Very quiet day - rain, rain, and more rain. Then it rained more!

June 28, 2013 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Marion Nash Reports:

June 28th - 2013
Not a big report today due to the inclement weather and the fact that I only went out after 5:45pm
Saw all three young yelling for food from the top of the black building. Haven was picking up scraps for them but it was not enough to keep them quiet.

At 6:07 Stormin almost caused me to have a heart attack. He chased a pigeon from over the black building, across the old bus bays and across Eglinton Ave. By the time he was over Eglinton he was UNDER CAR ROOF height and just missed a car. The pigeon he was chasing went that low and he followed. When over the sidewalk he pulled into a steep curve and climb and missed the Rio-Can building by a whisker! The pigeon escaped - this time!
NOT FUNNY Stormin!!!!

Cheers
Lyn

Loki is terrorizing both his parents and his sister! No place to hide now!

June 28th - 2013
Rain, Rain, and more rain, but despite rain, these birds don’t seem to notice (other than being wet of course). Shortly after 5pm, the rain finally slowed down to a drizzle and the adults started into hunting mode and several meals were brought in, but now without Loki persistent harassment’s. This little guy just didn’t give it up throughout most of the day and was very active in between the short periods of rain.

No one told him you shouldn’t be flying around like this in the rain, (or he was simply not listening)! KIDS!!

He spent allot of his day dive bombing his sister and both of his parents in addition to chasing them around out to most of their hiding spots out at the Investors Group building to the west - (the building that we call the kitchen) where the parents often prepare the food just before its brought in to the nest building.

Just before the “falcon follies” typically around 8pm, the rain had completely stopped, and Ruben flew over head with a piece of food with Loki in hot pursuit. I saw the first mid air food drop for Loki, and he was in the right position to catch it. Out of nowhere, Linn suddenly appeared at warp speed and snatched the food out of the mid air just feet prior to Loki actually being able to catch it!!

Talk about “peeved-off”!! The little male fledgling chased his mom to no avail, as she easily escaped his pursuit and eventually flew off to the nest building and gave the food to his sister still on the ledge that she had earlier fledged to.

By 8:20pm suddenly, every thing stopped! Both of the juveniles had tucked them selves back onto the building ledges out of my view and both adults had taken up a roosting spot on the Yellow pages building obviously finished for the evening. It was actually quite spooky that all activity simply just stopped!

By 9:15pm, the heavy overcast really made it dark and almost impossible to see the upper corners and building ledges and I closed the fledge watch for the evening.

Many thanks to Winnie for coming out and keeping me company this evening, as it was a very long wet lonely day for the most parts, as the rain obviously scared most people away. Oh yes, right, I just found out that this is a long weekend, Canada Day weekend!

Sorry, no pictures today, just didn’t have the opportunity to get the camera out given all of the rain.
Stay tuned……..

!!! ICICI - AM-E has finally fledged! Scared off the roof but fledged never the less!

Hi Mark
AM-E has finally FLEDGED!! Unfortunately, it was not her idea! Someone lit off firecrackers in the park and she spooked–UGH. Thankfully, she flew about 3 times around the building, with Superman, and landed back up on the roof with her brother!!!! Phew!!! Dodged a bullet there! But now that she knows she can FLY, I think we will see her go on her own tomorrow??!! Lets hope so!

Superman continues to be awesome–driving his parents(esp. Mom) crazy!! No where for them to hide anymore lol!! He chases them all over!! Just wait til little sis gets going! Thanks to Bruce for all this info–he did a long shift watching today and let me have the night off!

Cathy

PS Love the pic of Superman looking into the camera on the top of the roof!!!

!!! ICICI Photos - late arrivals but a good one of diner time!! Its yellow.

June 27th - 2013 - Diner time!
Again a big thank-you to Jared for sharing a still image with us he captured with one of their video cameras that his company has on the nest building roof. Mom flies into the roof top and delivers food to her young ones. Not so small looking now as you can easily see, it appears that dinner is actually yellow in colour!
Hmmmmmm?? Yum Yum, (does it taste lemon flavoured)?
Thanks Jared!

!!! First Flight in the pouring rain - The lady in red - (Neira) has finally fledged!

