AND CANUCK IS HOME!!!

June 09, 2020 - Toronto - Don Mills

Cathy Kerr Reports:

DAY 5 FLEDGE WATCH:  What a great day!! Our boy made it home-yayyyyy!! I arrived to a quiet nest, girls hanging out(Seven was proud of herself, getting up onto the nestbox) and parents on their usual corners. Darn! No sign of him. I did a sweep around but no Canuck. So I drove up the street and started to drive in and around buildings, just in case. I stopped behind one low building and listened-tons of alarm calls by resident robins etc…could it be our boy? I got out and peered back into the forest–on a dead tree–a baby hawk! Not my baby…So I headed back to watch the girls. I hadn’t sat for long, when I heard that beautiful squee of a juvie coming from the area he had been last seen…did I really hear that–again, closer and Dad called back! OH YES!! I ran, going toward that beautiful sound-loud now. And there he was, on the building that he just missed before he went into the forest. ON THE ROOF! Whoohoo! I moved my chair where I could see him and the girls, but he didn’t stay there long-he flew over me to the rooftop of the building across from the nest! Way to go Canuck!! He chased Mom off, then whined at Dad–he was hungry lol. But he did not stop–he flew all over the place, sometimes landing at not so great a place but got himself out and about over and over again! It was fantastic! We called him our Crazy Canuck lol. His last flight took landed him, quite nicely, right in front of the nest box!! He truly was home. His sisters were very happy to see him. He spent the rest of this very, very hot day, resting with his family on the nest ledge. Seven is getting very close to fledging, Hope has a few days to go, unless an accidental fledge lol. A very good day!!  Thanks to Sally & Bob for helping out again!

A first flight is coming soon!!

June 09, 2020 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Lisa Reh Reports:

All hands on deck today by the KW fledgewatch team! A first flight could be within the next day or so.

Fraser reported: “All was quiet this morning from 6:55-8:05. Both parents were present on the tower most of my stay. Two young were easily seen on the porch early but then retired to the shade. The third youth was barely visible. Tony was with me there before heading to work. Very little wing flapping or vocalization even when dad flew nearby.”

Martha Christine and Karen were watching in the morning and Karen reported: “…we heard some squawking and realized one of the young is outside of the nest box on the orange platform to the left closest to King Street. Both parents were in the tower for the whole time but can only see one now. We think Mystery just left headed to Waterloo and we have located the other adult on the tower. I left around 1:30 p.m. and at the time the grine out of the box was behind the nest box in the shade. Hope did a lot of flapping today and for sure she is not the one out of the box.”

Heather reported at 3:07: “Casey is on the orange platform flapping from time to time. Hope is flapping a bit in the box. We think the kids haven’t been fed in quite a while. One parent just came back without food.”

In the evening, there were a few more watchers out. Kim reported: “Got here about 5:15, Rudy was still here. He said they ate about 4:30 and the parents took off about 5. At 6:00 one of the parents dropped a package in the box. Two were in the box and the third was on the platform. The third one then jumped back into the box. All quiet on the outside now.”

All 3 fledglings have been bopping around on the platform, and managed to get back into the nestbox. Janice reported at 9:00 p.m. that all 3 fledglings were safe on the front porch when she left. At 9:30 they could all be seen on the video cam in the nest box, but at 10:00 only one was visible in the box.

2 names for the Etobicoke 4

June 09, 2020 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Marion Nash Reports:

Although the chicks are unbanded this year Due to COVID-19 and the fact that only a swing stage access can be used here we decided to name them anyway as it makes it easier to post information on the fledge watch. We have asked Security to come up with a couple names and our new volunteer. So we have names of Santo and Nifio for 2 of the chicks so far.

Hi Marion and Mark.

