Tornado is a force to be reckoned with!!

July 29, 2022 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Cathy Kerr Reports:

So exciting news!! Tornado, hatched at the Bloor and Islington site last year, banded 02/AB has been spotted again!! In Buffalo! She is the daughter of Lucky and D’Arcy, Granddaughter of the late Jenna and Chester, Great granddaughter of Haven!! Huge thanks to Dana for spotting the report in ebirds and letting us know! And great pics and report from Christopher Hollister who got to witness an amazing hunt by Tornado who took down a green heron!! She’s a fierce one that Tornado, as Rob can attest to as he had to rescue her last year lol… I believe he said she was one of the meanest Pf he had ever rescued… And that’s how we like them because it means they are a fighter and a survivor! And boy is she ever!!! Way to go girl!

I’ve included the story with the pics.

Assisting the Bee keepers at Yellow Pages Scarborough Nest

July 22, 2022 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Marion Nash Reports:

On Friday July 22nd Mark went out to help the bee keepers by watching out for and protecting them from Linn and her wrath while they tended the bee boxes on the 12th floor. Linn did make er presents known and gave her usual verbal and stoop warning but was far less aggressive now that Piper is flighted. She flew off to the north side of the building and left them alone while they worked. Not long after George flew in with food and Piper joined him in the sky yelling to be fed. Mark got to see a mid air transfer of the food package from George to Piper and saw the 2 fly around to the North side of the building. When the work was done and they were back on the ground Mark looked for the peregrines but no one was in site. I was so hot and he expected they were all hunkered down on the ledges someplace in the shade.

Sad news received.

July 22, 2022 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Marion Nash Reports:

Bullet a fledgling from the Bloor Islington Place nest was found dead at Bloor and Montgomery must have hit a window or wall. The report was sent to the banding office on July 10th I got the report on the 19th. Although this is very sad I can at least take comfort in the fact that mortality has been low this year so far with only 1 other loss at St Mary’s Ontario. Hitting windows, concrete walls or wires is beyond our ability to prevent as these youngsters learn to be feathered F-16’s. It is up to the adults to guide them away from danger by bumping them in flight, pushing up on one wing to steer them or pushing down on their tail to break the speed. I have seen this so often but there are times when the adults don’t see it coming. It is all part of the high mortality rate ( 80%) the youngsters have in their first year of life. We can lower that mortality rate to a degree during the fledge period which is about 60% of that mortality. Thank you to all who spent time in the streets looking after the fledglings there and lets hope the other 3 make it to migration and beyond.

Last check for the night–only one home

July 15, 2022 - Toronto - Don Mills

Cathy Kerr Reports:

SPOT CHECK DON MILLS : Sally and I made a last spot check on Friday night to see if we could catch the fab four. Unfortunately, we only saw one. Ace or Nitro… Next year white tape instead of green lol. A parent flew by to check on him quickly but otherwise it was quiet. He popped up to say hi, flew south then looped around and off to Thales. And there we left him for the night. Has Quest taken them off site now? Time will tell

Sam hangs with the locals!

July 15, 2022 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Cathy Kerr Reports:

SPOT CHECK DON MILLS /AMEXON :  Our next stop was to check in on Sam! Now I have been seeing him quite regularly since I work close by. So some pictures are from last week and the last one is from last night. Last week I found him across the street playing with the locals lol… They were not impressed. Last night at first we just saw the parents. We finally decided to leave when up he popped on the rooftop. Good to see him doing so well.

Piper flying well!!

July 15, 2022 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Cathy Kerr Reports:

SPOT CHECK YELLOW PAGES:  Sally and I decided to do a spot check night last night! First up, Piper!! She’s looking great! She treated us to lots of great flights around the building.. She was hungry!! Mom Linn was above her at first, then did some lovely flights herself, teaching Piper the way! Then she dropped in with a package which Piper promptly grabbed and mantled. Linn left her to it. Dad George came in and hung out on the west side. Linn finally went down and grabbed a bite for herself lol. All good here.

2 chicks at Windsor Ambassador Bridge

July 16, 2022 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Marion Nash Reports:

Windsor Ambassador Bridge has 2 chicks. The adults did not nest on the same ledge this year they nested on a steel beam only a foot wide and 10 feet long. The new nest was not discovered early enough to plan a banding and the chicks are too old not to attempt an extraction safely so we are hoping we can get them banded if they come to ground and are rescued during fledge. you can read more and see more photos on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/138170609654580

Spot check Scarborough Yellow Pages

July 15, 2022 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Marion Nash Reports:

Bruce checked on Piper last night and saw her make a couple flights including a short glide. She tried to go down to a lower ledge with Linn but missed the landing. She finally landed on the roof top area above the nest level as high as you can go with the exception of the peak. Getting better every day but still needs practice on the landings.

Scarborough Yellow Pages Fledge watch July 13th

July 14, 2022 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Marion Nash Reports:

Without all the strong wind that we had over the last couple days Piper is gaining and keeping altitude no problem. She made several good flights last evening and at 6:30 She flew off the lower level around the building chasing Linn who had food and landed on the 10th floor west side gaining 9 floors heigt. When Linn flew off with the food to the east she followed her and landed on the east side 11th floor. Linn then flew off again heading west and landing on the building we call the Kitchen about a block from the nest where she likes to prep food. A few seconds later Piper flew off the east side ,hooked around to the west, gained roof top altitude, found Linn and landed beside her on the kitchen and Linn fed her there. After she had her fill they both stayed there until 9:00 and then we watched Linn fly off and back to the same spot a few times with some of the leftover food in her talons trying to get Piper to fly back home with her but Piper was happy to stay where she was. Linn gave up and settled down with Piper on the Kitchen to watch over her for the night and by 9:30 we packed up and headed home. It was a good day I know now that Piper is capable of gaining and keeping altitude and she has proven twice now that she can get off the ground on her own should she make a mistake and come down and has no problem making multiple flights so we are moving on to daily spot checks. I have posted a couple pictures of the Kitchen you can just make out 2 black bumps on the top of the glass that is Linn and Piper. Sorry only had my phone camera
