Fluff Balls the size of cantelopes!

May 25, 2009 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:

What a beautiful morning. Freddie and Voltaire were at it when I arrived at 7:00 this morning. The chicks are like teenagers “when it comes to food, you step on there foot and there mouth opens!” I know that I knew that peregrines grow to full size in roughly 40 days but to see this growth from one day to the next is astounding.  Our parents are very keen hunters and very diligent parents. Freddie might wear the pants in the family but Voltaire sometimes tells him which leg to put on first. The chicks spend far more time alone and are wandering around freely on the nest ledge. They have discovered the food stashes in the right corner of the nest but I can’t say that they are attempting to raid the fridge on their own yet. We should have some newer chick flicks in the next  couple of days. It was alot cooler tonight and when we left the youngsters were huddled in the corner wishing they had a space heater.

Incoming Fly by

A Look At the Big World

May 25, 2009 - Burlington - Lift Bridge

Sue McCreadie Reports:

Bill and I arrived at the Lift Bridge around 12:30pm.  “Cirrus” was on the front face of the Hamilton Tower and “Sir” was no where to be seen.  At 1:10, “Sir” appeared from inside the nest box so I guess he had been assigned the watch.  “Cirrus” appeared on the cable arm above the parking lot.

We are now CERTAIN  that “Cirrus” does not like Turkey Vultures in her space at all.  Once again the chase was on, over the Skyway and before we knew it, the TV was gone from sight, and I bet he will never enter into this area again.  Throughout this encounter, “Sir” stood guard on the corner of the nest box.  “Cirrus” returned to the cable arm.

At 3:30pm, “Sir” was finally relieved of nest box duty as “Cirrus” brought food from their cache on the Hamilton Tower and fed the little ones.  While “Cirrus” was feeding them, we were very excited to see one of the juveniles make its way to the front of the box and look out at the world beyond.

We left around 4:15pm and all seemed to be in order.  The juveniles had been fed and “Sir” and “Cirrus” were taking a break on their favourite roosts.

Dinner's Ready WOW - What's Out There

Very Mobile

May 25, 2009 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

Not too much activity this morning. I could not count all four, but found the fourth up against the side of the retaining wall next to the nest tray.

Rhea came to the ledge while I was there. She began picking up feathers and tuffs and attempted to “feed” the chicks with the little bits of leftovers attached to the shaft of the feather.  But the chicks weren’t buying that and soon moved away from Rhea and out onto the nest ledge.

Banding of the Sheraton Four is expected this Thursday or Friday.

Stayed to for final confirmation with Day and Time

!!! Freddie’s Background

May 24, 2009 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:
I thought why not post the response that got us Freddie’s background from Ohio.We were pleased as punch. Thanks to Scott @ Ohio Wildlife
Dennis and Gwen:
This is the first report I have of Freddie so who knows what he has been doing the last 6 years.  He was banded on May 21, 2001 at the Commodore Perry Hotel in Toledo, Ohio.  There were 4 young in the nest box that year Gabrielle, Frieda, Freddie and B.G.  Frieda, Freddie and B.G. are named after Bowling Green State University located in Bowling Green, Ohio that is about 15 miles from the nest site.  The mascot of the university is the Falcons.  We actually had the mascots Frieda and Freddie at the banding.  The adults that year were male Fury *G/A and an unnamed female *7/X.
Voltiare is from another district of the state.  I have forwarded your request to them.
Let me know if you have any other questions.  I would appreciate several digital photos as I will forward the information to Bowling Green State University.  They may want to contact someone about the nest site.  I will give them your contact email or if you prefer, please provide another contact.
Thanks
Scott

The chicks are getting huge

May 24, 2009 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:

Wow what a weekend. Sorry for the delays in reporting computer problems and I’m no wizz kid. The chicks are roughly half the size of the adults today.

I just found out this week that the maskot Freddie the falcon for Bowling Green Universirty was present at our Freddie’s banding. Freddie was last in contact with the University folks back in 2001. I’m waiting to hear back from the people that were involved with Voltaire. It was my very exciting pleasure to pass word on Freddie’s family to Bowling Green through Scott @ Ohio Wildlife. Thank you to Jason and Jerry for the great shots that were sent to UBG and the posted shots.

Remember for you locals we will be needing spotters as launch day looms closer. Thanks to all the people that are taking such a fabulous interest in our duo.

Two Peregrines on Site

May 24, 2009 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Bruce Massey Reports:

Spent about 2 hours at the Scarbourgh Yellow Pages site.  Found the Female and saw her for 1.5 Hrs. She then went to the Nest  and the Male flew out and over to the Building to the West (The one with the interesting Upright Window Structures).  Here he spent about 5 minutes preening, but unfortunately all I could see was his Mauve/Red Band on his right leg, his left leg was not in view and was blocked.  he then flew North and to the West out of sight.

No Peregrines Seen

May 23, 2009 - London - TD Tower

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Sadly, we have not received any updates or information on any peregrine activity in London Ontario again this year.  It would appear that the London nest site web pages has not been updated since 2006 and we have no news to report.  We are hoping that anyone with any knowledge or news as to the activity of the London peregrines.

Partial Bands Seen

May 23, 2009 - Mississauga - Executive Centre

Bruce Massey Reports:

Found Both parents outside of Nest Box, therefore took the time to check on 3 Eyesis on the Camera, and they were huddled in a Ball on the Camera.

Took an hour or so to see if I could determine their Band Numbers.  No luck in getting Complete Numbers but from what I observed we have 2 NorthWestern US Birds.
