!!! Banding Day Success!! 4 hatchlings!!

June 18, 2010 - Mississauga - Holcim

Mark Nash Reports:

What a great day indeed!!With over 50 people assembled to witness the event, 4 very healthy hatchlings were removed from the nest ledge today, banded, sexed, weighed and returned to their parents in good time.

With a huge thank you to Barb, Dave Armando and all of the staff at Holcim, along with a big thank you to Mark Heaton from the OMNR and all of the helpers, the young baby hatchlings were banded and returned to their parents.

A great big thanks to John and Brian, the rock climbers who repelled down from the upper roof of the superstructure down to the nest ledge level, safely scooped up the hatchlings and made it possible for us to band the chicks.

The new resident adult peregrine parents were both on the scene to “supervise” the extraction of the hatchlings. Poor John Miller was once again the “villain” that had to stay on the nest ledge until after the banding to distract the resident parents while their hatchlings were being banded.

A great day in all, and FOUR very healthy chicks (and Holcim’s newest family members)!!

While the hatchlings were a little younger than we had aged them at via the earlier photo that was sent into us to get an age on them, at least this year we were able to band them before it was too late because of their advanced age as last year.

Three males, and one female, named:
Armando, 22 days old, 630 grams
Clarkson ll, 23 days old, 710 grams
Eva, 24 days old, 785 grams,
Holcim, 19 days old, 460 grams

ANOTHER GOOD DAY

June 18, 2010 - Burlington - Lift Bridge

Sue McCreadie Reports:

When we arrived around 9AM, we were able to locate Brant sitting tall on the “Man Cave” otherwise known as the Old Nest Ledge.  Dad has obviously taught him well.  We searched everywhere for Diana and were unable to find her.  So we just waited her out.  Barry and Linda Cherriere arrived a short time later and Barry focused his scope on the “Man Cave” watching Brant.  A short time later, a second head appeared from down in the Old Nest Ledge and all of a sudden the “Man Cave” became the “Co-Ed Cave” as Brant and Diana hung our there for most of the day.  Dad took one of the juveniles so high this afternoon that you almost needed binoculars to see them. This evening, there was a lot of flying and talon touching going on.  All seems to be well.  Brant and Diana are flying well and the landings are amazing.  Hopefully, we will see more lessons in the next few day.

Zera continues to do well

June 18, 2010 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

Zera, the young female continues to do well. She is staying up and making short flights from roof to roof in the immediate area. This evening she found a spot on a near by roof top, at nest ledge level, where she will overnight.

Malik was flying with one of the adults earlier this evening. He did a couple of circuits around the nest area and then over to the King Edward Hotel. He sat there for the remainder of the evening. Food was delivered but he didn’t seem to interested to eat. He settled in for the night, with no additional.

!!! Little Joe comes down again!

June 18, 2010 - Mississauga - Executive Centre

Mark Nash Reports:

Little Joe was finally flushed from the tree where he spent the night by a group of very angry crows. Sadly, not a very strong flight at all and after three more collisions with the glass at MEC 4 and MEC 1, he finally ran out of steam and again came to the ground, this time very hard indeed!. Thank goodness that both Bruce who was on hand and a huge thank you to MEC security for actually being able to catch him up and do the rescue. He was placed in the rescue box by Bruce and keep cool in the fire room until my arrival from the banding event at the Holcim cement plant in Mississauga that took place this morning.

Further examination of little Joe after a much needed cool down and his willingness to accept water, it would appear that he has not sustained any life threatening injuries ans is no worse for wear. Exhausted and simply out of gas, but still very feisty with lots of attitude. That’s good news indeed!!!.

He will be held over for another few hours so he can be examined further prior to a green light for his release back to the nest building. With all three of his siblings still on the nest ledge and yet to fledge themselves, Little Joe will be released back to the upper roof top area under the cover of darkness as usual, so his siblings will not be scared themselves with our presence, and so that Little Joe will not be forced into a panic flight with our presence during his release.

Still Waiting

- Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Frank Butson Reports:

It seems everyone else has flyers. Today the 3 boys were left alone alot. Mom stayed just out of their site. Blackberry,DotCa and Mercedes were flapping abit more today, gaining wing strength. All day they were not fed, prompting alot of screaming every time an adult was in view. Angel did many touch and goes trying to urge the boys into flight but she got no takers. Finally at 820pm they were fed a big meal. This settled them down for the night. These guys are still being babied by Angel. She was beak to beak feeding them again today.

