MEC Watch Getting a Little Wild; One Good, One Missing, One Treed

June 11, 2015 - Mississauga - Executive Centre

Tracy Simpson Reports:

When Bruce arrived on site today he had two of the girls on the roof of MEC 3 and our third girl was not showing herself.  He did a perimeter check of the four buildings but there was no sign of our missing girl believed to be Ieva.  This was in a sense a good thing as this could mean that she was at an elevation just out of sight.  Bruce set up to watch MEC 3 where the two girls, Hawkeye and Adrianna, were perched and preening.  He could also see Midnight on the window wells on the north side of MEC 1.  He waited to see if Ieva might pop up out of the window wells or whether the parents made an effort to tease out Ieva from her hiding place but no luck.  He went for another perimeter check once the two girls at 3 had settled again and this time found Ieva on top of a roof on the edge of the townhouse complex to the east of the MEC buildings.  She took off and headed towards MEC 1 and he lost sight of her but knew that she was low.  In the meantime, the two on MEC 3 were becoming active and a second bird now took flight.  This time it was Hawkeye who attempted to gain the nest ledge but fell short by several stories and flew back over by MEC 4.  She ended up in a tree on the west side of MEC 4 about 25 feet up and although uncomfortable she made no move to leave.  Winston arrived and helped to search for Ieva who they believed may be in the valley trees between MEC 1 and MEC 3.  They were unable to find her and their light was getting quite low.  They continued to monitor Hawkeye in the tree at 4 and this was the perfect time for Adrianna to take off of the roof of MEC 3 undetected!  They located her on a window well just to the north of the nest ledge and it would seem that this young lady is now well on her way.  One good, two to go.

Bruce and Winston closed off the watch with Adrianna on the nest building window well, Hawkeye in a tree at MEC 4 and Ieva in a location unknown.  I am hoping to be down at first light for as long as I can before going to work and Bruce will be coming down shortly after dawn as well to continue the search for Ieva and monitor our treed Hawkeye.  The Year of the Tree I guess.
