The usual day to day conflicts in the daily life of a peregrine falcon.

June 25, 2012 - Toronto - King Street

CPF Postmaster Reports:

June 25th - 2012
Tonight we were up on the roof enjoying the temperate weather and saw two juveniles sitting on the roof ridge of 91 King Street East.

After a few minutes, we saw one of the juvies take wing and fly south east to a building in the direction of The Esplanade. Along the way, we heard a peregrine calling, and suddenly there were 3 peregrines in the sky around the Esplanade, the juvie, and one with dinner, and another one following closely behind. The adult with the food and one of the peregrines disappeared from view, while a juvie landed on the roof of 85 The Esplanade, looking westward in the direction of the parent (with dinner).

Out of nowhere, a smaller bird started harassing the (larger) juvie, making multiple strafing runs and eventually forcing the juvie to take flight. Out of nowhere, an adult raced up and engaged the smaller bird in a brief dogfight – raptorfight (?) – and ran the smaller bird off before disappearing behind Commerce Court.

Yellow Pages - two sitting on top of building

June 25, 2012 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Ann Brokelman Reports:

Stopped in after work 5:30 to see how the Yellow Pages boys were doing.  Saw one at the very top running around the edges. Was sure the wind would blow him off.

The second male was on the 3 level up preening himself.

No sign of adults or 3rd male.

The wind was horrible there. I could barely stand looking up.

Four peregrines in view

June 25, 2012 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

At 8:00 p.m., two juveniles on the top of the King Edward Hotel and two peregrines on One Dundee Place. One of them an adult the other with it’s back turned, but I am guessing it’s the second adult. Thought I would see a lot more of an air show, but it’s quiet here , just like the Sheraton nest area.

One and one

June 25, 2012 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

Early this evening, I had one adult on the nest ledge and one juvie on the north east corner of 150 York St. Back down to street level, I can no longer see the roof area of 150 York St, but then I had two on the nest ledge. One adult and the other, not sure if it’s the second adult or the one of 150 York St., flew to the nest ledge. I was hoping to see a little more activity, but very quiet. I think with the cooler temps today and higher winds, the juveniles are taking advantage of the wind and staying beyond the nesting areas.

!!! Mom Plus One

June 25, 2012 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

Today I managed to see one of the juveniles and mom hanging out together on the nest ledge but otherwise they’re hiding from me!

Hopefully it means they are staying safe and high!

I’ve also heard that Jack’s two other offspring from his other nest site have fledged successfully which was wonderful news to hear!

Sad News to Report at Canada Square

June 24, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Marion Nash Reports:

A call came into the office voice mail from a gentlemen who works in the Yonge and Eglinton area to inform us that one of our falcons was hit by a bus on Yonge St and did not survive. We have confirmed that it was little Brisk. It was very upsetting as we had hoped that since he seemed to be flying well after his first rescue that he would be a survivor but it was not to be.

Lyn and I have so far put in about 120 hours each at the Canada Square nest site and have conducted 2 rescues. Simcoe is flying very well and Solar has very much improved her flight skills. We hope the next couple days will see her flying with Mom, Dad and Simcoe high and strong.

Crazy birds

June 24, 2012 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

Watching this afternoon, can’t get an accurate head count for all four. I think I may have had three at one time.  Two are doing long flights, chasing each other and even flying in the heavy rain that went through the downtown area around dinner time.  Adults have been sitting in odd spots, but I think that may be that the kids are venturing further away.  This evening I had Aphrodite come south of Front St. I could hear a juvie screaming but could not see it. Then Aphrodite came flying over head and out of my view. Moments later, two flying into view and headed towards the King Edward Hotel. At 8:30 I have one adult on the nest ledge,in camera view, and two juvies on the rigging arm on the east side of the hotel roof.

Hanging around today

June 24, 2012 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

Today, at least two of the fledglings are hanging around the area. Currently, Aphrodite and one of the males are on the King Edward Hotel, and Windwhistler and Erin are on Dundee Place.  At times, I think I see a third juvie, but they move around a lot flying well and they all don’t stay in one spot long enough to get an accurate head count.

!!! Rhea Mae and Tiago

June 24, 2012 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

Checking the web cam, these two seem to be courting again. Didn’t see any of the juvies when I was by the site this afternoon.

A Quiet Day at Canada Square

June 23, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Tracy Simpson Reports:

After yesterday’s marathon session we spent a lot of the day just sitting and watching the peregrines watch the world.

Haven spent much of her time on Rio-Can or flying into old nest ledge looking for food and scraps I guess. Stormin was around a lot more than usual too. He even carted some food to the nest ledge and then took it off and sat on the very north west corner of the black building; this was this evening.

We saw fledglings but only one at a time so I am not sure who we saw. Marion definitely identified Simcoe by the yellow when he was on the old nest ledge. We also think we saw Brisk by the way in which he lands on the old nest ledge. We saw one of them flying, high, with Stormin and Haven joined in before the youngster called it quits and disappeared.

All in all, a lovely quiet day for me. My old bones do not take kindly to a lot of walking.
