King Street Watch; Three Fliers and One Ledge Potato!!

June 12, 2012 - Toronto - King Street

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Observations by Marion

Aphrodite left 1 Toronto sometime early this morning and I found her when I arrived on the watch at the north west corner of the Wellington Square at the corner of Colborne and Victoria behind the King Ewdard where she spent most of the day. She made a short jaunt to the South West corner at Wellington and Victoria about 4:00 PM and spent the rest of the afternoon there. About 6:00 shortly after Paul arrived to close off the days watch with me a pair of Kestrels came in to pester her and were dispatched by Mom and Dad. this happened 3 times before she decided to try for the condo tower north on Victoria. She did not quite make the upper roof level and landed on a ledge that is part of a balcony about 5 floors down.  Mom did try to get her to take flight again to get to the top but no luck she was staying put and there she laid down to sleep.

The boys were seen flying high earlier in the afternoon landing on the roof of the nest building together so they have been flying high and strong for the last couple of days.   Dundee, the youngest of the four, is still on the nest ledge and has yet to take his first flights.  He is a bit of a ledge potato these days in the heat and humidity and I can’t say that I blame him.  He should take his first flight any day now.

!!! Still two on the nest, the other two unaccounted

June 12, 2012 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

Late afternoon shift, Bruce and I spent our time looking for the two newly fledged.  They both had moved from their perches last reported by Harry. Adults seem to be spending a lot time west of University Ave, near the Shangri La building.

Bruce had one adult do a few lower  passes over the Richmond Street tower of the Sheraton and the pool area. I went up to 43 a few times and looked down onto those areas with no sightings and no vocalizing when the adults flew over.  Last food drop to the nest for the two unfledged, was approximately 7:30 p.m.  Just have to wait for the two missing to pop thier heads up.

Everyone in the same place

June 12, 2012 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Harry Crawford Reports:

Morning Shift:  I found Marlee on the building at University and
Adelaide around 7:30am.  He had worked his way around to the
south-west corner.  I was able to see him from King and Simcoe.
He went around the building at least twice this morning, flapping
his wings and hopping around.  At one point I could see him when
I was in front of 120 Adelaide.

Yesterday’s fledge is still on 111 Richmond but is moving around
the roof area quite a bit.  When I left, he was on the north
green railing.  Mom made a food drop around 9am - seen from 43 on
one of several trips up there.  The two remaining chicks on the
ledge were rarely seen from the street this morning.  When I got
home, they were both standing on the box camera.  When I just
checked [1:55pm] one was on the box camera and the other in the
nest box.

!!! Not Monday but Funnyday

June 12, 2012 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:

Yes I know it was Monday but here in Windsor it was funny day. Viper was flying around and landed on a truck that was going over the Bridge, he stayed on it for a couple of truck lengths then flew off. Eddy flew on top of a roof and landed on a whirly vent so she was going around and around until it stopped. General Brock and Twitter were flying around with complete ease. Eddy is struggling with her flight skills but with time I’m sure she will be doing great. Freddie and Voltaire are wonderful parents. They are all worth watching flying around. Our Volunteers are doing a great job from daylight to dark, without you we would be lost. Stay tuned for more pictures. Remember wpfw2012@gmail.com if you can join us locally please do so.

Another Fledge in Etobicoke; All Doing Very Well

June 11, 2012 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Observations made by Frank;

Regatta fledged and made it to a high rooftop elevation and regular flights are now being made by Euro and Windward.  The last female to fledge, Olympia, still has a great deal of down on the top of her head but is now beginning to flap and exercise much more.  Her first flight is expected soon.

Both Euro and Windward have made it back to the nest ledge and Regatta also returned there by the afternoon.

Frank will post a more detailed report once he gets access to a computer but we wanted to give you the brief!!

Three in the Air; Tristen Found

June 11, 2012 - Toronto - King Street

Tracy Simpson Reports:

After finishing a Project School Visit presentation in Toronto, I had some time until my next appointment and so headed down to 18 King St East to help out Marion and Zoe with the watch.  When I arrived, I first spotted to juveniles and Zoe so I quickly parked and made my way over for an update.  She had three juveniles this morning clearly indicating that Tristen was back!!  One young one was on the nest building roof, another on the King Edward Hotel and a third on 1 Toronto St.  I set to wandering to try and help with the who, what and where of it all.  The chick on the nest building roof that Zoe was watching was Aphrodite, her red tape clearly visible, who was still on the elevation where she was released the night before after her rescue.  The second juvenile was on the roof of the King Edward Hotel sitting right next to the chimney.  He preened, stretched and flapped but was not willing to give up his identity by showing off his tape colour.  So I decided to make my way south for a better view of our 1 Toronto St. bird.  Marion and Zoe had eyes on everyone just in case a nect flight was coming and they were joined by the vigilant parents both perched on the condo across from the nest building.  When I got into position, I was able to identify the sleeping juvie on 1 Toronto St. as Grayor!  His first flight was early this morning and he’s done a great job maintaining his elevation and making it to the rooftop.  That meant that the little one on the King Edward was Tristen!!  For the past couple of days, the parents have been trying to incite another flight from this little one but he remained hidden from all of us somewhere in the shade as the heat was really too much for man and beastie!!  Erin delivered a small food package to him on the hotel which rousted the other two who were looking to join him.  It was really cute to watch as the juveniles could all see one another and were flipping their heads at each others antics.  I left the watch at around 2pm and Marion continued the vigil with Zoe and later on, Bruce.  Tristen took his next flight over to 1 Toronto St to hang out with Grayor and the two boys both took another good flight over to the roof of the nest building.  Wanting to join the party, Aphrodite took a really good flight over to 1 Toronto St only to find that the boys had left and gone over to where she just left from!!  Let the game of tag begin!!  All the while, the little wee one, Dundee, remained on the nest ledge behind the pillar opting to stay in the shade today and rest up seeing as he had the whole place to himself.

