Friday June 27th - 2014
A quickly update from Dave who was out at the Scarborough nest site most of the afternoon checking on the three hatchlings, he reports a slow day for the most parts - likely given the heat and humidity. He observed only one food drop and feeding of the hatchlings on the nest ledge around 4pm, and then all of three chicks settled back down and disappeared back out of his view on the nest ledge.

I arrived much later after shortly after 7pm after doing some fledge watch time early this morning out at the William Osler fledge watch, meeting with Mark Heaton from the OMNR to band the young female fledglings that I had rescued two nights ago from the Rogers Centre nest site - (a big female they named “BJ” - (after the Blue Jays), and re-banding the young fledgling that Bruce Massey had rescued the night before from the Toronto Sheraton nest site.

I was successfully able to release the two peregrine fledglings back to their parents at the Rogers centre and the Toronto Sheraton Hotel earlier with the help of the Rogers centre staff and Linda from the downtown Toronto Sheraton fledge watch.

I must admit, everything at the Scarborough Yellow pages nest site was disturbingly quiet when I arrived!! Absolutely no one is my view, (no adults, and no chicks)!!

Just after 9pm, finally one of the adults finally flew in from the west and landed on the upper elevation of the building. Moments after, one of the chicks appeared on the outer leading edge of the nest ledge, flapped a few times, and as quickly as it appeared, it disappeared back into the nest ledge out of my view. Well, very uneventful indeed!!

By 9:30pm, darkness was moving in and no activity was observed. I closed the watch for the evening and was able to pick up Marion from the Kennedy subway station arriving from her fledge watch day at the Canada Square nest site at Yonge and Eglinton.
Wow, a very busy, very long day for all!
See you all tomorrow……..

Wow, its time!!!

CPF Postmaster Reports:

June 26th - 2014
I arrived on site around 1:00pm and was treated to a great time watching the young ones on the nest ledge. I watched one of the young at first exploring the ledge a bit and even spending some time on the edge. All 3 were visible during my 4 hours there with one being far more bold then its siblings. However when one of the parents brought back what looked to be a pigeon for dinner at 3:45 two of the three made there way to were the parent was and was feed with the third looking on but still a bit hesitant to come out that far. Then after food time was over two of the young ones started flapping there wing for a good while firmly on the ledge. Should be a great long weekend watching them learn there wings.

Dave

P.S. I have a couple more pics ill send in another email.

!!! Scarborough Yellow pages fledge watch to start Friday June 27th!

Well, its that time again, and we’re looking for your support to join us in Scarborough this weekend as the Scarborough Yellow pages fledge watch will begin.
Any and all of your assistance and support is most welcomed as we are still dealing the usual manpower shortages with five other fledge watches on the go.

We have two additional nest sites that we have been dealing with where we do not have the land owners permissions to go public with and further stressed with manpower resources to cover these two nest sites.

I was called last night during the rain storm to attend one of these nest site to rescue one of the four hatchlings that came our of the nest ledge and ended up in a bad situation. I was able to complete the rescue and will be taking the fledgling to OMNR this evening to be banded and then will return it back it its parents.

Hope to see you at the Scarborough Yellow pages nest site at Milner and Progress avenue this weekend, as we could really use your help.

Update

June 21, 2014 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Marion Nash Reports:

I spent a little over 2 hours at the Yellow Pages building today and saw both adults one was on the ledge were the nest is most of the time. The other one Spent time on the peak of the building and made several trips over to the “kitchen” and the building south of it although I did not see a hunt or any bringing of food to the nest ledge. I did not see any of the chicks while I was there but everything looks to be fine.

Watch should start mid to end next week.

Dave

!!! Finally, the Scarborough nest site banding photos!

June 11, 2014 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Mark Nash Reports:

Well, its been an aggressive banding season with 14 nest sites here in southern Ontario that were successfully banded this season and we’re finally completed the bandings that we’re going to get this year. With bandings in Windsor to Stoney Creek, Mississauga, Toronto, Etobicoke, Scarborough, Burlington and Kitchener, this has been a very successful banding year!!