All 3 Chicks Beak to beak feeding of Blackberry and DotCa as Mercedes runs to get his share

!!! Zera Found, High and Dry

June 17, 2010 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

Zera was later located by the afternoon shift of volunteers. She came off the press building and made her way to the mezzanine level of the building north of the press building. After that she then made her way over to roof on the corner of Toronto and King St.  When I came  on shift I had not seen her at all. A little concerned, Bruce and I started a wide sight line scan of the roof tops.  I check the King Edward Hotel and found her there.   She had food delivered around 7:30p.m.This is where she will over night.

Malik , what a flyer! He is making good progress with his landings, so much so that we have to really watch to make sure it’s not an adult. Good for him!

He will also overnight in the same area as previous.

!!! PM Report - Three still on the nest ledge.

June 17, 2010 - Mississauga - Executive Centre

Mark Nash Reports:

Well, its 9:40 pm and all is well, sort of. Joe, the little male that was the first to fledge is still hanging high in a tree where he ended up after his first flight. Both parents brought in food to the three remaining juveniles still on the nest ledge and are stuffed with food and not very active all this evening. Food was brought in at 6:19pm, 7:00pm, and 8:10pm and all three juveniles at the nest box ate their share without much squabbling. At darkness, Joe remains very quiet and almost motionless. Fingers crossed that he stays put until we can get here in the morning, as it is very unlikely that he will be able to get out of the tress and get any altitude given how close he is to the ground.
Stay tuned…….

Still Waiting on a Hatch

June 17, 2010 - Etobicoke - William Osler

Tracy Simpson Reports:

I stopped in at 2:00pm this afternoon to check on the incubation progress of our unknown adult female at the hospital.  Initial observations about this site had two eggs back in March that disappeared after a territorial battle between females.  At last observation near the beginning of May saw an empty nest tray and no serious courting amongst the adullt pair.  As of June 1st, we have 3 confirmed eggs in the tray all thanks to the folks at William Osler that continue to offer unwavering support for the nesting pair.

Today’s check of the nest tray through the magic peep hole revealed a sleepy female nestled down on top of her developing eggs.  Considering that hard incubation began at the very least on June 1st, that would put our progress at a minimum of 17 days as of today.  Stay tuned as we continue to check the progress of this female and attempt to identify our new girl on site.

!!! First Fledge at MEC! Its “Joe”

June 17, 2010 - Mississauga - Executive Centre

Mark Nash Reports:

Hot, humid and almost unbearable with no escape from the sun, it was chaos at MEC this afternoon! Just when you least expect it, when all four of the hatchlings were laying down and moving each of their positions to avoid the boiling sun, with absolutely no warning, at 3:30 pm, one of the juveniles leaped into the air and took flight,,, well sort of.

Two attempts to gain altitude and several soft bumps on the windows of MEC # 2, the fledgling lost altitude and sailed across the Robert Spec Parkway making one final collision with the windows at MEC # 4 and finally down to the sidewalk at the east end of the building.

Scambling to his rescue, and just at my arrival, he took flight again flying just over the tops of cars in to the rear parking lot banging several car antennas and finally flew over the waist high retaining wall at the south end of the parking lot. He collided again, but this time with the soft tree branches amongst the leaves.

Tracy finally arrived and was able to back me up and keep an eye on this first fledgling while I returned to my spotting position to watch the nest ledge with the other three juveniles.

After several hours of viewing at him with the scope and bins, Tracy was finally able to see the marker tape on his USFW band and he has been identified as the juvenile named “JOE”- with the Green marker tape!

!!! Zera Has Left the Nest!

June 17, 2010 - Toronto - King Street

Harry Crawford Reports:

Zera has fledged!  The first flight likely took place at first light
this morning.  Jan arrived on site at 6:30am and Zera was not on the
nest ledge.  After considerable searching, she found Zera on a
satellite dish on the roof of 34 King West, the press building.
Later, she appeared to drop to the roof and out of view.  I did a
ground and building search of the surrounding area to no avail.
Paul got access to the roof of 1 Toronto and also couldn’t see
anything.  We did hear vocalising and it couldn’t have been from her
brother.  Both adults remained in the area, particularly
around the nest building.  Hopefully, the volunteers will figure
out what gives this afternoon.
