April 21, 2009 - Port Colborne - ADM Mill
Doug Garbutt Reports:
Very early in March this year as I walked towards the mill from the parking lot I heard falcon sounds I’d never heard before. I believe the falcon making the sounds was in distress. It was still dark out & I could not see any activity but I knew the sounds were coming from the grain elevator next to ours. When it got slightly lighter outside, one worker caught glimpses of 2 falcons diving at eachother at extremely high rates of speed. I didn’t know at the time but I am assuming that this was infact a terretorial dispute as our resident tiercel (Freedom) has been displaced by a younger falcon (unnamed). We were able to ID this bird thaks to Carol Phillips from Rochester & The N.Y. State D.E.C. They confirmed that the bird was produced & banded at the Statler bldg. in Buffalo 2007. The resident female here is still “Millie” from the St. Lawrence Plant in Mississauga (also a 2007 bird). Millie has produced 4 eggs between Mar. 30 & Apr. 7 this year when full incubation commenced. Unlike Freedom who spent much of his time hunting on the west side of our facility where we could observe & photograph him, the new bird has chosen to stay on the east side of the building, making it difficult to track his actions. He has though taken part on tending to the eggs but not nearly as much as Freedom would.

April 20, 2009 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:
A quick visit to the Sheraton nest to try a capture a photo of the four eggs, and yet again no luck. The cool temperatures and the driving rain has the adults tight on the nest. The weather is expected to be warmer by the week -end and perhaps I”ll have better luck then.

April 18, 2009 - Burlington - Lift Bridge
Sue McCreadie Reports:
Could this be Pittsburgh Pete?
Bill and I were at the Lift Bridge today from 2:30 to 5:00. There were three falcons on site today. One in the nest box who came out to see what the ruckus was about. The chase was on with the other two. We are not certain if it was the juvenile that we saw on Wednesday as most of the action was over the CCIW, but my guess would be yes.
We will try again tomorrow for a clear shot of the bands.
Strange happenings in Burlington!!!

April 16, 2009 - Hamilton - Sheraton Hotel
Sarah Washington Reports:
The Hamilton Nest Site is happy to announce that they have 4 eggs this year!
With the weather being a factor in trying to see how many eggs were in the scrape, we had one day when Madame X took a nice big stretch and 4 beautiful eggs were showing!
Madame X and Surge have been identified as the nesting pair again for the 3rd year in a row, however this is Hamilton’s 15th year.
We are hoping for Mother’s Day for a first glimpse of fluff, or anytime after that.

April 16, 2009 - Ottawa - Delta Ottawa City Centre
CPF Volunteer Reports:
While up on the roof of Constitution Square Tower 1, I was able to confirm 4 large brown eggs in the nest scrape across the street on the Crowne Plaza Hotel, southeast corner of the ledge. Hatching is expected around the 5th of May and the Falcon Watch to start around the middle of June.

April 15, 2009 - Burlington - Lift Bridge
Sue McCreadie Reports:
Bill and I were at the Lift Bridge this afternoon between 2:00 and 3:00 and witnessed the most unbelievable aerial display. The first clue that something was up was lots of ee-chupping. The next thing we knew, a bird came flying out of the nest box and the chasing and diving and screaming at one another began. We never actually saw a strike, but it was pretty intense. It went on for at least 40 minutes. We thought that it was definitely a male and female as there was a great size difference. When we got home and downloaded the photos, this is what we found:
1. The large bird appears to be a juvenile with black over green bands
2. The smaller bird was an adult with a black bland on the right leg and a silver band on the left leg
Unfortunately, we were unable to read any band numbers, but we will try again tomorrow.
When the chase was over, the adult bird returned to the nest box, disappeared inside, and the other bird disappeared somewhere behind the Burlington Tower
Very interesting happenings. It is possible we have a 2008 Juvenile trying to take over with the adults trying to chase it away or do we have a Juvenile that has taken over the territory from ‘Our Mom’? Hmmmm!