With only a few missed due to scheduling challenges and the very short window of opportunity based on the hatchlings age to actually band them, we did our best to get as many as possible given the time frames available.

So finally, with more than 1600 photos to edit, colour correct and downsize, we finally have the Scarborough banding photos ready to post.
Enjoy……………..

!!! Scarborough Milner Nest site - Hatch Confirmed!!

May 20, 2014 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Mark Nash Reports:

May 20th - 2014
Great news today as my visit was well timed! Two hatchlings confirmed at the Yellow pages & Petra nest site on Milner Ave., in Scarborough.
Sadly, due to the rain, and knowing that Linn would be very aggressive, I only brought my camera phone with me expecting that my visit wold be very short, so the photos are not the best. (Although, the purpose of our visit is not for a photo shoot, but to document and confirm a hatch so that banding can be arranged with the MNR and building management and the site can be managed appropriately).

Both Rueben and Linn were on site and strongly suggested that I not hang around, which I was more than happy to oblige them.
Stay tuned for more updates………

!!! Still not hatch, but its getting very close!

May 16, 2014 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Mark Nash Reports:

Friday May 16th - 2014
I finally got a chance to get back to the Scarborough nest site today on Milner to check up on Rueben and Linn’s progress and the status on their four eggs. Upon our arrival, Rueben was observed on the nest ledge flashing and Linn was nowhere to found, (at least when we first arrived)! I was able to see three eggs on the nest ledge. After a few quick photos of Rueben to confirm his identity via his leg band numbers, we made our way down the isle way to the exit door, and we then met Linn.

Out of know where, Linn appeared, and I can tell you that she was not exactly happy to see us. She was quickly joined by Rueben where they roosted briefly on a small communications in front of us allowing me an opportunity and then asked us to leave. Well, Ok, they encouraged us to leave, and leave quickly we did.

In a matter of seconds, we were stopped and dived upon more that half dozen times by both adults and pretty glad that we were able to exit as soon as we did. After reviewing some of the photos later in the evening, I was able to re-confirm via her leg band numbers that Linn is still the resident adult female on site.
Finger crossed, they will have a hatch in a few days.
Stay tuned…………….

!!! Looks like Lyn & Ruben defended the territory today.

May 12, 2014 - Scarborough - Yellow Pages

Marion Nash Reports:

At 3:30 this afternoon I got a call from Mr Brian Maltman who has an office at 10 Milner Business Court. Brian said he had some bad news for me and that a Peregrine Falcon hit his 7th floor office window very hard and that although he had gone down to see if the bird was alive and might need help he found the bird had died likely on impact.

Well fearing that it was Lyn or Ruben I asked Brian to pick up the poor bird and hold him/her until I can get someone to come out to retrieve it and he said no problem he would do that for us.

I called Kathy Smith to go out to pick up the bird and she went out right away. She brought the bird to me and we knew right away that not only was it a Canadian produced bird but it was a yearling or sub-adult.

I took a look at the banding records from last year and found that it was Hurricane Hazel who was hatched at the Mississauga Holcim Cement Plant last year.

The poor bird came home from his winter migration to eventually find himself in the wrong place at the wrong time and paid for his mistake.

It’s always sad when we loose one and I can’t absolutely confirm that Lyn & Ruben had anything to do with it but if I was a gambler I would put my money on that for sure.

This is nature and we have to except the good and bad this is why it’s called wild life just think of all those who have survived with the help of their human friends and calibrate in the knowledge that there are Peregrine Falcons at all!

Keep watching as the 2014 hatchlings will if all goes well be here soon and the banding of the chicks at Holcim and Milner is coming up.

A big thank you to Brian for keeping an eye on the falcons and for calling us so quickly.

Marion
