Tracy Simpson Reports:

With the start of the watch fast approaching folks have been checking in on the camera to see where ours boyz club is at. This capture was sent to me and you can caption it any way you like but the truth is, there is no way to make this outfit look groovy cool. Too incredibly funny!   Thanks Ninja for trying to rock that look anyways!!!!!

Friday at MEC. Oh Boy.

- All Reports

Tracy Simpson Reports:

We left off the three girls at MEC with one missing, one low and one in a tree.  This had Bruce, Katherine and I out early in the pre-dawn hours positioning ourselves and checking up on everyone that we could find.  Hawkeye was still in her tree by MEC 4 and with the rains coming she was due for a very wet day.  While we were watching her we noticed that she was holding her beak open slightly even when at rest.  Bruce and I both agreed that after her face plant into MEC 3 AND 4 the day before that one of those bonks may have sprained or damaged a portion of her beak.  We decided that keeping a close eye on her was in order and if she came to ground again we would be looking closely at her features and deciding whether a vet consultation was needed.  Ieva was still nowhere to be found and Adrianna was no longer on the overhang at MEC 2.

Bruce set himself up under the overhang next to 4 so that he could continue to watch Hawkeye while I walked the perimeter of the other three buildings.  During my walk I was unable to locate Ieva or Adrianna at the base of any of the buildings. This meant that our girls were hopefully off the ground and somewhere,  it was now a matter of figuring out just where.  Another walkabout in the complex allowed us to discover Adrianna over on the west side of Hurontario.  She was vocal and active and looking none the worse for her trip over to her new location on Accenture. On one of his rounds Bruce noticed that Adrianna was no longer where he had been seeing her all day and he began to search the area for her new location. He found her over on the CIBC building across the street on the low ledge approximately three stories up.  Best part was that she wasn’t alone! On the ledge beneath the one where Adrianna had landed sat Ieva.  Both girls in sight and both girls safe, what could be better.

Back to Hawkeye. She remained in the tree for the entire day sitting out the rains as best she could. She was absolutely drenched. She moved throughout the tree repositioning several times but never once made a move to fly.  Her beak remained open in the position just slightly a jar that we noted earlier but we were able to see her preen her feathers several times throughout the day.  When the rains rolled in they came in hard and both Adriana and Ieva got an incredible soaking; they were drenched and so was Bruce. He remained watching Hawkeye staying out of the rains as best as he could and every once in a while when there was a break in the rain he would get up and check on the two on the CIBC building.  Grace and Winston joined Bruce later in the day and the rain kept everyone settled where they were. The watched closed for the night at dusk with Hawkeye still in her tree and the other two girls at the CIBC.

!!! Not quite an empty nest !!!

June 13, 2015 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Lisa Reh Reports:

Rudy arrived to a scream fest at 6:00 Saturday morning. Both adults were on the antennas and left at 7:00 to hunt. Janice took up the watch from the hospital parking garage a little after 7:00. All six birds were vocalizing. Mystery was on top of the tower and Caster on the same level as the nest box. All 4 kids were on the balcony of the nest box. At 7:10, Caster flew to the nest box with a package but didn’t give it to the kids. He did a couple of loops over the CTV building trying to entice them out. All four were vocalizing very loudly but nobody tried to follow Dad. Caster gave up and dropped the package in the nest box. Breakfast was over shortly after and even though they have full crops, they were still screaming for more. Many pedestrians near the hospital were looking up to see what the heck was going on. Caster and Mystery were both vocalizing loudly from the tower and the four juveniles ignored them, just like kids do. At 7:30 the fabulous four figure out that no more food is coming and they go back into the nest box to chill out. Every now and then one or two would come out to the ledge to take a look around. At 7:40, Mystery is on top of the tower and Caster flew in with another food package. He sat on the railing at the same level as the nest box but on the other side of the tower. Both parent vocalized loudly at the kids. All four came out of the nest box again, but they just sit there. For 15 minutes Caster called to them but they didn’t move. Eventually, Dad gave up and dropped off another small package to the group. Three out of four ate a second breakfast. At 7:50, Caster took off and Mystery started vocalizing to the kids again, but they still ignored her. At 8:00 all four were out of the nest box, one vocalizing more than the others. At 8:20, Mystery moved down to the railing on the same level as the nest box. Mystery has a missing patch of feathers on her belly called a “brood patch” that she either pulled out or they loosened and fell out in order to incubate the eggs. This is one way we can identify her from the Caster if we can’t see a band.

Karen and Kim joined the watch a little after 8:00. Just after 9:00, while Mystery kept watch on the railing to the left of the box, little Reggie jumped down out of the box to the platform!! The sisters all screamed loudly at their little brother who was the first to leave the nest box!!! Reggie stayed out on the tower platform and was rewarded by Caster who brought him a food package. There was lots of wing flapping during the morning and at one point, Ginnie almost fell off the ledge in her excitement. Reggie managed to get back to the nest box himself by 12:15. Just after noon, Redbud jumped out onto the platform under the nest box. Chroma also ventured out of the nest box to the media platform to visit Caster and stayed out for about 20 minutes!! Mystery delivered a food package to Redbud, and you could see her pulling off the feathers as she ate. Ginnie wanted some food too but would not jump off the nest box to the metal platform. Redbud disappeared from sight on the platform while her siblings were all back in the nest box resting at 1:45.

