A big thank you to Hugh Sturdy for sending in his great shot of a very confused young Red-tailed hawk, after trying repeatedly trying to chase off the big bad Great horned owl that was roosting on a balcony, and failing to impress the owl! :-)

Hello/To Whom It May Concern - Peregrine Foundation
I live down town in a complex of buildings called City Park at Church and Alexander (Near Loblaws Maple Leaf Gardens) . Over the past few weeks I’ve observed a pair of what I believe to be falcons, swooping down and flying around the buildings here. A few times one has landed on the railing of a neighbouring building. They are incredible to watch as they fly around the area.

I have attached a photo I took recently (and posted to The Weather Network web site) It’s a funny shot because there is a fake owl on the railing to scare away pigeons and this falcon is sitting just a couple feet away from it staring at it. I also took video of one flying past.

I just thought maybe you might like to know about this pair in case you had not been aware.

Thank you.
Kind regards,
Hugh Sturdy

!!! False Alarm, no egg(s) as yet,,,, BUT IT’S GETTING CLOSE!!

March 06, 2015 - Toronto - King Street

CPF Postmaster Reports:

A quick visit at the 18 Toronto King Street nest ledge via the live CPF web camera, and it is obvious that there is not any eggs as yet. A blow-up view of the recent day light photos tells the story. While it appears that there maybe a little debris (maybe snow) in the nest bowl on the nest ledge behind the pillar, a close-up view of the photo taken this afternoon, clearly shows that there is no eggs present as yet.
Remember, that peregrine eggs are NOT white, but brownish-red blotched in colour.

But is getting very close to egg production and egg laying!!!
Stay tuned……………..

!!! Scarborough resident peregrines are very active indeed!!

A huge thank you to Alex and Kurt for sending in these photos of the Yellow Pages peregrines.

Alex writes:
Despite the frigid weather seems life continues as normal. Beefing up for this year’s Spring Fling; new eggs and long incubation. These photos were taken by my co-worker Kurt, at about 8.30am this morning in the parking lot, south west of the Yellow pages building. Unlucky seagull

!!! Sad news to report from Hamilton. Surge has died…

March 08, 2015 - Hamilton - Sheraton Hotel

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Thursday, March 5, 2015
We must apologize for all of the late postings and update’s as there has been so much to report and post over the past ten days, we have been a little backlogged trying to get everything posted.

It is with great sadness that we must report that Surge has died. As you may recall, back on January 24th, Surge was retrieved from the ground near the HMCS Haida in Hamilton after suffering from injuries consistent with those similar to fighting with another raptor, in addition to a cere and upper mandible injury consistent with that of a collision with a much harder object - (likely occurring as he made contact with the ground).

Surge was transported by the Hamilton Animal control to the Owl foundation for care and up until a few days ago was doing very well indeed. He was recently taken to the OVC, (the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph) for an examination and assessment with regards to a new complication that developed and unfortunately died the following day at OVC during a physical examination.

It has not been determined as yet as to the cause of his death.

Mean while, back at the Hamilton Sheraton nest site, the unidentified male peregrine that has been hanging around the Hamilton Sheraton nest site is still being observed on a very regular basis, although Madam X has still not given him mate liberty status as yet, but its only a matter of time now with spring in the air, longer daylight hours, increased photocell and elevated hormone levels, we expect that she will give in and accept him as a mate. (This is of course if he stays, and comes up with all of the right moves)!

Stay tuned………….

!!! Just maybe…… we may have the seasons first egg(s)????

A big thank you to Laura for sending in her cam snap-shot of the 18 King Street nest ledge via the live CPF web camera. It might appear that one of the adult peregrines is involved in incubation activities on the nest ledge?????

We’ll have to wait for her to stand up and give us a peak at what’s going on!
Stay tuned……………..