Both Adults Still Onsite; Janet Away From Home

June 11, 2012 - Mississauga - Executive Centre

Tracy Simpson Reports:

I made a brief stop at MEC yesterday to retrieve the rescue net that was left in case Janet came down a second time.  My time there was so short ( had to get to other watches ) that I really didn’t have time to look closely but what I can say for sure is that both Sante and the unidentified adult female were both present at the nest site.  I could not see Janet there but she has been most often spotted to the north at the condo complex at Hwy 10 and Eglinton.  Last time that I spotted her she was staying high and looking very good.  Sante, the resident male, was also still defending her and caring for her at that time.  I will be back as soon as possible to take a look for her and check in on how she is doing.

Marlee found again. Second fledge found

June 11, 2012 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

Bruce arrived on site and found today’s fledgling on 111 Richmond St ( building under renovation, across the Street from the Sheraton ) on top of the Hvac unit on the roof.  When I arrived I took over watching this bird and Bruce went to find the other.  It didn’t take him very long to find Marlee on the “Krensa” building at University and Adelaide. He was sitting on the black metel struts on top of the building.  Not much activity from any of the juvies. Two remain on the ledge. Adults flying the area. At one time Tiago took up position on the north east corner of the Hilton, without reaction from Richmond Street fledgling.  It started to light rain into heavier rain and the birds settled down.  Forcast to continue to rain for the next  little while.  Bruce decided that the rain will hold the birds down for the night.

Whew, What A Whirlwind

June 11, 2012 - Burlington - Lift Bridge

Sue McCreadie Reports:

Oh my gosh what a whirlwind we have been on for the last few days.  Thanks goodness I have a girlfriend Sally who gets up really early.  This morning she beat us to the Bridge.  I had gone to the store to get a few groceries to make lunch and Bill had head down to the Bridge.  As I was making lunch, my doorbell rang and there stood Sally with a very wet baby peregrine under her arm.  When she had arrived at the bridge, Jimmy (green band) was apparently walking the pier and when she parked her car, she saw him take off and try to land on the hand railing of the lift bridge.  He couldn’t quite make it and landed in the canal.  He started swimming (the wing stroke).  She tried to snag him with a tangled up dog leash, and as she was doing so, she prayed that someone would come along.  Lo and behold, a fisherman came along and between the two of them, a fishing rod and net they were able to rescue him.  Now, Sally has a very wet baby peregrine under her arm and she wonders what to a do now.  So she grabs a liner from the dog bed in the car and stuffs baby Jimmy into a crock pot she has and off she drives to my house.  She and Bill must have passed one another on the way so she stuffs Jimmy back under her arm and back to the Lift Bridge she goes where Bill and David Williams were waiting with the rescue box and towels.  We put him in the garage to calm down.  A call was placed to Mark Nash.  Mark arrived shortly after lunch and after a quick examination Jimmy looks just fine.  He will be held over until this evening when Mark will examine him again and release him from the roof of the Lift Bridge Tower.  Thank goodness for Sally and her early rising and the unknown fisherman who answered her prayers.

Carrey spent the best part of the day still on the roof where he was released last evening.  Dad delivered a food packet to him there.  Around 3:00 this afternoon he decided to fly and with a couple of missed landings had to circle the towers a few times.  He landed safely on one of the beams on the Burlington Tower.

Port Hope is still hanging out in the nest box.

My goodness, what will this evening bring.

At least one fledge, possibly two

June 11, 2012 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Harry Crawford Reports:

Morning Shift:  Around 5am from home, all four chicks were seen
on the webcam.  By 6:30am, only two were visible.  At 7am, when
I reached the Sheraton, no chicks were visible on the nest ledge.
I then did a fairly extensive ground search and checked ledges
on low buildings - nothing.  Finally, I started to look for the
adults which required going up to the 43rd floor of the Sheraton.
Again, nothing seen.  Around 9am two chicks appeared on the nest
ledge and both adults hung around the north side of 120 and 130
Adelaide W.

After returning from another trip to 43, I ran into Rosalind who
had joined the watch again.  When we moved to the front of 120
Adelaide she spotted a chick on the roof area of 111 Richmond W.
We later found out that the chick was on the roof of 120 Adelaide
before flying down to 111 Richmond - well done.  Mark dropped by
and gave Rosalind a radio and instructions on how to operate it.
From home at 3:20pm, one chick was on the box camera and one on
the nest ledge - the third one not in view - possible fledge.
