June 21, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton
Tracy Simpson Reports:
Still one more fledge to go. Solar proved his metal and stuck to the level below the nest like glue today. Haven did not try and encourage him off.
I arrived at 8:45 and Stormin was high up on Rio-Can. Shortly thereafter Haven flew in from the south and landed on the antenna on top of Canada Square. Young Solar was still on the level below the nest.
Stormin flew from his perch and I was not sure where he went. There were pigeons scattered from their perches in the old bus bay area especially on the wall where black building meets concrete. There are a number of nooks and crannies and I think pigeons make their nests there. Anyway I saw Haven go for a pigeon but she came up without anything. I don’t know whether Stormin caught a pigeon or took a squab off the ledge but whatever he had he fed Solar on the lower ledge. While he was thus engaged Haven had flown to the same spot as yesterday, where wall meets higher wall on the black building, fourth floor level, and trotted towards *herself* reflected in the wall. Just the same as she had yesterday she pushed her face against the wall, then she stepped back and looked, put her head down and had another look then took off. The peregrine looking back at her was not to her liking.
Stormin spent a lot of time in the area today and I wonder if it was because his *first hatched* was having some *downtime* at home.
Simcoe, our *high flyer* had a lovely long flight. He started off from way over Heart and Stroke and flew west and back to the condos across Yonge Street. He circled high above Canada Square, east of H & S, north up Yonge and was gone. A little later he re-appeared and landed on the balcony wall below the nest, under the railing!
Stormin fed Solar again, whilst Haven was on the old nest ledge, and flew off. An hour after that feeding Haven flew from the old ledge and Simcoe and Solar remained on their spots. Simcoe wandered up and down the balcony wall under the railing. He looked up and looked down. He flew off and re-appeared on the level below this year’s nest. Solar looked pleased to see him but went down for a nap. Simcoe was a real fidget. He just could not settle and fifteen minutes later he was gone. A few minutes later our *high flyer* was flying high over H & S and Canada Square. He made several circles up there before Haven found him and dived on him. She then led him between the H&S and RC buildings and she came out alone.
Marion spotted people on the black building roof. They looked as if they may have been deciding where or how to clean the windows. They soon disappeared. Whilst they were up there Have was sitting on one of the ledges on the narrow *slit* windows at the top of the solid concrete wall before circling Canada Square.
Simcoe returned to the level below the nest and Stormin buzzed both babies. Stormin settled on the roof. He was restless though and flew to the top of the wall third from the nest. Then he hopped to the second wall. After a minute of two he rubbed his face on the edge and then hopped down onto the actual ledge next door to the youngsters. About twenty minutes later one of the adults buzzed the babies and both ducked.
Later, Haven came off the black building somewhere headed north west-ish over 53 Division and appeared to frighten off a low flying bird, maybe a juvie red-tailed hawk, not sure. Whatever it was it left. Haven did a lot of flying in the next hour or so. Marion was near the Yonge/Eglinton intersection and saw a *head* peek out from one of the ledges. The *head* appeared and disappeared several times. So I said I would trot over and see who it was if possible. Unfortunately I did not see the bird and that corner was WINDY!!! It may have been Brisk, whom we had not seen thus far!! Anyway on my return Marion pointed out Brisk on the antenna on top of 2180 Yonge Street. Then we saw Haven, as she *buzzed* him. He left the antenna and flew onto the top of a pole in the same area and Haven buzzed him again. He fluttered off the top of the pole but went back and she buzzed him again. I think she wanted him airborne!
Later on Simcoe was flying again and Haven flew with him.
Stormin had more food and flew past the nest level and I can’t remember if he dropped in or not. I think not. He then flew to 218i0 Yonge and landed on the side of the highest point of that building. Stormin returned to the nest ledge but misjudged everything, his altitude, the distance from the ledge, possibly even his speed and he crashed into it and fluttered to the level below.
Solar had been sleeping in the corner in which Stormin crashed so that must have been a bit of a shock for him.
Tracy called to warn us about the storm coming our way so we packed our gear but hung around. It appeared to pass over but later on we saw ominous signs in the sky, roiling clouds, dark and stormy. Marion had charged over to the mall for a coffee to sustain her and we were simply going to trot into 53 Division for the duration and hope she got back before the rain. However we decided to go to the mall as well and we met her there. Rain it did! Buckets of it. Eventually Marion decided to go home and Maggie and I continued talking. It was soon time for Maggie to leave and I walked to the exit with her and decided to check on the peregrines. We reached 53 Division and *our wall* when Maggie pointed out *someone with binoculars* looking at our birds. I recognised Caroline who had come to check on them. We had a few minutes together before it began to rain again and we all went our separate ways. We left Haven on the antenna on top of 2180 Yonge, Stormin on one of the cross pieces nearby and Simcoe and Solar on the level below the nest!

Hello
We had another visit today from Euro. The whole office is watching out for him now and we have been sharing pictures. (Our company is called Environmental Resources Management and we are all interested in the falcon family by our very nature!).
Euro came and sat on the same ledge today from around 9:45 - 10:30am or so. He walked around a bit and then hung out in the shade giving himself quite a preening session - he was nice and fluffed up at the end!
Prettier pictures of him attached!

