July 21, 2013 - Etobicoke - William Osler
Tracy Simpson Reports:
With the William Osler name the chick contest now officially closed we thank all of you that participated in voting for the names that the birds will now currently enjoy. The names of the birds and the tape colors that they are associated with are as follows. The first fledge, little blue tape, is officially named Maverick. Our second fledge, who became affectionately nicknamed Roxy red, is now most fittingly named Aura. Our second female who was flying like a trooper on her second flight with white tape is now named Blizzard. And finally our little male with yellow tape, who enjoyed napping in the residential area eavestroughs on his first flight, shall be known as Apollo 3. Congratulations all of the folks that participated in the contest and especially to the family at William Osler. Thank you so much one and all for participating in such a wonderful and important contest. As I continue to catch up and update you on posts I will now refer to all of the fledglings by their official names.

July 21, 2013 - Toronto - Don Mills
Tracy Simpson Reports:
After Friday’s storms rolled through, we went out to all of the nest sites in our areas to check on the adults and juveniles doing a quick headcount. On Saturday, a gentleman living in the Victoria Park and Ellesmere area found an injured Peregrine on the ground and called Toronto Wildlife Center. The injured Peregrine was an adult and was banded. After the bird had been delivered to care, the gentleman called our office to let us know of his rescue . We also received contact from TWC regarding the bird and his band number which was solid black recovery band 33 over Y. This bird was positively identified as Kendal, resident male from 240 Duncan Mill Rd., and he was now being examined for his injuries. It is believed that during the period of high winds as the front moved through that Kendal was in the air, lost control and struck a building. X-rays have indicated that he has a fractured clavicle and a fractured coracoid and is now being closely monitored. Bruce stopped by the Duncan Mill road nest site to check in on the rest of the family and found Quest over on the Westin building. The two girls were not in his view but will certainly be coming home for the supper hour looking for food. Our thoughts are certainly with Kendal in the hopes for his speedy recovery and we will keep you updated on his condition.

A big thank you to Kathy Rogers-Hartley and son Kiernan for sending in their observation report during their stay at the Westin Hotel this past weekend, (after the Friday storm)!
Kathy reports:
This past weekend we were at the Westin Hotel at 900 Don Mills and there was raptors using the roof to leave the 2 juvenile birds while the parents went off for food. The juveniles were fledged and would fly around noisily demanding food when the parents came back.
When we arrived at 10am on Saturday all three birds were in the air and there was plenty of noise! As we left at 3pm on Saturday, the same thing was happening. I managed to only get this photo. Quest must have left to go hunting after that. The kids were running around the roof and I could see their heads with the camera (one at the right corner and the other under the ‘w’), but after waiting for about 15 min, she did not return and I gave up waiting for another photo.
So happy to be able to give you an update!!

July 19th - 2013
Just a little update for the end of a very hot week. Didn’t see much of them at all this week until this morning to what it looked like to be Carina and Luna flying around from the nest building to the Harlequin’s rooftop screaming at one another. No Mom and Dad. One of the juvies landed on the ledge of the nest building and when I went over to have a look she was playing with a tree branch until the other one was swooping down at her like kids trying to taking the toy away. I thought this was odd so I took a picture with my IPhone I have attached the pictures so you can see.
I hope the weather cools down soon for all of us, have a good weekend.

July 11, 2013 - Niagara Falls
CPF Postmaster Reports:
July 11th - 2013
A huge thank you to Jacques for sending in some of his photos of the peregrines from his visit to Niagara falls last week. While we can’t identify any of the fledglings via a band identification as the Niagara Parks commission would not allow access this year to band the young hatchlings and check their health, it would appear that at least three of the four hatchlings are still going strong and very visible. Despite the fact that they are now flighted, they are still very much dependant on their adult parents for both food and protection, (in addition to many life skills that their parents need to teach them) until they are able to actually catch their own food.
Jacques writes:
Hi CPF
I photographed 4 peregrines on the old OPG powerhouse roof on July 11; I think they are all juveniles, but not 100% sure. One adult was perched on a dead branch on the rock wall below the walkway facing these 4. I could therefore see 5 peregrines at one time from one location.
I have also attached several close-up photos of the adult and juvenile also taken on July 11th. Best regards.

July 18, 2013 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton
Marion Nash Reports:
Short and sweet today. It was too warm and muggy to stay out for long.
Ramjet, Tinia and Imagine have a new “playground”. They were having a great deal of fun playing around the top of the apartment building at 500 Duplex Ave. They love the antennae on top of the building and that is where they practised their “touch and go” and kiting activities.
In addition to those two activities they also honed up on talon touching, catch-me-if-you-can, round and round the building, speed-flying and best of all “peregrine in the middle” in which poor Ramjet was dived on from two sides by his sisters and had to present talons to both of them. That was a funny manoeuvre!
I was amazed to see how much bigger Imagine is when compared with the other two. She has very large wings!

July 19, 2013 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre
Kathy Reports:
For the past 10 days it’s been relatively quiet here at Etobicoke Sunlife. I’m only seeing and hearing 2 juveniles and one of those is Frank as I’ve spotted him on cam several times lounging in the nest box in this extreme heat. The other I’m not sure of however she is still experiencing some challenges with height and has to frequently circle around to gain enough height to land on the ledges and buildings. No sign of O’Connor anywhere and I have seen Jack several times including the other day when he spent a few hours on the nestbox ledge.
I have noticed O’Connor likes to fly south so perhaps she and the kids have been hanging out elsewhere down near the lakshore to stay cool! Hopefully with a cool down coming we may see more of them in the coming days before they head out of the area!

July 17, 2013 - Port Colborne - ADM Mill
Doug Garbutt Reports:
Yesterday (July 16th) our young falcon was banded. This comes about 10 days after it was transferred from the precarious beam it was on to the safety of the nest box. All went well as Anne Yagi, Mark Nash, Rolf Numsen, Nick and myself made our trek up the neverending stairwell to the 12th floor where the nest box is located. I think we all must have shed a few pounds with the heat & humidity! After closing the drop down door at the front of the box, the rear door was opened to extract the juvenile for banding. As usual, Anne came well equipped & had everything ready for the procedure as the young one arrived at the table. She determined without doubt that we have a healthy female approximately 23 days old weighing in at 878 gms with an empty crop. The young one was then equipped with a solid black band S over 32 and red tape covering her USFW band. I took the liberty of naming her Eve. According to both Anne & Mark, this is the latest known banding in this region ever. Many thanks to the expertise of both of them for the safe handling of this young falcon & giving it a shot at survival. As usual, we are nervous about the whole fledge thing but will do the best we can to help Eve succeed.

July 17, 2013 - Toronto - King Street
Linda Woods Reports:
Even in this searing heat of the downtown, this afternoon around 4p.m. both adults and at least one juvenile were seen flying high over the King St nest area. I was drawn to look up when I heard the distinctive call of a juvenile. I looked up and there was one of the young females screaming after one of the adults. Too hot to be flying, but I guess it’s cooler when there is a breeze under your wings.

July 15, 2013 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton
Marion Nash Reports:
Saw all five peregrines this evening. Haven, Stormin and one juvenile female were really high east of Yonge and Eglinton intersection, at the same that I saw Ramjet and the other juvenile female talon-touching just above Rio-Can. The three high peregrines were also talon-touching.
Just a wee while later one of the juveniles was fed and the other two descended on the same spot but without luck.
One of the juveniles became annoyed at having to sit and watch the other one eat and so it took off and chased a pigeon over the bus bay and across the Yonge and Eglinton intersection east towards the Bell Canada building. Sad to say the pigeon was faster than the peregrine, who gave up the chase.