June 28, 2013 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Mark Nash Reports:

June 28th - 2013 - AM Report
In one of theos rare opportunities when I have some time in the field at a fledge watch, I will attempt to do a mid shift report. Now pouring rain, much cooler in comparison to the terrible heat and humidity of the last three days, it would appear that the young ones here at the Scarborough Yellow pages nest site have recharged and have lots of energy. Darn!!!!! Not today!!!

At this stage of the fledge watches, (now into week four for some), and just about the time when we’re all looking for an excuse to convince ourselves and others that the juveniles won’t fly (or fledge) in the pouring rain, I thought I would share a quick story to let all of the non-fledge watchers know what’s shaking this morning in a heavily overcast dark and gloomy pouring raining day on the fledge watch at at least one of the nest sites.

As for peregrines (both the adults and the juveniles), they simply didn’t get the memo or the text to tell them that you should not be flying in the rain! It is quite obvious that the peregrines are not reading the same books that we have all been reading. Peregrines live in the outdoors and typically don’t have a house and roof over their head to protect them from the elements. We have long since learned that they will do what ever they want to do, when they want to do, and any time, every day rain or shine. It’s just another day in the life of a peregrine.

Early this morning, the “Lady in Red” - the unfledged female Neira at the Scarborough Yellow pages nest site jumped into the air and took her first flight. Well, not really what you would call a “real flight” in bird terms.

Quickly losing altitude, (little Neira as she has been named), did some serious window washing with her wings on she slid down five stories of windows as she made a desperate to grab onto numerous window frames as she fluttered five floors down. She eventually caught a little air,, (and that only happens when you actually spread your wings open), and fluttered to the rooftop on one of the four corner columns.

Still 3/4 the way up on the building, she still has allot of altitude and no worse for ware after her ordeal.

For the past three hours, she has been running the leading edges in an effort to get closer to her parents that have strategically placed themselves in a high position on different parts of the upper portion of the building that has allowed them both a clear view of each of the fledglings position.

Little Loki, the young fledgling male, is still high, and despite the pouring rain, takes a couple of shorts flights this morning while chasing his dad Ruben around with a fresh kill that he has just brought in to an upper ledge on the nest building. At one point, BOTH parents attended and both beak fed him on separate occasions on the same ledge. Quite heartwarming actually!

Shortly after the feeding, Loki and dad were observed and photographed roosting one above each other on the same corner only 6 feet apart of each other chilling out and having a father and dad moment. It’s now really pouring rain and you hardly see across the parking lot!! Its starting to flood this portion of the parking lot!!! Time to move again!!!!
Where’s my boat!!

Stay tuned………..

ICICI - What a show!!

CPF Postmaster Reports:

June 22rd - 2013
Again, sorry for the late posting as we are receiving so many observation updates from all of the nest sites during the on-going fledge watches that we’re struggling to keep up. With some fifteen-hundred back logged e-mail, we’re trying to pick-out the most important communication in an effort to prioritize responses, separate observation reports so that they can get posted and answer as many e-mail as we can given the limited time we all have to get to a computer and the internet. Remembering that many of us have been 14 plus hours in the streets every day for the past three weeks and no-one has been able to get into the CPF office for weeks, (let alone getting much computer time)!

Cathy reports:
Had some help today at ICICI!! Many thanks to Pierre, Barb, Lucy & Richard for their eyes on our two! They report that Lucky (aka Superman) is flying superbly!! What a guy–he is even doing a little “J” ing!! - (adult looking landings)!

He decided at around 8:45pm to try and land on a letter like his Mom & Dad, only to slide down off!! But he got his wings and flew back to the nest building only to fly right back to the De Beer’s building, with Mom in quick pursuit!!

Around to the back of De Beer’s they went with him landing on the top floor and there he stayed for the night! His sister finally decided to show her face and ventured on the ledge of the roof, but that’s as far as she went! But at least we saw her lol. Everyone was very impressed at how lovey Mom & Dad are–they really are a sweet couple. This is a great site to watch some wonderful flying–maybe tomorrow our AM-E, (Amy) will try some!!!

While a little late and out of sequence,- (sorry for the late posting), I have just received a few interesting photos that I have been able to post. Much thanks to Jared who works for a company that has office suites at the Don Mills & Eglinton nest site building - (150 Farrend Drive). They have security cameras on the upper roof top and are able to get some incredible views of the peregrines when they are visible to the cameras.

