Peregrines at Bay and Bloor

May 30, 2009 - Toronto - Four Seasons

Harry Crawford Reports:

At 5:03pm, two peregrines flew past my living room window heading
west.  The female was carrying a pigeon and the male was along for
the ride.  She landed on the north-east corner of the roof of 1057
Bay, directly above the Tim Horton’s and proceeded to prepare her
meal.  The male disappeared.  This is the first time I’ve seen a
peregrine in this location.  Usually, they prefer the taller
building next door, 77 Bloor West.  Peregrines continue to be seen
in the area but not as frequently as in the past.

Soar Like An Eagle

May 29, 2009 - Burlington - Lift Bridge

Sue McCreadie Reports:

We arrived at the bridge around 1:00 pm and met up with Barry and Linda who had been there since noon.  When we left tonight at 7:30 pm, no one had witnessed a feeding.  The chicks were definitely hungry as every time “Cirrus” went to check on them, they came forward in the box and were begging for food.  A storm was approaching from the North West, so I’m afraid that the little ones will be going to bed hungry tonight.  I’m happy to report that we are able to count heads today and there are definitely 3 young in the box.  “Sir” spent most of the evening on the cables while “Cirrus” was hunting and hunting and hunting some more.  She had a couple of close encounters, but never connected.  It would appear that there are definitely fewer pigeons in the neighborhood and “Sir” and “Cirrus” have not learned to hunt under the Skyway yet.

The excitement of today occurred around 3:00 this afternoon.  “Cirrus” flew from her perch chirping.  She circled and circled trying to get higher.  We couldn’t figure out why she was so upset.  All of a sudden out of nowhere a juvenile Bald Eagle appeared.  “Cirrus” continued to circle until she got close enough to dive at the intruder.  She chased the Eagle until she became a speck in the sky.  She was away for quite a while before returning to check on her home turf.

Carol from Rochester holding a Peregrine.  A “gang” from Rochester comes to our banding at the Sheraton as the adult female(Rhea Mae) on site is the daughter of  Rochester’s Kodak falcon the much loved Mariah. The ladies come to see her offsprings offspring banded.

An Amazing Opportunity

May 28, 2009 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Sue McCreadie Reports:

Bill and I were thrilled to be invited to the banding of the 4 chicks at the Toronto Sheraton Centre Hotel today.  Thank you Mark Nash for inviting us.  It was an amazing opportunity to see these little birds that will eventually take to the sky as high speed precision flying machines.  Attached are some photos taken at the event.

!!! Ch-ch-changes!

May 28, 2009 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

What a difference a day makes once again!  All three - can’t call them chicks anymore as they are looking more and more like young juvenile falcons, even our young lady!  Two days ago she was still quite white but today she has caught up with her brothers and except for her little white pantaloons she is looking very grown up.  Everyone that comes by the lobby to look at the live cam is surprised at the changes since yesterday.  They are quite beautiful I must say!

It’s very wet and foggy today so lunch must have been late but I did just witness 2 feedings…dad did the first one and little missy was quite impatient.  At one point, one of her brothers had a bit of food hanging out of his beak and she grabbed the other end and a little tug of war ensued!  As the short feeding ended, mom came right in with another snack and little Missy lined up right in front of Angel and got the lion’s share of that one!

Now they are just hanging out by the nest box staring out into the fog no doubt contemplating what is out there.

The Day After…

May 27, 2009 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

…banding!  Yesterday was an exciting day for our family - I won’t spill too many details and leave that to Mark Nash to post all the good stuff!  I can tell you we have 2 boys and 1 girl!!

I kind of knew I was wrong about them being all girls when I saw them Monday morning after the weekend and discovered to my shock 2 very darker than expected eyases and 1 still looking like she should..white with black on her.  I am thrilled however in this case to have guessed wrong !  Angel has a reputation for producing ‘big girls’ the past few years and maybe 1 boy thrown in for good measure the odd time so it’s a pleasant surprise to see two healthy sized males this year!

Our ‘little’ girl still topped out at 989 grams..just a bit bigger than Screech from last year if memory serves me right!  This morning I spotted the 2 boys by the nestbox looking none the worse for the wear sporting their new ‘bling’!  Mom was on top of the building standing guard no doubt in case the evil intruders tried to come back.  She defended her chicks quite vigorously yesterdayto say the least!  I did notice a defiant pride in her stance this morning at having successfully driven us off :)

Temporary delay with the new web camara image, stay tuned…..

May 26, 2009 - Mississauga - Executive Centre

Mark Nash Reports:

Well we are almost there.  We have had a software conflict on the new computer, but should have the problem corrected by tomorrow evening.  Marion and I are very pleased to report that upon are arrival late this afternoon, we were fortunate to arrive just at the right time to see the adult female arrive with food, and watched her feed her 3 new hatchlings.  During the course of our 2 hour visit, she actually brought in two fresh kills on two separate occasions and fed the young hatchlings.  We were very amazed once again that despite the rather cool temps and the blustery wind conditions that the the adult female did not spend any time during the two hour period actually brooding / covering the hatchlings.  This was a repeat scenario as the night before when we observed her not brooding / covering the three hatchlings for the entire three hours that we were on site working on the computer.  The hatchlings were huddled together when we arrived and at no time over the three hours did we observe the adult female brooding her young hatchlings.  While we have always been told that the young hatchlings can not regulate their own body temperature at this young age, we have  seen many young hatchlings not more than a week old being left for many hours at a time un-covered and on their own at at various nest sites over the years.   With the benefits of the nest cameras and close monitoring that they provide, we have documented and logged many years of data clearing demonstrating  that hatchlings at this age can stay warm (and have survived the test of time).  It has become quite obvious that the urban nesting conditions, - (with the covered nest boxes and protected nest ledges) provide a warmer claimant and sheltered environment from the elements for the young hatchlings.  Stay tuned, we should have the nest camera computer back up and running by tomorrow evening before dark!
