!!! NEW NEST IN WINDSOR

June 27, 2012 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Frank Butson Reports:

We apologize for the delay in posting, computer issues and everyone being busy in the field held these posts up.

reporting for: CPF Windsor Co-ordinators Dennis and Gwen.

Thanks to Jerry Peltier for these wonderful photos and all of his contributions to the CPF reports.

CPF was made aware of a new nesting site in Windsor. Jerry was able to capture photos of both the male, who is unbanded clearly in Jerry’s incredible shots and the female who is banded. In the photos you can see she has a purple US Fish and Wildlife band(they fade to look pink). This indicates she was banded in the US.  Jerry,Dennis and Gwen will all be trying to get the colour band for a positive ID of the female.

CPF Volunteer Reports:

Yellow Page Site - Report for July 2 & 3, 2012 Quick Check

We did a quick check at the Yellow Page site evening on July 2, 2012
When we arrived around 6:00pm. Things were really quiet. Checked all faces of Yellow Pages building and the Investors Group building (the kitchen), could not find the sight of a single falcon.

So I came back today (July 3) after work (around 6:45pm) hoping to see more action. I was just a little bit luckier only able to spot Linn first on top of the kitchen. She than flew across the parking and perched on one of the chimney stand facing west. She did not seem concern that the fledglings and Reuben were not around. I stayed there with her for awhile before I have to leave for home to make dinner.

So I am starting to think that maybe I was at Yellow Pages too earlier in the evening (between 6:00pm to 7:00pm) that either the fledglings were still napping after the lunch/snack or they were out there learning how to hunt with Reuben.
Note that on July 1 when we were there, there was no sighting of falcons until around 7:15pm when everyone came back from their hunt.

Hopefully, I will see more of them next time I visit.

!!! Flying strong!

Don Mills report - July 3, 2012

I decided to do another check at the Don Mills site today after work hopefully to get more pictures taken of the family.
Arrived around 6:00pm and found no one at first.

Then a couple of juveniles came in from the north side and landed on the roof of Harlequin.
Because of the overcast and the position of the fledglings, I could not see the leg bands to identify them. But judging from the size, one very likely is Blaze since it is so much smaller than the other.

I heard some another falcon calling from the nest and was expecting to find the other fledgling there. To my surprise, it was actually Quest. She was having a great time preening herself.

Just want I was ready to leave, I spot Kendal quietly hiding from the rest of the family perching on a ledge of the Thales building.

!!! Everything going well!

July 02, 2012 - Toronto - Don Mills

CPF Volunteer Reports:

July 2, 2012

We arrived at the Don Mills around 4:20pm Jul 2 Monday.

We immediately spotted someone was home in the nest box but due to the light, we could not identified who was that.
Then we followed the non-stop calling of two fledglings to the parking lot directly opposite to Harlequin and it was great that we found Patty, one of the fledge watch volunteers we met at the Yellow Pages fledge watch a few times. Patty was there for a few hours already, keeping a tab on the family.
We were able to located Kendal who was sitting on a corner of 240 Duncan mills. He was taking a break in the shade while overlooking Amora who was sitting directly across him on the 220 Duncan mills facing east.
While we were snapping pics of Amora (who must love all these paparazzi attention since she was doing a lot of poses and showing her bling), someone was quietly lurking around the corner of the same building. From the size of it and Patty’s note of the fledglings’ movements, we figure that this quiet little thing is Mira. Just when we want to take more pics to confirm, our camera battery died on us.

The two fledglings took flight almost at the same time. They were flying strong and far and circled around those apartments north of don mills road.

Quest just showed up at the golden building next to Harlequin at around the same time.

We did not spot Blaze during the time there but Patty mentioned that she saw him lurking around at the back of the nest building.

We stayed for about 1.5 hour and during the later part also met a gentleman who lives nearby. He told us the pigeon and hawk populations history of the area and some great stories about the amazing birds he saw when he was with MTO.

!!! Sun Life resident adult male still a mystery! He dawns a Black over Green colour marker band and a purple coloured USFW band telling us that he is a US produced bird.

July 02, 2012 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Some great shots of Statler’s mate, still a mystery as he has not been very cooperative is showing us his leg band numbers. Despite all of Tracy’s efforts over the past week, his identity still remains a mystery. What we have confirmed via her visual obervations, is that he dawns a Black over Green colour marker band and a purple coloured USFW band telling us that he is a US produced bird.

July 3rd - 2012
A big thank you to Jacquie from our good friends in Buffalo from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation who was kind enough to send us some additional history of Statler.
Jacquie writes:
Hi Mark,

I just wanted to tell you how delighted we are to hear that “Statler” is alive and well and nesting in Waterloo! It is amazing to think that the only bird we were able to band from the Statler nest in 2010 was rescued in 2011 and now nesting in 2012! I wanted to send you some pictures of her from when she spent the night at the Erie County SPCA and of her release on top of City Hall on June 15, 2010. May she have many happy and productive nesting seasons in Waterloo!

Statler As A Fledgling.

July 04, 2012 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Frank Butson Reports:

The Canadian Peregrine Foundation has many friends south of the border. Some of them watch the nests in Buffalo NY,including the one from which Statler is from. They were very excited to hear Statler was nesting up here. One of the ladies who goes by Sage Kadow, immediately asked if I would like some photos of Statler when she was just a fledgling herself.  Of course I knew our new nest hosts the Sun Life Financial Centre in Waterloo would like to see “their girl” so I graciously accepted the offer.

By the next morning, Sage had sent me these 3 shots of Statler being released after she had been rescued as a young Peregrine. Statler was not hurt at all,she just needed to be put back to a rooftop. She was banded before she was released, the only of the nests 3 to be so. That band is how we know that she is now here residing at Sun Life.  Thanks to Sage and all of our Buffalo friends for rescueing Statler, without you Sun Life would never have been graced by Peregrine Falcons this season.
