!!! Lots of peregrine activity at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Ranger and Hunter are very active indeed!

March 29, 2013 - Toronto - Mount Sinai Hospital

Linda Woods Reports:

March 29th - 2013
Hi All,
Today was beautiful and took this opportunity to do some observations on University Ave. I could not have had any more perfect timing than today. I arrived just in time to see the male cleaning prey on the north roof level of Sick Children’s Hospital. Lots if white fluff floating through the sunny skies and I knew this time it was not snow. I waited until the cleaning was finished to see if this was food or a gift package. Gift it was!

The male then took the prey and flew circles over University Ave until he reached the height of the east facing ledges of Mt. Sinai Hospital, and deposited on the south ledge. He then did multiple e-chups calling on his mate. She flew into the ledge from the south. Lots of exchanges of e-chupping and then the female flew off without the food package.

She flew towards the upper levels of Toronto General Hospital and out of my sight line. The male stayed on the ledge where the food package was offered. I think he was disappointed. I did a walk around to find where the female had perched and could not locate her. When I returned to the corner of University and Gerrard St. the male had flown off as well.

Chessie and Casper Working On It

March 30, 2013 - Etobicoke - William Osler

Tracy Simpson Reports:

On Friday I stopped in at the William Osler site to check in on the resident pair and their progress towards eggs.  I met up with Ross from Environmental Services at the hospital and headed up to the monitor for a quick look.  While we could see that there has been a great deal of scraping in the tray, eggs have not been laid quite yet.  It’s not for lack of trying though as the pair were witnessed mating that morning by Ross and over the past week both Bruce and I have seen the same.  It is clear that Casper is very excited about this site and the tray and is eager to see his first egg arrive…  …a little too eager.  I was watching a few days earlier when Chessie was asleep with a full crop on the eastern “H” and Casper, clearly misreading her body language, attempted to mate with her on the sign.  She turned around as he flew up and gave him a look that clearly said, “Get lost I’m sleeping” which he took to mean “Go to the nest tray and call me over and over”.  She ignored his calls and went back to sleep.  Casper was not to be discouraged so easily and did some spectacular look-at-me flights, scraped in the tray and eventually took off on a hunt to the west.  This pair is certainly working on progressing things forward and we will be watching closely for the first egg.  We are also working on getting the web camera image to the internet at this site and will definately keep you updated as to the progress of that.

North York Pair Still Present and Active

March 30, 2013 - North York - Nest

Bruce Massey Reports:

Over the past several years the pair that has been hanging around Mel Lastman Square has appeared to have made several nesting attempts that did not end up in hatchlings for them.  This year the pair are back trying and are now focussing their attention on the Invesco buidling at the northeast corner of Mel Lastman Sq.  The female spends much of her time at the top of the bell tower and the male prefers to roost on a tall building across the street.  As I watched the pair last weekend, the male flew off on a hunt and returned with a prize for his lady.  She flew up to the north side of the RBC building and perched on the sign eating away.  Both birds appear to have an interest in the Invesco building on the south face where a few ledges might be available for this year’s eggs.  Copulation is happening several times a day and so eggs will soon follow.  Last year the pair was an unbanded male and an unnamed female banded black 75 over green U from Buffalo, New York.  I will continue to try and confirm their identities and keep you updated on their progress.

Ann Brokelman Reports:

!!! !!Lady Millar Nesting in Ohio!!

March 30, 2013 - Niagara Falls

Kathy Reports:

Last night I received a request from our good friends Chad and Chris in Ohio to identify a female with black bands reading 45/X.   She has been discovered nesting at the Lakeshore Power Plant in Cleveland, Ohio and already has 1 egg in the nest box.

Quite amazing she chose Ohio as her mother, Diamond,  was born in 2009 in Canton, Ohio and has been in residence at the Niagara Falls site since 2010.   Lady Millar was one of two female hatchlings banded on July 8, 2011.

Will post most details as soon as they are available as events are still unfolding here.  The previous resident female here passed away last year and they haven’t yet reconfirmed the resident male.
