A very hot humid day, but no drama today. All three juveniles in view all day, none of them taking any flights! The two young females have yet to take their first flights!

July 01, 2014 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Mark Nash Reports:

Sunday June 30th - 2014
Well, today was one of those watching the paint dry days! It was hot and humid, and thank goodness for the constant breezes that persisted all day, right up to 8pm. Had it not been for the constant winds to keep us cool, we surely would have melted in the streets today.

The two young female peregrines spent all day again in the nest ledge again today with the occasional flapping and allot of screaming to their parents to food when ever they were in sight. Lorne, the little male fledgling who had finally been able to return back to the nest building yesterday after his disappearance, spent all day on the next column ledge over from the nest itself watching his two sisters. He spent most of his time sleeping, and getting two feedings by mom.

Much later in the afternoon, he was able to get one level up and ran the retaining wall ledge around the north side of the nest building. He visited his two sisters on several occasions and eventually got the nerve and dropped down back into the nest ledge itself and finally joined them! He never flew at all today.

By 9pm, the light was disappearing along with the overcast that was moving in, the winds died out and the three disappeared from our view down into the nest ledge for the night. Both adults were visible roosting on the upper north side of the nest building keeping a close eye on the juveniles in the nest ledge and they tooo bedded down for the evening.

Just to recap, neither of the two young female babies have taken their first flights yet. Please all, keep your eyes to the ground, as they were heavy at banding and most likely will end up very low or come to the ground as some point during their first few flights!!!

We closed the fledge watch down for the day and departed for home.

!!! Great Flying

June 30, 2014 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

Olivia appears to have found her wings, as we did not see her camped out on a lower roof top this evening. The kids enjoy chasing Rhea Mae and Tiago and each other. Earlier this evening I had two on a high roof top adjacent to the Sheraton Hotel, close enough that I could see the band colour of one of them. I think it was Trout. He wasn’t there long before he was off chasing one of his siblings over towards the Trump Tower and back west towards the Hilton. Wonderful to see and I hope others are enjoying the air show that the young Falcons provide.

Spot checks will continue for the next few days.

Thea Doing Great

June 30, 2014 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

Thea continues to do well and even returns home for the night.  Big flights are not seen as yet, as the buildings do block our view. Erin and Windwhistler continue to pay lots of attention to her , keeping track of where she goes. Wonderful to see.

June 30, 2014 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Harry Crawford Reports:

Morning Shift:  A couple of flights were seen in the early morning
along with some calling.  Around 10:30, I saw and heard Olivia on
the north east corner of one of the lower buildings about twelve
floors up.  When Alex arrived, we saw mom feeding all four chicks on
the stage roof of the opera house.  Shortly after, three flew north
and circled the area around Canada Life, the fourth flew south and
ended up on one of the taller buildings.  All appear to be doing
well.

!!! Three Fledglings Doing Well

June 29, 2014 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Marion Nash Reports:

I had a very lazy morning and even slept in! Finally roused myself and was outside at 5:09pm!!
I spotted two juveniles on the Rio-can building. One was on the top floor and the other one on the second floor down. I eventually had an identity of the top one – that was Linden, yellow tape. I did not get an ID on the other one but I do have suspicions as to who it was.

I found Haven on the top north side of the tall condo and I saw Malik fly over the bus bays , over Duplex Ave and over the residential area chasing or honing in on something but he missed. He flew back around the south side of Rio-can to the east.

The lower of the two babies made up his mind and flew. It was quite a competent flight over Canada Square and to the short condo. I saw him hesitate once he arrived as he seemed not to know where to land nor what to do about it. However, he flew to the west side and bumped a window resulting in a tumble of a few floors BUT he recovered. Linden flew off his perch and flew to his brother who flew back over Canada Square, quite high, turned and made his way back to the short condo where this time he landed on the top north west corner balcony. He clung there for many minutes, not too sure whether or not to move. Eventually he did and explored the ledge on which he had been clinging.

Linden and a third juvie had a quick came of catch and talon touching and then settled on the antenna on top of Canada Square. I just was unable to get band colour on two of the youngsters but was very pleased to see the three of them at the same time! Because there was a slight aerobatic display from two together I think they were Linden and Equinox. I felt that the juvie who flew from Rio-can to the south (short) condo was Chinook simply because of the fluttery flight and the fact that he did not get to the top on the first go and bonked his nose on a window. No matter, that was a long flight made longer because of circling to get the height the second time to land successfully. His skills are improving and he is maintaining height which is crucial to young peregrines. It enables them to fly and roost out of harm’s way.

!!! Fledge watch Day 3 - Lorne goes missing, suddenly 5 hours later, he returns home!!

