!!! Four very hungry hatchlings!!

May 21, 2015 - Etobicoke - William Osler

Mark Nash Reports:

May 21st - 2015
A quick visit to check in on the status oft the William Osler hospital peregrines this afternoon yielded some very good news indeed. I guess I couldn’t have picked a better time to drop in, as the moment that we opened the door and turned around the corner to take a look at the camera monitor, the resident adult female was right in the middle of an afternoon feeding with FOUR HATCHLINGS in full view!!
CONGRATULATIONS are certainly in order!

After carefully taking into consideration what I observed live on the flat screen monitor and looking closely at the photos (sadly although not the greatest photos), it would appear that the hatchlings are approx. 8 to 10 days old.

In consideration with this, it would appear that the optimum banding time frames will be some time between and second week of June.
Stay tuned………..

!!! Banding Day for 3 baby girls

May 20, 2015 - Mississauga - Executive Centre

Marion Nash Reports:

May 19th - 2015
Banding Day Success!
All was quite this morning when the Boys from Sky reach window washing took CPF volunteer Kathy Smith up on the swing stage to the nest to collect the chicks. Although we expected the tongue lashing from the female we did not expect her to be quite so patient. She sat on the swing stage or in the nest for most of the extraction, during the banding and while Kathy put the chicks back. Kathy was able to get a photo of her band number 98 over E black over red band so again yes it is Midnight from the downtown Brampton nest site.

It turned out that there were 3 females this year all between 830 grams and 850 grams and very healthy. they were named Adriana, Ieva and Hawkeye (named after one of the Avengers) by a young volunteer and member of CPF Max thanks Max for the great name and your help to band the babies.

Photos of banding to come soon stay tuned.

!!! Banding day - 3 males!!

May 20, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills

Marion Nash Reports:

May 20th - 2015
Banding Day Success!!

A big thank you to John Miller for his help to extract the chicks and to the great folks at Harlequin for hosting the banding again tis season. There were 3 boys this year all between 500 to 540 grams at 20 and 21 days of age. They were named Berkley, Harper and Kline, - sounds like a law firm to me but in this case LLP stands for Lovely little Peregrines.

Berkley was named after the building management company that manages the nest building, Harper the new owners of Harlequin and Kline a CPF volunteer who assisted at this years banding. Quest and Sky kept John on his toes during the extraction but no harm to John and they settled back into their routine minutes after the chicks were back in the box. The chicks should be fledging or taking their first flights very soon sometime in the next 10 to 14 days we expect.

Photos of banding to come soon stay tuned.

4 hungry mouths to feed!

May 20, 2015 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Lisa Reh Reports:

Mystery and Caster have been very busy with 4 hungry mouths to feed! Both parents are actively hunting and taking turns caring for the babies. On May 13, the breakfast feed could have been a crow judging by the large leg bone and foot draped over the balcony and the mound of black feathers in the nest! Mystery caught a seagull last year so it’s not surprising if she took out a crow, especially if it was too close to the nest. There are many coloured feathers from many feeds and a few wings that are in the nest box showing how hungry these young ones are and how hard Mystery and Caster must hunt to keep them fed. The chicks have pretty much doubled in size in a little over a week and are growing fast! One brave baby was outside in the sunshine on the balcony at about 3:30 today while his three siblings huddled just inside the box. The chicks are now very mobile and they all rushed out to the balcony to greet Mystery as she brought another feed just before 5:00. There’s lots of sibling squabbling over the food. Grackle was on the menu tonight!

!!! Etobicoke Bloor & Islington banding event confirmed - Thursday May 28th at 10am!

May 14, 2015 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

CPF Postmaster Reports:

May 14th - 2015
We are happy to announce that we have been able to secure a banding date for the young hatchlings at the Etobicoke Bloor and Islington nest site.
While still early to confirm all of the details, we can confirm that Thursday May 28th is the banding date, one that will be held in the Furthest East portion of the East Tower lobby of 3250 Bloor Street west in Etobicoke.

The plan is to meet in the east tower lobby at the Bloor & Islington centre in Etobicoke on Thursday May 28th at 9am for set-up and go over the safety procedures and protocols, with the usual meet and greet at 9:30, with banding to take place around 10:00am or shortly thereafter.

But please remember, there is allot of things involved in the extraction process and everyone safety is paramount - (including that of the birds)!!

The CBRE property managers have graciously agreed to host the banding event again this season and as usual, its open to the public and we hope to see you all there to support your peregrines!
Stay tuned for more details to come………

!!! Don Mills and Eglinton banding has been booked and confirmed for Tuesday May 26th at 3:30pm!

May 14, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

CPF Postmaster Reports:

May 14th - 2015
We are delighted to announce that we have booked and confirmed a banding day and time for the Don Mills hatchlings. Amexon Property management group has graciously agreed to host the banding in their executive board room again this year!

The plan is to meet on Tuesday May 26th at 2:30pm for set up in the board room at their sister building while we are setting up on the roof top of the nest building. - (bearing in mind that we will be coming in from the CTV studios in Kitchener Ontario as we are doing the Kitchener banding at 11am this same day, earlier on in the morning). As such we will be doing the physical banding at 3:30pm.
This site requires a more complicated set up and procedure as the hatchlings are actually on one building, and the banding is being done in the sister building. Once again, a big thank you to John Millar, as he has agreed to do the extraction (he’ll also be with us doing the extraction of the hatchlings in Kitchener from the communications tower).

Because of the limited space in the board room where the physical ban ding is being down, this banding is closed to the general public.
Stay tuned……
