An evening flight, and disappears

June 29, 2015 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

Sandy took off for a direct flight  attempt to return to the Sheraton.  Not going to make as she was not high enough. She grabbed onto a window frame of the Sheraton and quickly let go and flew across Richmond St. and out of view.  A search was done and no sightings of her at dark.  Wait till morning, I’m sure she’ll pop up.

Another bad day for our beautiful Lilly :(

June 29, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Cathy Kerr Reports:

While out spot checking this evening, I had to rescue Lilly once again :(  She was found in the bushes at ICICI, facing her nest, her home.  Covered in mud, and I was fairly certain, hurt.  I called Mark, and as it was fairly late, Irma and I took her up to Kortright for him to examine her.  After spraying the dirt off her with a fine mist from a spray bottle, she perked up abit but was dragging her wing :(.  Mark hydrated her, fed her, and said she should be seen by Toronto Wildlife vet who had looked after her fractured keel, and that he would take her tomorrow morning.

Sandy Fledges

June 29, 2015 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Harry Crawford Reports:

Sandy went into hiding around 7am, hiding behind the webcam camera.  Not knowing this, I did a ground search when I got down to the watch.  At 8:50am, she took off towards the Hilton and then came back east maintaining good height.  I finally spotted her around 10am.  I was on Sheraton 43 and the light was correct to spot her.  She was trapped on the north side of the penthouse of 120 Adelaide W.  behind those black vertical slats.  She was flapping occasionally.

With the assistance of four Oxford building staff,  up to the penthouse roof we went.  We saw where she was and she obviously got out at the west end of this very narrow ledge.  We then checked the main roof area but she was gone.  When we were on the west side of the roof, Rhea-Mae was seen in the nest ledge and Tiago was on the east side of the Hilton facing in.  Then we could hear her but not see her.  By the time I got back up to Sheraton 43, Tiago had disappeared.  I couldn’t see Sandy.  After checking the Hilton courtyard and one more trip to Sheraton 43, I went back to the south side of 120 Adelaide W and met up with Bruce and Alex.

Chroma is flying well!

June 28, 2015 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Lisa Reh Reports:

On Friday at 9:30 a.m., Caster was perched on the top parapet on the Sun Life building facing east. One of the juveniles, probably Reggie, was perched on another parapet mirroring his Dad as they surveyed the territory. At 9:45, an adult and juvenile were seen flying circles around the building for about 15 minutes. A second juvenile joined in the chase!! Office workers on the top floors could hear the juveniles vocalizing and they were seen as far down as the 14th floor. From 12:30 to 1:00, Dale dropped by. Caster and Mystery were now on the hospital antenna and CTV tower. Two juveniles, including Chroma, were on the CTV tower, and one was on the hospital roof. The fourth juvenile could be heard vocalizing from the hospital roof while lunch was being prepared and feathers floated down from the rooftop! Caster and Mystery both did some fly bys and one juvenile followed. At 6:15, two of the juveniles, could be seen on the top of the hospital that supports the tower. In a blink of an eye, in typical “grine” fashion, both disappeared out of sight. At 7:00, Karen and Janice could account for all four juveniles. Kings Towers was the preferred perch that night which they haven’t been frequenting for the last week or so. Redbud and Reggie were doing most of the flying. Redbud, a.k.a.Redbutt, did a beautiful little song and dance landing on top of the red light on the Kings Towers antenna to end the evening!

Karen and Chris stopped by on Saturday morning at 10:00 before it started raining. One of the adults was on the CTV tower, while three of the juveniles were seen chasing each other. The rain kept the fledge watch team away. On Sunday at noon, one of the juveniles could be seen from Central Fresh Mart, flying around Kings Towers and landing on the roof. At 7:30 p.m., Karen and Chris stopped by after the rain stopped. One was sighted on the roof of Kings Towers and one on the antenna. Two juveniles were in the flight chasing one another. Shortly after an adult did a flyby with a juvenile in tow. Ginnie and Redbud did over 15 minutes of flying and acrobatics. Ginnie dashed off at one point looking like she was on the hunt after some prey! After the adult left, Chroma landed on the CTV tower and eventually joined in the falcon follies! Her flights were strong and she landed well, on top of the Kings Tower antenna. Thanks to Karen, we finally have confirmation of Chroma in flight and she seems to have recovered from her misadventures.