Thank you very much for offering me to choose a couple of names for the chicks. My Mom and I choose the 2 names.
First is: “Santo”
and the Second is: “Niño”.
They both are cute words in Spanish that we use to say to my dog Nacho. We choose these names because the chicks are giving us a great support to overcome the grief for my dog’s loss and in some way we want to honor his memory.
The first name mean “saint/angel-someone that is very virtuous.
And the second name means “little boy”.

First fledg

June 09, 2020 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Marion Nash Reports:

As of close last evening Mark and Erica had not seen a fledge but expected one of the boys would go he was crazy active and flapping and running the ledge.
Rob got there at 6:00 AM and saw only 3 chicks on the nest and 1 adult. At 6:45 Am the other adult flew in and another chicks popped up on the center tower building or what we call the Starlight building roof top, must have been a very early morning fledge. 3 more to go!

Thanks Rob and Thanks to Erica for coming out to Help!

Artemis & Casey are getting ready!

June 08, 2020 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Lisa Reh Reports:

Saturday, June 6
All babies are feeding well. Karen, Kim and Tim reported.

Sunday, June 7
Heather reports “I arrived around 11 or so. All kids in the box and the parents have mostly been around too. One of the boys was getting into some semi serious flapping around noon. Hope was quiet and the other boy flapped a little bit. I couldn’t confirm the band colour of the flapping bird. No food has arrived since I’ve been here. Mystery just came back empty taloned and now Enigma as well. Both parents left around 12:30.”

Christine reports:
“I have been at the parking lot for the last two days in the am for about 2 hours and I did not observe any feeding going on either day. Yesterday, the chicks were quite vocal, but no food arrived. Mystery was on the tower. Today, both parents were there flying around and were doing a lot of squawking. They were both on the tower for quite a while. No food arrived.”

Micah, Joy, Martha & Lisa were watching in the evening. Micah reports: “Had a bit of action today! Still couldn’t see the bands very well, but one of them was out on the balcony flapping for about 30 seconds. Enigma dropped of some sort of food as well. Maybe we will see more flapping soon.” Micah also noted that there was a lot of down flying out of the tower at one point and the chicks have relatively little snowy down left. Amazing what a few days and heat will do!

A flock of gulls swirled around the Sun Life tower in the distance and some geese flew fairly close to the nest site and quickly veered away. The sun made it very difficult to watch as it shone right through the tower. One of the adults brought in some food to the top of the tower but wasn’t sharing. At one point one of the adults swooped down after a songbird that flew close to the tower, the lucky rascal got away!

Monday, June 8
Fraser reported: “I was at CTV this morning from 7:30-8:30.
Two youth were visible at edge of nest box, one vigorously flapping for approx my first 10 min. One adult was also present most of the time and escorted a Turkey Vulture out of territory.
Not much other activity. Quite quiet as well.”

Micah reports: I got here at around 11:00, and didn’t really see much activity until about 40 minutes ago. Around then I saw some rather vigorous flapping from Casey a few times, and someone else was flapping too, but I couldn’t see their band. Enigma came around about 20 minutes ago, and circled the tower a few times, and it looked like he was trying to get a fledge to happen.

The youth all have almost all of their down gone, and are tearing apart some of their own food now.”

Kellie noted: “Our little male nestlings can transition to fledglings as early as 35 days of age, and Hope, our single female nestling, as early as about 40 days of age. It could be this week! I think Artemis and Casey are about 35 and 34 days old right now, so could be soon for those two.”

Tony reports: “It’s 8:00 pm and very quiet right now. At 7:28, Enigma arrived with a package and was prepping. Mystery showed up 5 minutes later and she took the package from him on the tip platform. She flew around, landed on the rung at the tip platform and waited, coaxing while the baby grins all screamed for 10 minutes. At 7:40 Mystery took the package to the babies and they ate. They are very quiet now. Mystery is in the middle of the tower on the north side. No sign of Enigma currently.”

