!!! Lucky and O’Connor - a new thing happening!! Looks quite serious indeed!!! :-)

March 16, 2015 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Monday March 16th - 2015
A big thank you to Olga for sending in her snap shot of Lucky and O’Connor taken this afternoon via the live nest web cam from the Bloor & Islington nest site where “Lucky” may just get lucky :-) :-)

It would appear that the previous resident adult male “Jack” has been replaced with a the new kid on the block,, a young peregrine named “Lucky - banded Black Y over 72″ who was produced at the Don Mills & Eglinton nest site in 2013 - http://www.peregrine-foundation.ca/w/c/sightings/toronto-don-mills-and-eglinton

We knew that some day, Jack’s absence would cost him this nest site, (and although Jacks whereabouts is actually not known), proof is in the photograph. Lucky is currently courting O’Connor, and it would appear that she has been very welcoming indeed!
Stay tuned…………..

!!! Mixed news update from MEC. Live cam is working, but no signal to the CPF web site?? Also, no eggs as yet!

March 13, 2015 - Mississauga - Executive Centre

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Friday March 13th - 2015
A quickly update on the MEC nest site and happenings. Sadly, we have not been able to get the live MEC nest camera issue fixed :-(
Despite all of Tracy’s efforts (with allot of help from the MEC engineering staff), we have not as yet been successful in fixing the live web cam problems.

That being said, the colour nest box camera is in fact working just fine and has been throughout (at least in-part), as it is still producing a live real-time colour streaming image to the TV monitor inside the building. Throughout the afternoon while Tracy was on site, she watched the resident grins come in and out of the nest box. No eggs as yet.
We have again contacted the CPF webmaster to see if there is something that he can do for us to fix the problem
Stay tuned…………

!!! New Male on Site - Positively ID’d as Lucky!

March 16, 2015 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

This morning I noticed the male had a dark band on his left leg and some other distinguishing features that were not attributed to our resident male Jack.

Tracy was kind enough to come down to the site and has just positively ID’d our new male as Lucky - who was previously seen romancing Quest until the Don Mills resident male Skye returned from migration last week.  Lucky was born at the Don Mills & Eglington Amexon nest site, he is banded Black on the left leg and has blue tape on his right leg covering the USFW band.

We are attempting to determine if Jack is at his other site and will return or if this is settled.  O’Connor and he have been bowing to each other so she is certainly welcoming him which may indicate a territorial battle over the weekend.

!!! Confirmation Photos from Ambassador Bridge Site

March 14, 2015 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Marilyn Weller Reports:

Thanks again to Paul G. for more great shots today at the bridge. Voltaire’s bands can be seen quite well in some of these photos and the male is clearly not Freddie. We will continue to look through photos from the past couple years to try and narrow down when Freddie was last seen at this nest.

!!! Discovery of Change in Resident Male in Windsor

March 14, 2015 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Marilyn Weller Reports:

Through the sharp eyes of our friends at the CPF, it was observed that the male in the recent photos from the past week is not banded. Looking back, it appears that this new male was resident at least beginning in the Spring of 2015. We have confirmed band numbers on Voltaire so she remains the resident female here. Guess we were all too busy counting fledglings last year to notice the change.

Thanks to Marion, Mark, and Tracy for you help in noticing this significant change!

!!! Territorial activity observed at Hearn!!

March 13, 2015 - Toronto - Hearn Power Station

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Friday March 13th - 2015
I had an opportunity to get down to the old OPG Hearn plant on Unwin Ave this evening on my way home to check on the status of the resident Hearn peregrines, and was delighted to see at one of resident peregrine falcons on site, overlooking its domain. Actually, the adult colored peregrine was perched high up on the smoke stack, roosting on the top of the west facing white strobe light , 3/4 the way up the smoke stack.

I watched the peregrine roosting on the strobe light for approx.40 minutes after my arrival, and then watched it make an incredible dive and stoop on a large black coloured bird close to the base of the smoke stack. The peregrine dove and stooped down so fast that I couldn’t even follow it with my bare eyes, and it was only after the explosion of feathers when it hit the smaller bird, did I realize that it had come that close to the base of the smoke stack and the ground level!!. Moments later, it re-appeared back in my view against the lighter blue sky with a kill in its clutches and I watched the peregrine utilize the air movements to gain altitude as it snaked back and forth around the west side of the smoke stack finally ascending to the highest upper most white blinking strobe light (almost at the very top of the large smoke stack on the south side), where it finally landed and eventually chowed down to eat its prize!

What an incredible display of determined, focused talent!!

I finally departed at dusk when the light simply disappeared making it too difficult to see much of anything. As a foot note, I have long since forgotten just how dark it gets down there, given the lack of street lights and other ambient light that would normally come from other hi-rise buildings.

Sadly, I didn’t have my camera this go-round, but I promise that I won’t forget it next time!!!
Stay tuned,,,,,,

!!! Mating observed twice today!

March 12, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills

CPF Volunteer Reports:

March 12th - 2015
Just dropping a line to let you know that Quest and Skye are very romantic today (mating observed twice today). The chipchipchip sounds alert me when they are nearby. They have been very vocal this week especially around 5:30pm, when it looks like Quest is getting room service at dinner time :)

Both spending time in the nest box as well. From my binocs it looks like house cleaning being done.

I read Cathy’s news that Skye is back (after observations on the CPF website reported a younger male hanging around in the winter) ? Nice to see Skye back!

!!! Ossie confirmed at Hamilton, Sheraton!

March 12, 2015 - Hamilton - Sheraton Hotel

Kathy Reports:

Thanks to Charles Gregory from Hamilton Falconwatch who provided us with this very clear photo of Ossie’s black band, Tracy from the CPF was able to confirm it is indeed Ossie.  He was hatched in 2012 at our William Osler Etobicoke site and banded O / 8 by Mark Heaton of the MNR, using a rare three character band.

Increased nest ledge activity with both peregrines in view!

March 09, 2015 - Toronto - King Street

CPF Postmaster Reports:

March 9th - 2015
Some additional shots from Olga that captured both resident adults on the nest ledge again!

!!! Soaking up the sun! Its March break do’t you know!

March 12, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills

CPF Postmaster Reports:

March 11th - 2015
A quick snap-shot sent into us from the Duncan Mill nest site showing Quest having a lazzzy moment soaking up the sun in her nest box today.
Hmmmm, enjoying March break?

It won’t be long before some serious family rearing business begins, (egg production, a long incubation period), and Oh goodness, kids to raise and look after!!
