No hatch as yet - three eggs.

May 05, 2011 - Mississauga - Executive Centre

Mark Nash Reports:

May 5th - 2011
I attended MEC today to check the camera monitor and the birds progress. Just arrived at a shift chance but couldn’t get the camera out in time to snap a shot of the three eggs. Thank goodness for the camera phone and I was able to get this photo before the adult settled down on the three eggs. Interestingly, two of the eggs are a strong reddish colour - (typical of what we usually see), and the third egg is almost pure white.

As you can see, the camera is working just fine, but we’re still having problems with the computer that processes the camera image and delivers it to the CPF web site. We’re still working on it!
Hatch is very soon, Stay tuned…………

We are still planning to replace the aging camera at this site with one of the newer IP cameras as soon as money becomes available so we can get ride of the computer, as they have always been the weakest link and our biggest problem at all of the nest sites where we have cameras!!

Tiago just brought in some supper and there are definitely 4 eyases! One is clearly much younger, but quite active, though Rhea Mae had to move it back into the pile before brooding them.

Congratulations!

!!! Current Clutch Of Eggs has failed

May 05, 2011 - Toronto - Mount Sinai Hospital

Linda Woods Reports:

Recent observations, and reports from staff have indicated that the eggs the adults were incubating have “disappeared”  The unusual cold and the amount of rain may have been a factor of the failure of this clutch of eggs.

This is not usual and does happen when extreme weather conditions and poor nesting choices by the adult peregrines prove too much for a successful hatch.

Peregrines are able to produce another clutch of eggs in another area or in the same nesting scrape.

Monitoring and observations will continue in hope that this will happen. Currently, the adults remain in the area and are seen in courtship behaviour which is a positive sign that they will lay more eggs.

Updates will be provided here, so stayed tuned and if anyone has sightings please send them in.

Just finishing Dinner

May 05, 2011 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

A quick check of the Sheraton Web Cam caught this image of the young ones just finishing a meal.  I think today would be their first experience of sunshine. Beautiful day to be out watching the birds.

!!! Yellow Pages Has Four Eggs!! Linn from Rochester identified as the resident female!

May 05, 2011 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Tracy Simpson Reports:
Marion and I attended the Yellow Pages site today to follow up on how the nest at this location is progressing. At last visit, there were two eggs on the northwestern ledge that the territorial pair were attending to. Today’s check in revealed that two more eggs have been added to the nest scrape for a total of four. While attending the site, Marion and I were both carefully inspected by the residential pair and we were able to get not only pictures of the two adults, but firm identification on their band numbers as well. The resident female is Linn, hatched in 2007 in Rochester, New York and banded Black 91 over Green V.  The male is Rueben, banded Black 43 over Green M, hatched in 2003 at the Busch Agricultural Center in Wisconsin.

Linn spent a lot of time back in Nov. 07 - Jan 08 at the old CPF Scarborough Bell hack site and was unsucessful in producing eggs with Rueben in the summer of 2009. Rueben was also the resident territorial male at the Yellow pages nest site during this same time.  We will continue to check back in with this pair and follow the progress of this nest. I will also be posting pictures of the adults once I have had time to resize them so check back soon!!

Yonge and Eglinton - Canada Square Building Has Three Eggs!

May 04, 2011 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Yesterday I was at the 2200 Yonge St. nest for an inspection and as I walked up to the viewing window, there was a change over happening right in front of us.  We were able to see that clearly the pair here is incubating three eggs and at last posting on April 19th, I was only able to see two.  Given that the resident pair had three other scrapes on three separate ledges, each containing one egg that is no longer being attended, this final clutch of three is several weeks behind our other GTA nests.  I was unable, once again, to secure a band number on the resident male as he was too quick for my eyes and camera when the unbanded female arrived to relieve him.  This is the second time he’s skunked me!!  I will persist though and also keep an eye out for a hatch at this site mid to late May.  An enormous thank you to Neil Armstrong at Northern Realty Advisors Ltd. for being such wonderful supporters of this nesting pair.  I will post some of the pictures I was able to take once they have been resized so check back soon!!

!!! Sunny Skies, still incubating

May 05, 2011 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

This morning at 09:20, with the full sun on the nest ledge, the female peregrine finally got up off the eggs, stretched her wings and took off. Four eggs still intact. Moments later the male came onto the nest ledge to take his shift. The female has been seen on a routine basis flying to the south east when leaving the nest. Perhaps she is the female seen at the spit with the Hamilton juvenile ” Peter”

!!! We Got Nothing!

May 05, 2011 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

Well all I can think is that perhaps due to the unseasonably cold weather we’ve had this Spring, Angel was just keeping her eggs warm and we thought she had started heavy incubtion as she’s usually pretty efficient at hatching out her eggs at the 31 day mark and usually all  within 24 hours.

Interestingly Jack’s other site is reporting only seeing 2 eggs being incubated there - let’s hope they both hatch if that is the case.  Is Jack running out of mojo :)

It’s a gorgeous day today here for once!  Jack is out there tearing up the skies chasing TV’s again and haven’t seen Angel as of yet.  Talons crossed for a hatch here soon.

A great shot of both sexes in the same photo!

May 05, 2011 - International, National and Local News

CPF Postmaster Reports:

A big thank you to Roger From Scarborough Ontario for his photo of a female and a male Coopers hawk, one that clearly illustrates the size comparison between the two sexes.
As a rule of thumb with most birds of prey, the female is larger than the males.

!!! Birds are very much still on territory!

May 05, 2011 - Ottawa - Delta Ottawa City Centre

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Good morning everyone,

(7:20 a.m.) I was heading towards Kent/Slater Streets and in the distance I admired an aerial show from a pair of adult peregrine falcons. They both cut quite an impressive figure above the bustling city. By the time I reached the Crowne Plaza Hotel I found an adult perched facing inward on the SW corner of the rooftop.
Take care and keep smiling!