David reports: “hopped over to the semi-circular metal frame ‘dish’ sort of antenna that’s next to the box, (where one had been sitting for a while earlier) and then suddenly took off. It headed first for the Hospital, and then for Waterloo, landing on the Sun Life tower sign. At one point after a bit I saw what looked like two small raptors off in the distance to the North East, could have been our Falcons, but wasn’t sure. Then after a bit one arrived with a meal, landed first on a top rail, then took it down to the upper platform to prepare, and possibly munch a bit - I could only occasionally see it’s head from my vantage point on the Hospital parking garage.

At about 7:00 PM it brought dinner down to the box and fed them for a bit. Then it suddenly took off with the remains, flew around with it a bit, and finally took it back up to the upper platform. I get the impression that there’s some definite teasing/coaxing going on. :-) After a couple of minutes it flew down to the outer railing of the lower platform, on the NW (Waterloo) side. Then at about 7:12 it flew off, I think checked me out on the garage first, then flew off towards Kitchener downtown.”

Canuck fledges, unfortunately now missing

June 08, 2020 - Toronto - Don Mills

Cathy Kerr Reports:

DAY 4 Fledge watch, Toronto/Don Mills/Old Harlequin: The day started out well, Canuck was really ramping it up-flying across the ledge, lots of action…he was ready. I spent the morning there, then headed over to check on ICICI when morning feeding was happening and afternoon siesta was beginning. Marion & Bob came for the afternoon. Marion texted me-Canuck had taken his first flight-out over the street, over a parking lot, turned and back over another street to the back of the building across from the nest building. He touched the glass, and came down. Marion & Bob rescued him and into the crate he went. I went over and we did a release on roof of the nest building. Mom & Dad were waiting and a happy reunion. He spent quite a while on the roof-it was getting late and he decided another flight was in order, except he changed his mind, tried to go back, missed and flew across the street and landed 3 floors up. Not a good place, no ledge. He clung there, trying to figure out what to do. He finally turned and flew. Straight at the nest building, but banked a 90 degrees and flew next door to a taller building. Touched the top, but couldn’t grab, fell, recovered and flew, out, over the top of trees, into the forest and out of sight. My heart sank. Not again! Not the way to end the day. Only good thing is that we think Dad sees him, he was calling him. That means he is alive and most likely in a tree. So hopefully, Dad will bring him home tomorrow…

Canuck stays put for another day!

June 07, 2020 - Toronto - Don Mills

Cathy Kerr Reports:

DAY 4 Fledge watch Toronto/Don Mills/old Harlequin: The day started out promising, Canuck was really hopping(literally) and flying along the ledge. Seemed like all was good for a flight but Mom & Dad had other plans. They got fed and Mom stayed in the nest box with the kids pretty well all afternoon, which tends to keep the kids put. But Canuck did do one big boy thing-he hopped up onto the top of the nestbox, just like Mom does! Then there were many alarm calls and Mom & Dad were off like a shot and gone for quite a while. When they came back, it was late afternoon. And things were quiet. We did see a lovely fly in by both parents, in sync,(very cool) with food at the end of the evening. Their bedtime meal  . And after that , the three of them were huddled together at the nestbox, ready for bed lol. Tomorrow is another day…..

Day 2 of fledge watch June 6th

June 06, 2020 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Marion Nash Reports:

Day 1 of fledge watch was uneventful no one flew yet and they are just starting to do some flapping. One of the chicks likes to hide under the camera in the shade so if you only see 3 on the nest cam that’s likely why. When it’s very hot all 4 cram themselves into the same spot in the shade and it looks like no one is home.

Hopper finally emerges!!

June 06, 2020 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Cathy Kerr Reports:

Well, finally!  I have been watching and waiting to see this little face and this morning I finally got a glimpse-for about 3 minutes lol.  I snapped a few pictures from quite a distance , not the best but it was sure good to see him(and I am assuming that it is Hopper, as I saw no legs at all but the boys are typically first out so….).  Should be seeing more of him every day now…
