CPF Postmaster Reports:
Friday March 13th - 2015
I had an opportunity to get down to the old OPG Hearn plant on Unwin Ave this evening on my way home to check on the status of the resident Hearn peregrines, and was delighted to see at one of resident peregrine falcons on site, overlooking its domain. Actually, the adult colored peregrine was perched high up on the smoke stack, roosting on the top of the west facing white strobe light , 3/4 the way up the smoke stack.
I watched the peregrine roosting on the strobe light for approx.40 minutes after my arrival, and then watched it make an incredible dive and stoop on a large black coloured bird close to the base of the smoke stack. The peregrine dove and stooped down so fast that I couldn’t even follow it with my bare eyes, and it was only after the explosion of feathers when it hit the smaller bird, did I realize that it had come that close to the base of the smoke stack and the ground level!!. Moments later, it re-appeared back in my view against the lighter blue sky with a kill in its clutches and I watched the peregrine utilize the air movements to gain altitude as it snaked back and forth around the west side of the smoke stack finally ascending to the highest upper most white blinking strobe light (almost at the very top of the large smoke stack on the south side), where it finally landed and eventually chowed down to eat its prize!
What an incredible display of determined, focused talent!!
I finally departed at dusk when the light simply disappeared making it too difficult to see much of anything. As a foot note, I have long since forgotten just how dark it gets down there, given the lack of street lights and other ambient light that would normally come from other hi-rise buildings.
Sadly, I didn’t have my camera this go-round, but I promise that I won’t forget it next time!!!
Stay tuned,,,,,,

Just dropping a line to let you know that Quest and Skye are very romantic today (mating observed twice today). The chipchipchip sounds alert me when they are nearby. They have been very vocal this week especially around 5:30pm, when it looks like Quest is getting room service at dinner time
Both spending time in the nest box as well. From my binocs it looks like house cleaning being done.
I read Cathy’s news that Skye is back (after observations on the CPF website reported a younger male hanging around in the winter) ? Nice to see Skye back!

Thanks to Charles Gregory from Hamilton Falconwatch who provided us with this very clear photo of Ossie’s black band, Tracy from the CPF was able to confirm it is indeed Ossie. He was hatched in 2012 at our William Osler Etobicoke site and banded O / 8 by Mark Heaton of the MNR, using a rare three character band.

Kathy Reports:
The Hamilton Falconwatch Team has tentatively ID’d the new tiercel hanging around Madame X. With Tracy Simpson’s help they were able to match a O/8 to a young 2012 bird banded at William Osler in Etobicoke.
Hamilton, say hello to Ossie! Based upon a slightly blurry look at leg bands this afternoon, we have tentatively identified the new male at the Hamilton nest as a bird that was banded in 2012 at the William Osler Hospital in Etobicoke. His parents were Hurricane (male) and Chessie (female). This is “tentative” until we can get a clearer look at the bands, to be sure that the upper character is the letter “O” and not the number “0″ (or something else), as it is the former that identifies him as Ossie. So for now, that’s what we’ll be calling him. Welcome to Hamilton, Ossie!

The photo in yesterday’s post showing a falcon in flight is actually of Freddie, rather than Voltaire. The other shots are of Voltaire on the Ambassador Bridge.
