!!! Mt. Sinai, Behaviour change from Hunter

May 12, 2015 - Toronto - Mount Sinai Hospital

Linda Woods Reports:

Again today spent some time at Mt. Sinai Hospital peregrine site, as I have done so every day for the past few weeks. Today, a change in behaviour from Hunter. Usually I see a hand off of the 6th ledge and the adult finds a place to rest before heading out and out of view. Today, Hunter was unsettled. He would visit the 6th ledge and take off and sit on a nearby roof.  Minutes later he would return to the 6th ledge, walk to the back and come out again and take off. He would then sit for a few minutes and return to the 6th ledge. This is very encouraging and it would fit a time line of nesting behaviour. Perhaps a hatch is close if not already. Just have to wait for food to go in and stay in. As the weeks progress it is very encouraging to see that behaviour from both Seven and Hunter has been maintained. Unlike years past, they would get to a certain point of ‘incubation” and then both adults would be seen flying in the area and not returning to the chosen ledge.  Here’s hoping for a successful year for Hunter and his new mate Seven.

!!! Erin, Alive and well

May 12, 2015 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

Taken today around 1:20p.m.  Erin! Alive and well. One can clearly see her bands. She and Stormin have been spending a lot of their time on the west ledges of 18 King St. nest building.  I have another image of both Erin and Stormin together.  Great news. I couldn’t believe that Erin had passed away. It just wasn’t fitting the behaviour I was seeing from Stormin. He was hanging out and close to nest building. This is why, Erin was still with him.

Now to find out if there is actually an active nest on the west ledges. More observations are being done, when time allows

!!! Confirmed Hatch!

May 11, 2015 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Monday May 11th - 2015
A quick round of the web cams and it appears that everyone’s suspicions were correct, in that some time between Friday and Saturday, there was indeed a hatch out in Etobicoke! At least one egg has hatched, and via the photo evidence, three eggs remained unhatched as of this late afternoon.

Congratulations Etobicoke!!!

We Have a Hatch!!

May 11, 2015 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Tracy Simpson Reports:

As evidenced by the eggshell beside O’Connor it looks like the first chick has arrived!!!

We have 3 babies!!

May 10, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Cathy Kerr Reports:

Sorry for the slight delay in our wonderful news as it was a busy weekend!  Mark and I went up to check on Friday May 8 and found 3 babies hatched(no 4th egg in sight–perhaps the window washer was mistaken??).  Mark had a new camera to try out which we lowered down to the ledge.  Jenna was on it in a flash–left more than a few scratches on it lol!!  Chester came over to warn us right away, but left after just a few minutes to watch from the ICICI building(perhaps he knows us by now??!!).  Mark is still working out the kinks with this wonderful new toy–eventually he hopes to be able to show the videos here–lots to learn first.  Judging by the pics, Mark thinks the babies are approx. 3 days old(5 now) so birth date May 5th!

Could It Be We Might Get a Mother’s Day Hatch?

May 10, 2015 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Tracy Simpson Reports:

I have been watching the Islington and Bloor camera today as O’Connor and Lucky are coming close to a hatch.  This morning the adults are very restless and are not as flat out on the eggs as they have been up to this point.  We will have to keep an eye on the cam today as it looks like a hatch is close.

Another Amazing Update from Michigan!!! Mystique!!!

May 10, 2015 - London - TD Tower

Tracy Simpson Reports:

For the first time in her history in Michigan, Mystique has hatched a full clutch of chicks!!!!!

Mystique was hatched in London, Ontario in 2006 and banded along with her two siblings.  She made her first appearance in Detroit in 2008 near the Fisher building but was not nesting at that time.  She established herself in the territory by 2009 but still no nesting.  Since her arrival in Detroit she has laid several clutches of eggs that failed to hatch and has only hatched one chick so far…   …until now!!!  She has hatched at least three eggs with her mate who is still believed to be Horus from Akron, Ohio (same nest and parents as our O’Connor at Islington and Bloor).  Please enjoy this update from Barb Baldinger and Chris Becher from the Southeast Michigan peregrine monitoring team and the Michigan DNR as this news and their efforts make for one amazing story of our girl Mystique!