June 29, 2014 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Mark Nash Reports:

Sunday June 29th - 2014
Short report today with the important stuff. The little fledgling named Lorne - (Blue tape), fledged this morning at 9am and didn’t do very well.. He took flight at around 9am and flew west towards the Investors Group building and was quickly turned around by Linn - (his mom). Lorne was turned around south on Milner headed back to the nest building but was unable to make any of the upper elevations that he was trying for and slammed into the west side windows of the Yellow pages building, and bounced off back the glass and went into a spin and ended up falling out onto the middle of Milner Ave on the roadway.
Marion and I scrambled to dodge the traffic in an effort to retrieve him from the ground, but he ran south down Milner Ave, got some air and ended up in the small trees that make up the boarder of the Yellow pages parking lot and Milner Ave. We searched and scanned the small trees for over an hour and was unable to find him.

We resumed our positions, (with Marion on the west side of Milner Ave to be able to view the entire west and south sides), and I positioned myself on the north east corner to be able to view the north and east sides of the building, and waited for him to re-appear.

Back on the nest ledge, the other two juveniles remained on the nest ledge with little activity for most of the day.

Just before noon, Lorne finally re-appeared, not from the trees, but from the ground (obviously hidden in the scrubs on the ground below the trees) and bolted north up Milner Ave. With a strong south west wind, he was carried north of Progress on Milner and quickly disappeared from our view. For the next hour, with Marion in position watching the west and south elevations, I searched Milner Ave as I walked up to Sheppard Ave and back several times, but was unable to locate him anywhere. By tis time, Dave and Bonnie had arrived and they held their position on the north east side to watch the nest ledge and he other two juveniles that were still in the nest ledge.

Very quiet most of the balance of the day until just after 5pm with out of no-where, Lorne finally re-appeared high in the sky, with s strong south west wind in his face to give him altitude, he slammed into the upper aluminum roof slope - ABOVE THE ACTUAL NEST LEDGE,,, slipped down the sloped roof and fell down into the upper walkway above the actually nest ledge directly above the nest ledge itself!! He was home!!

Moments later, he appeared on the upper roof retaining wall ledge about the nest ledge. Wow, this bird has a very hard head to have been able to survive this second impact!!! For the next few hours, he ran around the retaining wall ledge and finally ended up dropping down onto another lower elevation, down onto a ledge cavity close to the old nest ledge that his parents nested in two years ago and that’s where he remained until darkness.

Linn, (his mom), finally rewarded him with a huge pigeon diner later on in the evening.

The other two juveniles still in the nest ledge got a small feeding throughout the day, but only one feeding all day. At darkness, all three juveniles were in view on the north side of the nest building and we departed for home.

Attila joined us this evening later on in the day and will be out early tomorrow morning to open the watch.
Stay tuned……..

Windsor Sunday Flight Report

June 29, 2014 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Marilyn Weller Reports:

It was a wild day at the bridge with Lancaster doing some great flights, Sojourner in a tree and struggling to get enough height, and Maya coming to the ground. All are up in safety at this writing so a big sigh of relief.

Special thanks today to Cathy, Marliese, Paul G., Maureen, Jeremy, and Vicki for toughing it out and watching through heat, downpours, and some tense moments! Lots of curious people stopped to watch our falcons today.

We’re still waiting for ShiBiKeSi to take her first flight. Maybe tomorrow morning?

Thanks everyone for all your great support!
Marilyn

Olivia is still taking her time

June 29, 2014 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

Olivia is still hanging tight to her comfortable spot just south of the Sheraton Hotel. Although high, it is low compared to the surrounding buildings.  Buzz, Trout and Ralphie are having a great time chasing Rhea Mae and Tiago with short games of tag, screaming all the way. What great flying and so nice to see for a change.  Most times all the activity is blocked from our view because of the office towers.

Hopefully tomorrow, Olivia will regain her confidence and put those wings to work.

Olivia has left the ledge

June 29, 2014 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

I met up with Harry and Alex this morning at the Sheraton site. Harry had four juveniles accounted for. Three had been seen flying well and Olivia is on a lower roof top just south of the Sheraton Hotel.  Lots of vocalization from the kids. We took advantage of viewing from a higher elevation and found Olivia on the lower rooftop.

A short while later, I was headed back to the King St site, saw lots of lying from the kids. They were chasing each other, and one adult around the height of the Sheraton Hotel. The adult would sneak into the nest ledge while the kids flew past screaming the entire time, then the adult would fly out and chase them.

Very good flying and what a thrill to see them  together and flying well. Olivia stayed on this lower elevation and did not react to all the activity.

We did see one adult flying huge circles east of the Sheraton and closer to the King St territory. It was circling and gaining height to allow it to land on the North side of the KPMG building at Adelaide and Bay St.
