BIRD’S THE WORD - Kyle Holloway of the Canadian Peregrine Foundation paid a visit to the Best Start class at St. Marys School on Feb. 28, with Peregrine Falcon,Nova.

From Bay Today,North Bay Ontario’s News
Story and photos by Paige Shemilt/Special to BayToday.ca
It’s not everyday students get to see an endangered species up close and personal and on Friday students at Widdifield Secondary School were fortunate enough to see a peregrine falcon firsthand.
Kyle Holloway, with the Canadian Peregrine Foundation and Oscar the Peregrine Falcon and Alexandra a Great Horned Owl,were at the school to deliver an informative, interactive, and fun workshop on the endangered fowl.
The main focus of the presentation dealt with pesticides including DDT, and how the chemicals affect the population of these birds.
“The best way to make changes is to get to kids. Youth are who is going to make the change,” says Holloway.
He says that since it is harder to change the mind of adults, the foundation focused on kids in grades four to twelve.
Seeing the creatures up-close allowed the students to explore what their role is in helping to keep the bird’s habitat clean and safe and free of pesticides. For more information on Project School Visit visit http://www.peregrine-foundation.ca/education.html#project

!!! Quest Lays Her First Egg!!!

April 19, 2011 - Toronto - Don Mills

Tracy Simpson Reports:

An exuberant Donna Hayes called our head office this afternoon to let us know that Quest’s first egg has appeared!  This is fantastic news and met with great fanfare from our friends at Harlequin Enterprises.  We await the hopeful arrival of more eggs to come and watch as these two birds come together to raise their first family.  Our gracious thanks go out to the staff at Harlequin Enterprises Ltd. for allowing CPF staff access to monitor these birds.  For updates, please check back on the new Don Mills location page

!!! 2 eggs and all is well

April 19, 2011 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Tracy Simpson Reports:

On friday April 15th, Tracy and our co-op student went uptown to Yonge and Eglinton where 2 eggs were observed on a ledge at 2200 Yonge street. The pair have chosen an excellent ledge with a view of the evenings sunset. The pair look very healthy and keep their eating area on a lower floor.

The male has been busy with many scrapes located between two different floors.  There was one egg laid each in two separate scrapes and a third laying just outside of yet another scape on a lower level.  These eggs, however, were abandoned and the yet to be identified pair is focusing their attention on incubating the most recently laid clutch.
