May 04, 2011 - Burlington - Lift Bridge
Sue McCreadie Reports:
Bill and I spent some time at the Lift Bridge this afternoon. Sir made a really quick circle of the area, landing in the nest box for about 10 seconds. They chirped to each other and then he landed on the Hamilton Hydro Tower. When I looked away, he had disappeared once again. We moved down the road to the washroom parking lot and with the scope we could see that Cirrus was in the next box, but appeared pretty restless. She was up and down, up and down. No little white heads were visible. It was pretty cool by the lake with a temperate reading of 4 degrees with a cold wind blowing. If there are little ones, Cirrus will be working very hard to keep them warm. Hopefully we will know something soon.

May 04, 2011 - Toronto - King Street
Linda Woods Reports:
I spent sometime this morning watching the King St monitor for any evidence of a hatch. No yet. Even with this beautiful sunny morning with the sun on the nest ledge, the female was not getting up off the eggs. In fact she was still ‘tightly folded”. ( with her wings tightly folded against her). She did move twice in which I was able to see intact eggs.
I’ll keep checking.

Mark Nash Reports:
May 3rd -2011
Actual hatch date of the first chick is May 1st!!
As we suspected, and now confirmed after a detailed look at the photos yesterday from Eileen & Edna of the single hatchling that they captured in their photos, it was obvious that the hatchling pictured was in fact older than a day old. The hatchling was photographed with it neck and head being held completely upright with mouth wide open. This is not a day old hatchling!!
Day old hatchlings are not able to hold their heads up in this position for any length of time!
As such, it is believed that the FIRST TORONTO HATCHLING was actually hatched on May 1st or May 2nd!
The crappy cold rainy blustery weather over the past week has had ALL of the resident females hunkered down tight on the nest trays and as such, has made any detailed observations very challenging.
Now, with the addition of Carol’s additional photos and observations of a second hatchling later in the same day, this would confirm our suspensions and support our conclusion that the first chick did in fact hatch a day or two earlier (May 1st or May 2nd).
A huge thanks to Carol for the photos, and Eileen for sending us Carol’s photos!
See attached photos.

Voltaire decided to go for 3 laps around the bridge to the Ambassador Bridge letters at top of bridge and than headed back into the nest. What a sight it is to see them flying.. Boy do i wish i new how many eggs Voltaire is laying on… But time will tell…

CPF Postmaster Reports:
A huge thank you to all that have e-mailed us with their photos, as there are some great shots indeed!!
The first two that I opened we will post as there are so far 629 e-mail with attachments, and so far all of them include photos of the new hatchling. Way to go folks!! We simply can’t keep up!
Thank you MUCH for sending us some of your photos and all of your support!! As most of you are aware, we are all out in the field trying to get cameras and internet service fixed and repaired, gathering nest site logistics and meeting with the various property managers at the various nest sites, and we’re always stressed and short of manpower and resources at the best times of the year! Very little time to see the camera’s, and without your support, we would usually miss all of the good stuff!!
A huge thank you to both
Eileen and Edna who beet everyone to the draw this morning by sending in their snapshots ahead of everyone. This tiny little fluff ball is FIRST PEREGRINE HATCHLING HERE IN ONTARIO CANADA FOR the 2011 season.
Congratulations to both Tiago and Rhea Mae, and of course their great foster parents, the Toronto Sheraton Centre hotel, their management team and all of the great staff at the Toronto Sheraton Hotel that have been so accommodating and supportive to both the CPF and the peregrines.

Kathy Reports:
It poured rain all day today and it was cold, a truly miserable day for bird watching if you’re not a bird!
My timing was off a seconds this morning - as I arrived Jack was climbing into the nestbox and Angel quickly flew over to the next condo. I saw feathers flying and assumed Jack had brought her breakfast so decided to cross the street to get a better view of her eating..well as soon as I’m in the middle of traffic she immediately flies back to the ledge and I missed her talons to see if there was food as I was keeping an eye on traffic.
She climbed into the nestbox with Jack…I waited for the usual departure but nope he stayed in the box with her. I thought okay something is up…I could clearly see both of them..his tail feathers as he was laying down and the top of her back. Waited another 5 minutes and still he did not depart. Most curious…but I was going to be late for work and it was wet and cold so in I went.
Two of us checked every 45 minutes to 1 hour alternating and Jack was on site every single time…Angel stayed hunkered inside the nestbox. When I left the office, I stood in the pouring rain for 25 minutes under my umbrella and Jack stood with me on his usual perch …sadly I gave in first and left.
So to conclude..I know something is happening up there but can’t say for certain yet . It’s expected to continue pouring all night and drying out for the morning. Hopefully I will get some more clues or something conclusive tomorrow. Rhae Mae started incubation about a day before our nest and she had a hatch first thing this morning so we should be on track for one today or tomorrow as well.

Kathy Reports:
Arrived on site at 7:15 in the midst of a flurry of pigeons flying for cover! Jack was clearing air space on the condo roofs and then Angel actually got off her eggs and joined him. I was a bit concerned as it was rainy and cool and wondered if perhaps we could have an overnight hatch ? After a few minutes Angel returned to the nestbox and I could see she was laying with her back high..another good sign.
Jack, however was not done. He patrolled every tower in the vicinity and chased off anything with wings. At one point he started dive bombing 3 Canada Geese who were 3 towers over!
Finally he settled on one of the back buildings to keep watch. It wasn’t until awhile later that I saw the window washer adjacent to the nestbox ledge that I realized that was what had them upset. It never occurred to me that there would be someone up on the roof in the rain. Sadly he still has the entire side of the building that is next to the ledge to complete so I expect more upset parents tomorrow. Let’s hope they can get the job done before eggs hatch in the next few days. When I left an hour ago Jack was still there keeping one eye on the building and ready to pounce.
