Hunter and Seven appear to be involved in full time incubation activities! Fingers crossed, as this just maybe the year that Mt. Sinai Hospital has their first peregrine hachlings!

April 22, 2015 - Toronto - Mount Sinai Hospital

Mark Nash Reports:

April 20th - 2015

After being able to confirm that the resident pair are in fact Ranger - (the long standing adult male at the Mt. Sinai hospital nest site), and his new female mate - Lucky “Seven” as she was named, who was produced at the old Ontario Power Generation plant nest site on the Canadian side in Niagara Falls Ontario, it has become quite obvious that the pair are involved in full time incubation activities on the upper east elevation, in the centre (middle) ledge.

Sadly although,,, this is NOT the ledge that we installed the nest tray on several years ago for Ranger and Hunter! WE know that there is not allot (if any) suitable nesting sub-straight on these ledges,, (thus the reason for installing the nest tray years ago),,, but you just never know,, peregrine have managed to successfully incubate and hatch eggs in some really inhospitable nest ledges.

We have alerted our old friends at the Mt. Sinai hospital and arranged a site visit next week that will allow us to lower down a portable “wireless” camera down to the lower ledge from the upper roof area that we use to peek into these types of ledges where we can’t get visible sightlines from other elevations to see what’s going on.

Stay tuned for more news updates on the pair………

!!! Confusing to say the least!!!!! What on earth is going on????

April 22, 2015 - Toronto - King Street

Mark Nash Reports:

Wednesday April 22nd - 2015
I had an opportunity this morning to make the rounds to take a look at all of the web cams before running back out into the field, and once again, for over an hour, observed a peregrine was lying down on the nest ledge behind the pillar at the Toronto 18 King Street nest site - (see attached photo taken today at 11am via the nest cam).

We highly suspect that the King Street pair (confirmed to be Erin, - the long standing resident adult female and her new mate Stormin) have nested and produced eggs somewhere else either on the same building,,, (or very close by on another building),, but the observations again today has us all very confused indeed, as Erin is still vary active on the original long standing nest ledge! Clearly, there is no evidence of any eggs on this ledge, BUT,,, the one-hundred thousand dollar question remains, - what is she doing and what is going on here??

That being said, I have an appointment booked with the building management and security of 8 and 10 King Street to take a detailed look at the west side ledges of the 18 King street nest building, in addition to being able to investigate other elevations of these two buildings for any evidence of nesting activity.

Will report back to you after my visit.
Stay tuned………..

!!! News From Brampton

April 21, 2015 - Brampton - Courthouse

Marion Nash Reports:

As witnessed by Toivo earlier in the week, mating continues at the Brampton courthouse. The pair, who have claimed the courthouse as their own, are an unbanded female and a banded male 97/Y and his name is Striker. (Tracy can you insert some info on Striker, how old, hatch location.ect)

The pair can most often be found on the north ledge of the courthouse however this is often too close for comfort for another nesting pair of falcons who call the courthouse home. On the other side of the courthouse are a pair of American Kestrels; our smallest falcons. At the moment, you may be lucky enough to see the two having quite the midair battle.
Incredible speeds and stoops can be witnessed as the kestrels try to scare off the peregrines. So far this behavior has been unsuccessful on the part of the kestrels. Hopefully, we will see two active and successful falcon nests in the near future!

!!! No hatch as yet,, but sooooon!

April 20, 2015 - Mississauga - Executive Centre

Mark Nash Reports:

Monday April 20th - 2015

Just a quick check into the MEC nest site now that the internet connection has been re-established for the camera,, and the photo captured clearly shows that there has NOT been a hatch as yet as the 4 eggs remain still intact,,, but we’re all watching very closely, as a hatch is expected very sooooon!!

!!! Perhaps a change of the guard could be a good thing!

April 18, 2015 - Port Colborne - ADM Mill

Doug Garbutt Reports:

Since the territorial confrontation which occured last Saturday, we have not seen Trillium (the resident female) on site. Today I witnessed our resident male, who we call Buffalo Bill courting a juvie with a black over green band which is the same as his. We don’t know for sure but it looks like the young female falcon may have ousted Trillium the “unfit Mom” (who keeps eating her eggs). I’ll try to identify the young falcon by her band numbers if she sticks around.

April 16, 2015 - International, National and Local News

Marion Nash Reports:

It would be very nice if a peregrine pair decided to set up housekeeping on one of our downtown buildings. At present our sightings seem generally limited to brief glimpses in the outlying areas, such as this one blasting over the beach at Boundary Bay south of Vancouver

The closest I have come in the “urban” area was this one, which appeared briefly atop a large grain terminal at the east end of Vancouver harbour (.. a site normally dominated at that time by a gyrfalcon that has been showing up each winter from the north):

Cheers,

I lucked out and managed to catch Rhea Mae laying egg #4 just a few minutes ago.  Tiago was a few feet away supervising!

Canada Square; Haven Back to the Old Ledge

April 15, 2015 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Bruce Massey Reports:

I went back today to Canada Square to check on the single egg on the southwest side of the building as we weren’t convinced that this was a change in location that would last. Several years ago Haven laid three eggs on two different ledges before settling with a clutch that she later hatched out on the northwest ledge we are all familiar with. I met up with Lyn and we went upstairs with Bruce from building management and sure enough the egg on the southwest end has been abandoned and Haven is back on the old nest ledge with eggs. I left with Lyn standing watch for a changeover and hopefully confirmation on the male’s bands.

Four Eggs at William Osler

April 15, 2015 - Etobicoke - William Osler

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Thank you to Ross and Marion for the report of two eggs at William Osler. That report encouraged me to go out and visit the site today to check in and see whether further eggs had been laid.  When I pulled in I found Chessie sitting in the tower looking back at the nest ledge as if she was ready to return to the tray. I saw this as an opportunity to go upstairs and perhaps witness the changeover which would let me know where the pair is at in egg laying. I met with Ross and the two of us went upstairs to take a look at the nest tray through the monitor and the peep hole to see whether there has been any progression. We found Hurricane laying tight on the eggs and not moving. He certainly loves incubating as it is an opportunity for him to do his favorite thing which is to take a nap.  While we were watching Hurricane Ross informed me that the second egg actually arrived last Thursday and that potentially they could have a full clutch by now.  We didn’t have to wait long before Chessie came in and was demanding Hurricane give her her turn on her eggs. When the pair exchanged places, Ross was watching through the peep hole and I through the camera monitor and we were able to confirm that there are now four eggs in the nest tray.  If the second egg arrived last Thursday then potentially number three would’ve been laid on Saturday and egg number four on Monday as they lay their eggs typically every second day.  Congratulations William Osler on a full clutch and we look forward to a hatch around the second week of May.