I stopped by at 9:00. The sky was brilliant for a few minutes but very quickly the light faded as the temperatures dropped. One juvenile was hunkered down behind the drum on the CTV tower, and a second one flew in beside it. One landed on the other CTV tower and then a few minutes later flew on top of the nest box and was joined by a sibling. Just when I thought they were all settling in for the night, they started flying again! One to the hospital, one to Kings towers, and one remained on the CTV tower. At least 3 were in sight but it was getting too dark to do a full count. All of the juveniles are flying well and their flying skills are getting better and stronger each day. Reggie and Redbud are at the top of the class, while Chroma is making a great comeback after her rocky start. Ginnie, the last one to fledge, is keeping up with her siblings.

Caster and Mystery are permanent residents of Kitchener-Waterloo and have been sighted year round from BMO in Waterloo, to Sun Life and CTV to the buildings downtown and both St. Mary’s and Grand River hospitals. The kids now need to learn how to hunt in order to make it on their own and establish their own territories. The skills they are learning now will last them a lifetime. From what we are seeing from their parents, they have the very best teachers. Too soon, we will have to say goodbye to these youngsters as they leave their parents’ territory, but for the next month or so we will continue to watch their progress as long as they give us a show!

Soggy, wet weekend

June 28, 2015 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

Finally a break in the weather just as the sun is setting. Sandy is still unfledged, but she is showing more interest in leaving. No flight lessons from the adults today, but they are sitting in places where she can see them flying around and showing interest in joining them. Lots of flapping and screaming today, more than I have seen since the start of the watch.  Bed time food delivered by both Rhea Mae and Tiago around 8:30 this evening. Good, eat and go to sleep, Sandy.

Thanks to my fledge watch team!!

Soggy peregrines!

June 28, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Cathy Kerr Reports:

As all our babies are flying high and well, our official fledge watch has ended and we have switched to spot checks.  My first spot check was Saturday morning, before the rain.  When I first arrived, I could only see one juvie on the Sony logo-would not oblige with a view of their leg so no id.   Windy as all heck tho. Had a parent flying around and off went the juvie.  Waited, was just about to go when in flew a juvie and another jumped out of the nest box(hiding on me lol) and gave chase!  One landed on the Sony sign, other one disappeared.  After abit, heard some chirping(parent) coming from the nest(geez missed that watching our baby) and off the juvie went from the sign and into the nest–blue band, Horton! Dad flew out and the chase was on!!  Lovely flying and off they went!  And so did I!

I returned around 7pm to check on things, such wind and rain!!  I pulled around the corner and saw a peregrine, flying over the road, trying to hover it seemed but getting blown over the park, fighting back, blown again! I was wondering what the heck!!  Then it landed on the light standard right in front of Debeers!  I look and see something on the road–oh oh–not..but no it was dinner-a pigeon!  Guess Dad had it ripped from him poor guy!  Well, he sat there looking at this thing(I have pulled over by now–with my dog in the back seat–watching this)and I am thinking, he is thinking about retrieving this , cars are coming and well, I was not to sit there and watch him get hit.  So what does this crazy watcher do?  Well, I get a kleenex, get out, pick the darn thing up and throw it up and off the road!! lol.  Well, Dad starts kek kek keking(guess I was getting heck for touching his dinner lol)!!  A poor guy was walking down the sidewalk and he’s looking at Dad kicking up such a fuss–he gave him a wide berth and hurried past!!  I finally pulled into the parking lot and looked for juvies-when we left shortly after, I looked and the pigeon was gone!  Either Dad or security took it lol.  I only saw 2 other peregrines, def. 1 juvie and think Mom but they were so wet, it was hard to tell.

