King St.

April 03, 2014 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

Thank-you Kathy for posting. I don’t think there is an egg as of yet. The nest bowl is towards the camera by the pillar. Erin is clearly seen lying down in the nest bowl, but there doesn’t appear to be egg(s) yet. Erin has been doing this behaviour for close to a week now without having an egg in the nest scrape.

I’ve also noticed that there is no clear hand off of the nest by Windwhistler. He comes to the ledge but does not take a turn the lying down anywhere behind the pillar. The image posted may be a “play of light “at the wall,  by the redbrick structure and the different colours of debris on the ledge.

We are all watching with anticipation for the first egg and welcome the first one to post the news.

Kathy Reports:

Thank you to Dutch Eagle Fan over at BCAW who just caught and enlarged this photo..we thought we had an egg but aftter consulting with resident expert Linda, we know it’s a trick of the light!  I think the falcons are playing Jedi mind games with us!

No eggs yet

April 03, 2014 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

Erin is behind the nesting pillar at 10:30 this morning. I captured a web cam image early this morning. A definite nest bowl can be seen, but no eggs as of yet. Windwhistler remains close by and is always in view when checking the area.

Yesterday a Blue Heron made it’s way through the area and caught the attention of both adults.  Many Turkey Vultures are also seen coming through the nest areas as well.

Fabulous Photos of Ely in Ohio; A King Street Offspring

March 11, 2014 - Toronto - King Street

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Chad and Chris assist the Ohio DNR in monitoring the nest sites in and around the area and are fabulous photographers to boot!!  This past weekend they visited the Cleveland Clinic to check in on Ely and Dipper, the adult resident pair, and took some incredible photos of our dear Ely.

Ely was hatched in 2008 at the 18 King Street East nest site to Erin and Windwhistler and has been doing great down in Ohio for several years now.  It is always great to know where our juveniles end up as adults and it is thanks to the banding efforts that we make.  Please enjoy these exquisite photos of Ely taken by Chad and Chris in Ohio!!

King Street Adults Feeling Spring

March 11, 2014 - Toronto - King Street

Tracy Simpson Reports:

I have been seeing both Erin and Windwhistler on camera regularly attending the nest ledge and working on the scrape behind the pillar.  Yesterday, Erin worked on the nest bowl for a good 10 minutes before deciding to take a break.  She is already practicing her position over the eggs and chicks as seen when posing for the camera on her tarsus.  We are looking forward to the first egg for our oldest pair in Ontario in the coming weeks!!  I have added photos of Erin from yesterday’s nest bowl excavation.

Spring Chit Chat at King Street

January 13, 2014 - Toronto - King Street

Tracy Simpson Reports:

This morning Erin and Windwhistler were discussing the upcoming spring season on camera.  It was great to see them both at the nest!  Erin stayed on the ledge for another hour or so soaking in the morning rays and preening while Windwhistler was out and about.

Sweet Moment at King Street Yesterday

January 08, 2014 - Toronto - King Street

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Yesterday afternoon while working away at the Raptor Centre, I took a break and tuned into the web cameras to see if I could catch sight of any adults in this -32 deep freeze.  On the King camera, I first found Erin sitting alone on the ledge and I was admiring her profile shot with a crop that could be seen from space.  In the very next frame, her lifetime mate Windwhistler appeared and the two sat together, chatted about the weather and preened the day away for a good long while.  With each image update, you could see that they were watching their territory together as their heads were moving in unison and looking at the same thing most of the time.  It was really adorable.

Usually catching the adults on camera in the non breeding season is quick and fleeting.  Most often it is one or the other adult visiting the ledge and not often do I catch both at the same time.  This seemed, in such cold temperatures, to be a bit of a special moment out of the wind on their ledge together.  Very sweet.

Erin and Windwhistler on Camera this Morning

January 05, 2014 - Toronto - King Street

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Over the past few days some of the resident adults have been seen briefly on camera inspecting their nest trays and roosting on the ledge.  This morning I was watching Windwhistler relaxing at King Street when all of a sudden Erin appeared on camera with him.  It was fantastic to see the pair and capture a few images of their time together.

Photo of Cosmina in Stoney Creek

September 04, 2013 - Toronto - King Street

Tracy Simpson Reports:

Here is the photo of Cosmina taken by Brandon Holden on Sept 2 in Stoney Creek.  Linda Woods and I talked a great deal about her “bottle blonde” head and this trend of light headed juveniles has been seen elsewhere this year.

Thank you Brandon for the great photo and the excellent sighting of Cosmina on her way!