June 21st - 2012Hello!!
I hope you don’t mind mulitple reports. We had multiple visits today - two from Euro, and one from Olympia. Olympia came by around 9:00am and stayed till about 9:45am. She was quite noisy and eeeeeeeet eeeeeeeeeet eeeeeeeet’d a lot. She ultimately stretched her wings and flew away.
Euro came by about 15 - 20 minutes later. He stayed for about an hour, walking back and forth on the ledge, then napping a bit, and hanging out in the shade. We all enjoyed working and watching him.
Euro came back a bit later - around 11am. He looked very hot and was breathing heavily with his beak open. He stayed next to the window in the shade. We are not sure if he brought it with him, or mom dropped it off, but a bit later he was eating a pigeon wing. He flew off about 10 minutes later, having stayed about a half hour.
We have seen all 3 of them zooming around practicing flying, sometimes landing above us on the roof of the west tower.

June 21st - 2012
We have some encouraging news to report in that we have received an update on the status of the resident adult female from the Hearn nest site. While the swelling in her wrist is still causing her some discomfort (and the need for ongoing treatment of both muscle relaxants and pain killers) she is doing well. The much better news is that x-rays showed that there are no evidence of any breaks or fractures in her wing wrist where the swelling is located.
All of our fingers are crossed that she makes a speedy recovery and can soon be released back to both her hatchlings her mate and who continues to struggle to provide food for their three hatchings.
Stay tuned………….

As the dawn to dusk watch continues, one of the three hatchlings - (a male) has taken it first flight and was able to hold enough altitude to stay off the ground!
While the first young fledgling lost a great deal of altitude and has not been able to get back to the nest ledge itself as yet, it has managed to stay off the ground and is slowly working its way back to the nest ledge area utilizing the various beams and parts of the superstructure.
Given the amount of land bases predators and other carnivores that we’ve observed hunting on the property from raccoons, skunks, coyotes, possums and the other avian predators including Red-tail hawks and Great Horned owls, it good that it hasn’t ended up on the ground.
The resident adult male did eventually find the fledgling and has been feeding it as best he can.
Sadly, it appears the resident adult male is only bringing in very small birds and is definitely challenged to supply enough food for the three young hatchlings. The oppressive heat and humidity that we’re been experiencing has also hampered his efforts to successfully hunt.
Foot note:
Now that one of the hatchlings has fledged and the other two remaining hatchlings are still at the nest ledge, it has been much easier to identify the sex of the three birds.
I can now say with all confidence that the first to fledge is a small male and the other two left in the nest are one male and one female.
The first to fledge has been named “Tiny” given his much smaller size in comparison to his other two siblings. Now that I can see the remaining two side by side, it has become quite obvious that there is one female hatchling and two males this year at the Hearn nest site.
Stay tuned….

We are delighted to report that a very healthy young male peregrine hatchling was successfully weighed, sexed and banded this morning at the Kitchener Sun Life Centre and returned to its parents without incident.
With a huge thank you to Ann from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources for banding support and the great folks from Sun Life and Bentall Kennedy Property management for hosting the event, everything went as planned.
While the resident adults have not yet been identified, efforts will be made to confirm the identity of the adults via their band numbers.

We have some great news to report! Ann has just called with some good news!! Not only can we now confirm that Kitchener has a territorial pair of peregrines, but that have set up house on the Sun Life centre on King Street and are in fact currently brooding a new hatchling!! Congratulations Kitchener and Sun Life!
Banding has been scheduled for June 21st., and Rudy Kruppa from the CPF will be on hand to do the meet and greet on behalf of the CPF in my absence.
As many of might recall, Rudy is a long standing volunteer with the CPF and was instrumental in both setting up, organizing and coordinating the Canadian Peregrine Foundation hack releases at Kitchener City hall for three years back in 2001, 2002, and 2003. Rudy was the CPF’s hack site coordinator during this time and works for the City of Kitchener at the Kitchener City hall just down the street from the Sun Life centre.
Some of you will know Rudy as he has been with us at the Toronto Sportsmen’s show each year at the CPF’s birds of prey booth for the past six plus years.

Sorry for the delay in getting all of the new nest pages up, as our web master has been in the out of the country in the USA for the past several weeks and he has been back logged.
After many years of on-again, off-again sightings of territorial peregrine activity in Kitchener, (including that of Dundas the peregrine with only one leg who spent some time in Kitchner with an unidentified female partner at the Royal Bank building, we have received information that there may be yet another nesting pair in Kitchener, this time on the Sun Life Centre.
Speaking with Anne Yagi this afternoon after the Niagara falls banding, we were alerted that there may in fact be of a nesting pair or peregrines at the King Street location of the Sun Life building..
Stay tuned for more information………..

Absolutely no sightings of Peregrines at the courthouse so far in June. On the Hurontario side, just above last year’s nest ledge, I saw pigeons there a few weeks back! I can’t remember seeing pigeons hanging out there ever before. Also no body parts of other birds on the ground to suggest peregrine activity.

Mark Nash Reports:
June 21st - 2012
Another hot humid scorching day that had all of the hatchlings pretty sedate for most of all day.
With not allot of flapping going on at all throughout the day, the remaining two unfledged hatchlings were pretty quiet, this despite the fact that they should being taking their first flights today given their age and from what I’m seeing.
Little Panagiotis, the first to fledge yesterday, stayed tight to the same upper ledges that I released him on last night and although he has been somewhat active throughout the day running around on the upper ledges, he’s not been doing much flapping at all.
This evening we had thunder storms, lightning, high winds along with torrential rain and incredibly, the humidity simply blew away,,, - (thank goodness)!!! Back to some seasonal weather tomorrow we’re told and officially, the second day of summer.
The fledge watch was closed down early, as it continued to rain with heavy downpours and high winds well into the darkness. The hatchlings were soaked to their down by the time I left for the evening.
No photos today.
Stay tuned………