After looking at the first photo, you gotta ask yourself, who’s really looking at who here?? They say big brother is watching,, well this is really the case here!!!
Enjoy…….

Learning the chase and how to hunt

Lyn Reports

All three looking good and again RamJet bugged his sisters learning the chase.

5:01 PM all three young in the air. All flying more confidently.

5:04 Haven flew in with food parcel Tinia took it - (red tape evident later on)

5:05 Stormin flew in with food package and began prepping it

5:06 Haven chasing a pigeon, youngster chasing Haven ( I think this was a juvie female) learning to hunt.

5:10 youngster flew to Stormin and a tug-o-war ensued - don’t know who won (this may have been Ramjet)

!!! Luna and Carina are rock-in!

June 27, 2013 - Toronto - Don Mills

Mark Nash Reports:

June 27th- 2013
What a difference 48 hours can make with a young peregrine! Reports now streaming in from Donna, Karen, Sally and Murray that both of the “girls” have finally spread their wings as they say! Carina, no longer held back by her bruised confidence (and likely bruised keel) after hitting the window last week has taken to the skies. Now, it appears that there is no place for Quest and Kendal to hide for a little time out! The games of “catch me if you can” and “tag your it” has started with the both young fledglings tearing up the skies.

Gaining altitude is no longer a problem as the highest parts of the surrounding buildings have been easily mastered by both of the fledglings, and the local avian inhabitants is now starting to realize that maybe this neighbourhood is not the greatest place to hang around right now, at least not in the air space above the building’s!
So now, the best part of the fledge watch has begun, as over the next twelve weeks, some serious training will be on-going as Quest and Kendal will be teaching the fledglings all of the life skills that they will need to survive on their own.

Karen writes:
Just an update on Carina and Luna. Both have been busy girls flying high today finally have settled down across on the pink building next to Harlequin around 4:00 to shortly after 5:00pm both of them preening/cleaning their feathers… must have a hot date tonight.
At one point today I saw one of the juvies on Kendal’s corner above Dad, I don’t think he was happy to give up he’s corner for a screaming juvenile.

Sally writes:
There have been some nice flights today. Carina seems to copy Luna now in chasing Kendall off his favourite corner perch. At one point noisy chattering alerted me to Carina chasing Kendall out of the nest box (I thought it was Quest at first but then watched Carina fly to Kendall’s corner again – spotted her yellow band. After staying put for a while on the roof of 240, there was some chasing going on between the siblings, and (I think) Quest. They seem to have favoured the 240 building today but some back and forth to the pink glass building. I did lose sight of everyone but Kendall after 4:30, so nice to hear whey they are at the moment.

Murray writes:
I stopped by Harlequin for half an hour.
Both Carina & Luna were on top of 240.
Luna decided to chase a gull that flew by. The gull was not impressed! Lol

Both Kendal & Quest were on top of the Harlequin Building.

Stay tuned………………

Hi Mark

Rather quiet day at ICICI–esp. after yesterdays excitement! I think AME is afraid of seeing Mark again, as she barely moved all day lol. Irma, Marion & Bruce all reported she stuck pretty well to her favorite corner, doing some turtle walking, a little wingersizing but that was about it!

Superman, on the other hand, when not watching over his little sister, was doing some great flying! Bruce observed him sneaking(or trying to) up on Mom on her letter, to which she would squawk and fly off, with Lucky in pursuit! I think its a new game for him, using Mom until his sister decides to fly and play with him!!! I had the pleasure of seeing this–he really is doing well!! He joined his sister at the end of the night, had some lovely sibling time, then off he went to roost for the night. AME made me a little nervous when she decided to do some wingersizing & hopping at 9:25pm–I mean really, its getting dark and NOW you think of flying lol!! But no, she finally settled down and was on her favorite corner when I left 20 minutes later.

Cathy

11:00 AM Am-e was on the corner where Cathy had left her just above the entrance

11:20 mom brought in food and Lucky chased her around several circuits around De Beers and ICICI until mom landed beside Am-e who got the food.

11:50 dad brought in food and Lucky chased him to the roof top of ICICI until landing beside his sister and this time he took the food.

Both chicks spent the rest of the afternoon beside each other napping until I was relieved by Bruce at about 2:45.