April 23rd Update

Last November, Chris Becher and Barb Baldinger installed a nest tray in one of the window wells at the Fisher Building that Mystique (black 20/W) and Horus (b/g 89/P) unsuccessfully attempted to use in the past. Today, we were happy to find Mystique incubating four eggs! This week, we also witnessed nest relief at AT&T in Pontiac, at UD Mercy in Detroit and at Parklane Tower in Dearborn. All good news!

May 6th Update

Update from the Fisher Building, Detroit: Chris Becher and Barb Baldinger were happy to see a pile of babies in the nest tray we installed last fall. Great news for Mystique and her mate! (Possibly still Horus, but not confirmed.)

More News From Michigan. Majesty Enjoying Her New Tray

May 10, 2015 - Toronto - King Street

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Thank you so much to Barb Baldinger and Chris Becher from Michigan for this update.  Majesty, daughter of Kingsley and Victoria, was hatched in 2002 at 18 King Street and along with her 4 siblings was rescued by the CPF when both resident adults were recovered deceased.  The famous 5 were then taken to our avian vet for re-hydration and health check before coming to the CPF Raptor Centre and being cared for until they were ready for hack release in Richmond Hill.  Of the 5 chicks, Majesty went on to nest in Flint, Michigan with Barry starting in 2006.  She has hatched several chicks over the years but has struggled due to her nest site choices and weather events causing the loss of clutches.  I am pleased to share this new update from the amazing Southeast Michigan team and thank Barb Baldinger for her photo of the new tray and Majesty.

Durant Building, Flint, MI - Today, Chris Becher and I observed Majesty (black 7/5) incubating 4 eggs on the new nest tray that the MNDR installed last June. Majesty and her mate, Barry (not yet confirmed this year) have nested at the Durant Building and across the street at the UM Northbank Center since 2006. Early in 2014, employees of the UM Northbank Center installed a traditional roofed nest box that the falcons did not like. Majesty laid her eggs on the ledge of the Durant Building and they fell to the street below. It’s nice to see the new nest tray is working!

Viper Hatches Two in Michigan

May 10, 2015 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Thank you to our friends in Michigan for this amazing update!  Viper, hatched at the Windsor Ambassador Bridge in 2012 to Freddie and Voltaire, has had two of her four eggs hatch so far at the Lansing Board of Water and Light Otto E. Eckert Power Station.  What makes this such a phenomenal event is the story leading up to it.

Viper arrived last spring at the power station along with several other females.  The resident female was displaced in a territorial battle, the victor was then fighting yet another new female and at the end of it all Viper came in and claimed the nest box for her own.  She nested last year with Eckert, the resident male, producing three eggs that after 45 days were candled and shown to be infertile.

Fast forward to January of this year.  Viper was reported missing and a new unbanded female had taken over the box.  The new girl and Eckert were getting on with courtship when Viper returned and a vicious nest box battle was video taped by their in box camera that ended with Viper and her rival talon locked and tumbling out of the box and down the face of the plant.  The monitors for the site were able to later confirm that Viper remained and was once again resident female of the plant.

Viper and Eckert laid four eggs this spring and folks have been watching with fingers crossed for fertile eggs this year.  Well Viper, you did it!  Two young ones have now hatched and we are so pleased to hear of her success.  Thank you to the Windsor Fledge Watch team who watched over her as a young one in 2012 and to our friends in Michigan that watch over her today!  Great news for Viper!!

Possible Hatch at Amexon

May 10, 2015 - Toronto - Don Mills and Eglinton - Amexon

Bruce Massey Reports:

Yesterday I went out for a site check as I know they are due for a hatch based on observations back at the end of March.  I arrived at around 7am and found a peregrine on the DeBeers sign.  I believe this was the male.  He flew to the ledge shortly after I arrived and landed for just a moment before taking off again.  A quick check it would appear.  He remained roosting on the “S” of DeBeers until just after 9am when he took off, circled over the ledge twice and landed on the ICICI building.  Just before 10am he took off again and this time returned to the ICICI building with food.  The female, Jenna, came off of the nest ledge, took the food from Chester and immediately returned to the nest ledge.  She disappeared into the back of the ledge at 9:57am with the food and came back into view at 10:06am with the remains of the meal.  She flew off and stashed it on the DeBeers building and then returned to the nest ledge.

Based on this observation I believe that the first hatch may have possibly arrived at Amexon yesterday, Saturday May 8th, and it was a first feeding that I witnessed.  I will be back for more observations soon.
