with another peregrine over claim on the territory!

You know what they say,, location, location, location,, and this seems to have been the norm at this nest site over the years with constant squabbling at this time of year between the resident pair and other peregrines wanting the territory for their own!!

Historically, this is actually the norn at most of these lake-side nest sites with many of the existing peregrines fighting each other for these prime nesting spots!

As the migrating peregrines return back to southern Ontario from their wintering-over grounds in the far south, as they fly along the migration fly-ways, the pressure is on to quickly get back on an availability territory,,,, scope it out,,,, hold and defend it,,,,, attract a mate and then once again,, HOLD and DEFEND it from all others,,,, all wanting to do the same thing… in your territory!

Given the limited number of “suitable nesting locations” here in southern Ontario on the lakeside borders,,, there is always a high demand and competition….. and you’ve got to be prepared to defend it!!
And they do,, sometimes to the death!!

Stay tuned,, let’s hope that this disruption won’t affect the courtship routines too much and a final outcome is sooner than later, so the pair (who ever they are) gets back to family matters……
