April 10, 2015 - Toronto - King Street
Marion Nash Reports:
April 10th - 2015
A quick check in at 12 noon today at the Toronto King Street nest site and I found Erin again laying down behind the pillar on the nest ledge. Again, there is no indication of any copulation activity observed and sadly, there was no eggs present.
This situation is not looking very good.
For reference, the Toronto 18 King Street nest site has for the most parts been occupied by peregrines since 1995, and has for the most parts of the last 20 years, produced offspring each and every year since 1995! The Toronto 18 King street nest was Toronto’s first established, producing peregrine nest site in Toronto’s history!!

April 08, 2015 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge
Marilyn Weller Reports:
This evening, volunteers at the Bridge reported seeing a 3rd adult Peregrine flying near the nest site. Voltaire and her new mate were both seen chasing after this 3rd Peregrine. We have not been able to determine if this adult is banded or not but will keep watching to try an spot a band if possible.

April 08, 2015 - Stoney Creek
Tracy Simpson Reports:
I stopped in at the Quarry in Stoney Creek today to check in on Athena and Craig in the hopes of finding the pair at home. The winds were quite strong and the road quite busy so I was unable to get a scope view of the nest cavity but I did manage a view. It would appear that there is something in the nest cavity but given the distance I was unable to confirm whether this was a peregrine or not. The territory itself was very quiet with no peregrines in sight but the quarry is large and the camouflage great so finding them is very challenging. Of interest was a local pair of Red tailed hawks that were hunting without being challenged or raising an alarm. I will be back for a better view of the nest cavity to confirm whether this pair is active there this year.

April 08, 2015 - Etobicoke - William Osler
Tracy Simpson Reports:
Ossie, hatched at William Osler in 2012 and now the resident male at the Hamilton Sheraton Hotel, has just seen the arrival of his first egg with his mate Lily. It wasn’t that long ago that Ossie and his sister Tobi were flapping up a storm in Etobicoke learning the fine art of flight from their father Hurricane, playing tag and napping the day away. Now Ossie is a resident territorial adult in Ontario with young ones on the way. My how they grow up fast! Congratulations to Ossie and Lily on their first egg!!

April 07, 2015 - Mississauga - Holcim
Tracy Simpson Reports:
After hearing of the recovery of the resident adult male Storm yesterday I was intent on visiting the Holcim site today to check in on Caspian and how she is doing. The last time I was out there the adults were getting ready to put down the first eggs of the season and I was sure that they would have their first by Monday March 3oth at the latest.
Today when I arrived there wasn’t a bird in view so I set up on Avonhead Road and waited for an appearance by, well, anyone. After 20 minutes of nothing I decided to head over to the roadway that parallels the west side of the plant and found a bird on the south silos. It took off and headed for the nest ledge so I headed back and found a male sitting on the east side of the nest ledge looking in. I had no doubt he was looking at the female laying on eggs. After about 10 minutes of this he reacted to movement on the ledge by bowing and taking up a defensive posture. It was mere seconds and the female jumped up and was on the attack. She chased the male off of the ledge and through the plant for a few minutes and was right back into the ledge and down. He persisted and she went at him again driving him out. Moments later she was back on the nest ledge and on her eggs. The male finally gave up landing there with her and decided to patrol the plant for about 15 minutes. He then landed on the short silos along Avonhead Road and I was able to get the scope on him. The first thing I noticed is that this bird is in juvenile plumage; last year’s hatch. The second outstanding feature was the yellow tape over the USFW on the right leg. Finally, I was able to clearly see a solid black recovery band on his left. I was unable to read the band due to wind shake and distance and will have to come back for another try. There are a few males that were banded last year in southern Ontario that were given yellow tape, the most notable being Trout from the Toronto Sheraton Hotel nest site who has been seen overwintering in Florida. Could it be that Trout has come home to Ontario? I will have to go back and confirm the band number before I can say for sure who it is. What I can say is that Caspian, the resident female, wants nothing to do with him at this time and this new male will have his work cut out for him if he hopes to participate in this nesting season with her. Should he stay with her and the eggs hatch, he will be helping to raise the final brood from Storm as eggs were laid well before this young male took over.

First Egg!
Another late night but got home just in time,, (well seconds late actually),, as RM laid her first egg under the cover of darkness! (Well, not quite under the cover of total darkness given the infrared nest camera)
You gotta love the technology - when it works!

Been watching RM at the Toronto Sheraton Hotel on my smart phone on and off all day waiting to catch RM laying her first egg,, but the few minutes it took me to get from the underground parking to my computer and I missed it,,,, by seconds!!!!!!
A few minutes later, after the egg finally hardened, RM finally laid down to cover the egg. She looked absolutely exhausted and immediately closed her eyes and fell asleep.
Stay tuned……….