Marg and Sarah took up the watch from 4:45-6:00. Ginnie was on the front of balcony of the nest box for most of their watch. 1 or 2 of the others were back on the orange grate of the platform. They were all pretty calm except for a few screaming sessions. There were some exuberant wing flapping sessions and one took a run and jump towards the middle of the platform. Ginnie did some heavy wing flapping from the nest box balcony. She rolled forward and fell forward. She also made a little run and jump on the balcony. Just before Marg and Sarah left, Ginnie was on the balcony, two came into the box and the fourth was just beside the box. Karen was back on the watch at 6:45 p.m. Mystery came in and fed the three young ones that were all out on the platform around 8:00 and all were accounted for.  Rudy was back on the watch to tuck the youngsters in from 8:30-9:00 p.m. Mystery came in with a kill at 9:00 and the kids squawked for a bit but while she was plucking her prize. They all went back into the box and went quiet. She then flew off towards the hospital with the food. A tiring but rewarding day had by all!

Almost ready to fly

June 12, 2015 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Lisa Reh Reports:

Friday morning started with much vocalizing from 6:00 – 7:00 a.m. observed by Tony. All 4 were still in the nest box and safe and sound. One of the adults landed on the edge of the box but probably didn’t bring any breakfast. This upset these babies as the parent flew up and sat above them on the railing. A lot of wing flapping was observed possibly from Ginnie. Fraser arrived at the watch a little after 7:00. Each of the young spent some time on the edge stretching their wings. The rain did not drive them inside. Reggie seemed to be making the most noise as the others sat quietly. One adult was perched near the top of the other CTV tower for sometime and left just before 8:00 a.m. There was food available to them as they were seen eating from time to time. It was rainy on and off from 10:00 and well into the afternoon. The young were still seen peering out of the nest box at noon and went in and out all afternoon. Debbie and Jon were on the watch from 7:00-8:00 p.m. and all four of them were active. At around 7:30 Caster moved to the hospital antenna and the screaming and wing flapping picked up.

!!! Some amazing flying today!!

June 13, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Cathy Kerr Reports:

What a day!!  I arrived this morning to find Horton on the roof of the ICICI building and one of the girls visible on the nest ledge.  I was joined by Caroline and we waited, wanting to make sure noone else had fledged. And we waited.  It was Morgan in the nest, no sign of Lilly.  Irma joined us and we started a search(just to make sure).  Three and a half hours later, Lilly flapped her wings and was in the nest the whole time!!  Enjoying a lazy Saturday morning–lucky her!!!   Things were pretty quiet for a while(they do enjoy their afternoon siestas lol).  Sally joined us later that afternoon and then the fun started.  Lots of beautiful flying by Horton-roof top to roof top, flying with his Dad(upside down even!), into the nest ledge–we were very impressed!!  And so was his sister Morgan–so much so, she decided to try it for herself!!  She kept altitude and made it to the ICICI building top floor!!  Great first flight and she was promptly awarded with a meal by Mom(who first sent Dad off to get it immediately!!).  She decided that was enough for her and there she stayed for the night.  Lilly stayed put in the nest and Horton decided those letters on the Sony sign were just the best bed last night, so picked the “U” to sleep on tonight!! Looking forward to some more great flying tomorrow, as long as the weather holds!

Jenna and her babies Great flying! Morgan

Sad news! nest has failed.

June 11, 2015 - Brampton - Courthouse

Marion Nash Reports:

This report came in from Winston on June 8th and since then the adults have not been around much at all.

I got a message from Melanie at the CH with some strange observations this morning.

The female was on the ledge, not the nest area, and she was not being super aggressive as she usually likes greets us.

Striker is not on his usual perch, in fact nowhere to be found.

When I came to take a look, I saw a kestrel on one of the antennas which they stopped doing when the peregrines were present.

When I got to the window I found no adults, no chicks, no eggs and two owl pellets.

Stay tuned for banding news….

!!! Your support is most needed!

June 11, 2015 - Burlington - Lift Bridge

CPF Postmaster Reports:

June 10th - 2015 (9:30am - 5:10pm)

All three juveniles still accounted for with Wellington being the most active. He even mastered a very difficult landing on the cables, with ease. Located Stella around 1:45 as she was inside a beam half way up the Hamilton tower.
This is the stage where the unexpected can happen, especially with the males.

If any of you out there are able to and willing to help out at this watch, it would be much appreciated. The close up views of the adults hunting and bringing food back to the juveniles is spectacular.

Remember this peregrine watch location is the NO FRILLS location, without any fan fare or the press coverage, but the views of their daily activities up close and breathtaking.

We are no longer allowed to park in the main lift bridge parking lot, so I have to park at the lot on the lake side closest to the lift bridge. Then walk along the Lake Front Trail towards the canal.

regards,
Barry

!!! Horton’s been busy!!

June 12, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Cathy Kerr Reports:

On Wednesday Mark & Marion got a call from our great security staff at Amexon that we had a baby down–right at the entrance to the nest building!  They put caution tape around him and stood guard until Mark & Marion arrived–many thanks to them for keeping him safe!!  He deaked Marion out and flew across the street, over the small park, cleared(barely) a fence and landed in someone’s backyard!  There Mark found him, staring at himself in the basement window.  Mark scooped him up, got him safe until we could put him back up on the roof that night.  Unfortunately we were unable to put  back on the nest building but we put him safely up on the sister building-ICICI.  I kept an eye on him yesterday–he seemed to be staying put with Mom keeping an good eye on him not far away.  I watched him playing in the rain today, flapping and running around abit.  I had to leave for abit but went back at 8pm.  And where did I find the little imp?  On the “M” of Sony Music!! Mom was watching proudly from the Sony symbol to the left of him.  This feat has taken his brothers at least 3 days to do in the past lol! We will be watching tomorrow to see if he can repeat it!!
