!!! Quest may have just produced her first egg today!

April 01, 2013 - Toronto - Don Mills

CPF Postmaster Reports:

April 1st - 2013
While we have not been able to confirm the presence of her first egg, it appears that Quest is doing something more than just keeping the gravel warm!

Given the blustery cold winds and wind chills, all of the resident female adults on the nest ledges are covering their egg(s).

The high winds and the various snow streamers coming from the north and north west off the Georgian Bay are actually hammering communities to the north of us with accumulations of snow and bitter cold winds. The wind chill factors associated with the high winds has all of the resident adult females laying down tight to their nest bowls and not giving us an opportunity to view their secrets.

The latest photo of Quest shows her lying down tight over her nest bowl and we don’t blame her! Its COLD!!! What on earth has happened to the great spring weather and warm temps that we just had over the previous two days?? This week we are to expect unseasonably cold temperatures and we may even get some minor snow accumulation!
Stay tuned……..

Quest and Kendal Working on Eggs

March 30, 2013 - Toronto - Don Mills

Ann Brokelman Reports:

During the past week the activity at Duncan Mill Road between Quest and Kendal has been all about nesting.  Lots of mating, vocalizing, food gifts and flight demonstrations.  No eggs as of yet but here are a few of my favorite moments from the past week.

Quest and Kendal Working it Out

March 09, 2013 - Toronto - Don Mills

Bruce Massey Reports:

Yesterday I was joined by Tracy Simpson at the 220 Duncan Mill Road nest site as Quest and Kendal were both on site and their behaviour was a little odd.  In the morning when I first arrived, Kendal was shadowing Quest wherever she went and was almost harassing her.  By the afternoon when Tracy arrived, the tables had turned and it was Quest that was now instigating the chases.  While the activity was all on friendly terms, it was clear that Kendal had pushed his luck with Quest and she was now annoyed with him.  Twice he flew in to mate with her as she sat on the Harlequin building calling him and twice he seemed to abort at the last minute.  Finally she’d had enough of his half hearted attempts and chased him off of every perch he landed on.  It was clear that she wanted him to focus and he was more interested in attending to the nest bowl than her.  She set him straight by the late afternoon and the pair settled in at the nest site.  All photos courtesy of Tracy Simpson.

Quest and Kendal Give a Kestrel a Lesson in Territory

March 09, 2013 - Toronto - Don Mills

Bruce Massey Reports:

When I arrived Quest was on the south side of the Harlequin building and Kendal was on the top of 240 Duncan Mill Road sunning themselves.  All of a sudden Kendal began to alarm call and a large bird flew through to the north that looked like a heron.  Neither bird moved as the bird flew to the north and disappeared.  A minute later both adults began to alarm call and a brave little American kestrel took a run at Quest!!  Kendal took off towards his mate as this was all happening and then Quest was also in the air.  Both adults took off after the kestrel and there was an aerial exchange of swoops and words with the wee interloper.  The kestrel took off to the west and both adults returned to their roosts.  A few minutes later, Kendal flew over and was about to breed with Quest but veered off at the last minute.  Spring is in the air for sure and nesting is very much on their mind.  Kendal returned to his perch and remained for only a few minutes before the pair took off in a courtship flight together.  Excellent to see the pair renewing their bonds!!

!!! Both Quest and Kendal observed back in the nest box this morning!

February 15, 2013 - Toronto - Don Mills

CPF Postmaster Reports:

February 15th 2013 Good news was received this morning from Donna in that both Quest and Kendal were observed back in the nest box again this morning. While a short visit, it appears that the love birds are still very much around and hanging close to the nest box. While the weather continues to be colder and there is plenty of snow events predicted in the long range forecast, there appears to be an abundance of renewed activity that is being observed at most of our southern Ontario urban nest sites. Toronto, Scarborough, Don Mills, Etobicoke, Mississauga, North York, Burlington and Brampton are all reporting seeing their peregrines active on either the area buildings and/or on nest ledges themselves. Stay tuned……..

!!! Nest box roof inspection, peregrine style!

December 04, 2012 - Toronto - Don Mills

CPF Postmaster Reports:

December 4th-2012

While most of the other nest sites have been void of recent peregrine activity, at least Quest was on site today at the nest having been caught on the web cam. Late this afternoon, she was observed doing a couple of fly-by’s and finally ended up landing on the roof of her nest box. The unusually high temps today were record breaking here in Ontario with it almost reaching 60 degrees F (17 degrees C)!

In contrast, we are being told that we are to expect freezing temps tomorrow (Dec. 5th) with blustery north-west winds with wind chills of minus -5.

No snow as yet, (at least here in Toronto proper), but winter is just around the corner!

!!! Quest is back at her nest box!

November 29, 2012 - Toronto - Don Mills

CPF Postmaster Reports:

November 29th - 2012
We received some good news this morning that came with some updated web cam snapshots of Quest back at the nest ledge in her nest box reviewing the situation. While her visit was short, we can confirm that she is both aware of its return and that she has in fact visited the nest box.

We can expect to see her doing the usual house cleaning (re-organizing) of the pea-gravel inside of the nest box over the next few days!
Stay tuned………..

!!! Home is where the heart is! But the nest box helps allot!!

November 21, 2012 - Toronto - Don Mills

CPF Postmaster Reports:

November 21st - 2012

Despite the fact that Quest and Kendal have been not very visible these days (although pretty typical of most all of our urban resident territorial adult peregrines throughout the winter months), they have been very much around watching the happenings and all of the ongoing work around the 220 Duncan Mill nest building. Yesterday, (November 20th) we received a flurry of calls from watchers reporting that both Quest and Kendal were very visible around the three Duncan Mill buildings involved in several “fly-byes” of the nest ledge obviously pretty excited about the return of their nest box.

While they kept their distance and didn’t actually land on the 220 Duncan Mill nest building, they were more than interested in the fact that the nest box was back on ledge!

Stay tuned, as we should start seeing them more often in the next few weeks, and hopefully we’ll catch some camera views of them back in the nest box in the evenings after the workmen have left the work site for the day. I’m sure that Quest will have some house-cleaning and straightening-up to do once she gets back in the nest box :-)
