On May 21, Kellie reported: “This morning at approx. 9:30 a.m., Papa came in with a food package, Mama Mystery came and grabbed it from him, and she fed the chicks. As an aside: One is quite “grabby” already - practicing “kill” mode. The chicks were mostly on their own this morning, as they seemed hot (we had warm overnight temps). Papa did come back after the feeding was over to give the chicks a little look, presumably.

Later, during the peak of the storm that hit around 12:00 p.m., I checked in on the cam and Mama was brooding the young. She stayed with them for a while until the weather had settled down.”

David reported at 4:53 on May 23: “Dinner just arrived a couple of minutes ago, kids being fed! I think the prey might have been a pigeon or dove, or possibly a bit smaller. I got a half-decent view, but only for a split second. The parent left just after 5:00 p.m. For a bit the parent seemed to be preferring one of the chicks. At first I thought it was the smaller one, but watching now I think it was the larger one. The other still managed to get in there though.”

At 8:20 p.m. on May 24 Karen reported one of the adults was feeding the babies. “Both seemed to be eating at the time. The adult left shortly after but I watched for a few more moments and you could certainly see that both crops on the young were full.”

2021’s Discovery is in Michigan!

April 24, 2022 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Cathy Kerr Reports:
Kitchener news: Discovery,  banded Z/53, 2021,is in Warren,  Michigan! They have a nest there, unfortunately their resident female Siri(sister of Darcy, Bloor/Islington) disappeared over a week ago, leaving eggs. Her mate Brock tried but eventually the eggs were removed. Then little Discovery discovered this nice spot. She’s a bit young but…Brock was not receptive at first but seemed to be warming up, when another adult showed up! Such drama. So there’s a bit of a battle going on- who knows who will stay. This is the way of peregrines though.  Here is the link if you want to check out their fb and live stream:

Hope it works out for Discovery!
Thanks to Kathy Majich for letting us know!

!!! April 10 - 4 eggs at CTV!!!

April 10, 2022 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Lisa Reh Reports:

Checking the footage at the CTV Bell Media nest site today, it looks like there are now 4 eggs in the nest box!!!

CTV Kitchener Falcon Watch: April 10, 2022 | CTV News

Earlier, Kellie reported: “At 11:05, myself, my Mom, Annarita and her husband, Fred went to see the Peregrines. On arrival, it was fairly quiet. A few minutes later, we could hear a falcon calling, but could not spot it. Fred finally spotted an adult perched on a corner of the Grand River Hospital. It’s not a perch I’ve seen them use in past years, but perhaps a bit more protected from the wind.

A few Turkey Vultures were getting increasingly closer to the nest tower on their flybys, until one got too close. The adult on the hospital rocketed off their perch and caught up with the TV to escort it out of the area. In flight, it was easier to tell it was the male.

We noticed a few pigeons gathering around the apartment building balconies (King’s Tower) and the chimney of the shorter brown brick building behind the parking area. A few minutes later, the male flew into the nest box and switched off with the female, who looked especially monstrous compared to the male due to fluffiness (it was a cold and windy morning). She shot off of the ‘porch’ of the nestbox and then went barrelling through the flock of 8 pigeons (two pigeons smartly didn’t take flight). We lost the female behind the building after the pigeons scattered.

Overall, quite a lot of action for no babies yet and only a half hour or so of watching!!”

!!! 3 eggs at the CTV Bell Tower Kitchener!!!

April 06, 2022 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Protecting their territory

April 05, 2022 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Lisa Reh Reports:

At 3:05, a turkey vulture flew close by the nest box and one bird came out and sat on the ledge while the other took off from the back side of the tower. It came back a while later and flew around and landed in the box briefly then took off again to parts unknown.

!!! Getting lucky?

April 02, 2022 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Lisa Reh Reports:

On April 2, Rudy was at the CTV site at 2:00 and both flew into the box shortly after. Lucky Rudy witnessed some peregrine “activity”. According to CTV there are no eggs yet but perhaps they are on the way now! Sandye drove by around 5 p.m. and there was one bird on top of the box. Based on timing and because there have not been any witnesses to interaction with 3 or 4 birds, likely, these are the same pair that have been sighted at both hospitals.

April 3

At 11:25 a.m. Karen checked the St Mary’s site but no birds were to be seen. She drove to CTV and eventually found one prepping food on the top level. After about 10 minutes it took off with a package, flew around and eventually headed to the nesting box while the other bird was inside. The package was shared and the one from inside took off with a piece and went to one of the microwave antennas and had a meal. The other stayed by the box for a while and ate too. Eventually it took off to challenge a red tailed hawk. When Karen left both birds were on the tower. Neither bird had visible leg bands.

Later on in the afternoon, Ralph saw two peregrines flying around St Mary’s hospital at about 1:45. They then headed towards Victoria Park.

Which site?

April 01, 2022 - Kitchener - CTV-Bell Media Tower

Lisa Reh Reports:

Amy confirmed one peregrine was at CTV this morning on the smaller tower. A little later on, she reported that there are 2! Both were actively hunting and then landed on the tower at CTV.

Karen and Sandye also reported seeing one poking its head out from the corner of the nest box this morning.

Wendy, Katharine and Jamie reported: Three of us were just there using a scope. Two peregrines were seen. One definitely has no leg bands and sat on the railing during the approximately 30 minutes we were there. The other flew to the nesting box.

On April 1, Ralph reported seeing 2 peregrines back at St. Mary’s hospital. At noon Rudy was at the CTV site and saw 2 peregrines in the nest box. One was standing guard on the edge of the box and the other was head bobbing inside. One was still reported at CTV at 12:40 by Karen.