Sally & I were back over this morning to check how they made out over night.  We had eyes on 2 juvies-both on ledges and both parents. Mom was on her ICICI letter she likes and poor Dad was hiding out on a ledge out of sight from his family.  He was quite a sight-soggy!! I will attach a couple of pics–hilarious!!  Sally and  I decided to head over to Harlequin to check on them as well(all doing very well, they put on a show for us!!).  After I dropped Sally off, I swung by for one last check, and saw a juvie over on the corner of the 411 building–Lilly?  Maybe or her wonderful sis Morgan, checking on her?  Weather too bad to get a good look, but I was feeling good about it!!

Lilly is catching up at warp speed!

June 26, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Cathy Kerr Reports:

It was back to work for me today, so it truly was a team effort today!  I dropped in on Irma before work, as she took the first watch–here is her report:

Irma reports:

Driving west on Eglinton Ave  I spotted Lilly where Cathy had left her the night before on the east side of the 411 building roof. Had a good view of her from the ICICI building parking lot so that’s where I set up in the hopes that she would fly home. Shortly after she made a short flight to the OFL building lower roof to the west, then up to the upper roof from there. Come home Lilly! Amazingly, like she heard and understood, at 8am she took flight! Behind 411 going east, she turned directly south and headed for home! Cheering her on, I got a few strange looks from the people parking their cars. LOL Lilly made a gorgeous arc but just missed the landing on the ICICI west-facing roof but she circled around and adjusted her approach and landed perfectly on the NW corner of the roof. LILLY IS HOME! At this time, Morgan and Horton were having fun chasing each other around both DeBeers and ICICI buildings. Morgan spotted Lilly and the reunion began as they beak kissed and even Horton landed just a little ways from Morgan. After the celebration and a little snooze, Morgan turtle-walking to Horton and off they went with another aerial show! After watching them for a while, Lilly decided to go back to the 411 lower roof where she really seems at home lately. Once Horton noticed Lilly over there, he headed for her and the pesky little brother just had to buzz her. Smart Lilly waited for Horton to land back at ICICI before she too headed for the same roof and landed beautifully on the same corner as she had before. Horton, of course, just had to buzz her again but this time he had Morgan screaming at him and batting at him in the air as she flew next to him. What a great big sister Morgan has become! After a disgusted look at Horton, Lilly moves over to the NE corner to put more distance from her and Horton and who can blame her. One more buzz by Horton and Lilly says enough, a girl needs her beauty sleep and off she goes to 411 south lower roof for her afternoon siesta. At 2pm that is where I left her knowing Lucie would be arriving for watch at any moment. A really fun watch seeing how well Lilly is flying!

Lucie took over from there–she reported lots of flying and trying to keep up was abit  fun but everyone stayed up and that is what was important!  She also said Dad drove off SIX turkey vultures who dared venture near ICICI building!!

I joined her later that evening to see Morgan & Horton way off on the blue glass building past Eglinton & Wynford.  Horton then was off and around–catch me if you can!!  And she did–got a few bumps in even lol!!  Watch out Horton–soon there will be 2 sisters after you!!  Sally & Irma joined us about then.

Sally reports:

Hiya
I joined the watch for the last couple of hours with two on the blue condo bdg North east of the site - quite a distance! Flights like this are when you’re thankful to have the use of a scope! happily saw that Lilly is flying about although cautious with distance. Worried that she would try and stay o’night on the DeBeers bdg but she flew over to what may end up being her “bed” of choice - the 411 roof. Chester flew off south not long after I arrived and we didn’t see him again. Morgan settled on the ICICI roof and Horton flew off due west aiming for something (someone? Dad?) and Mom was hunkered down on Foresters “r”.

Hope Lilly does ok over the forecasted rainy windy weekend.

And what a nasty weekend we had!
