Lara In Ohio

April 03, 2012 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Frank Butson Reports:

Lara was one of four females hatched at the Etobicoke Sun Life nest site in 2006 to Angel and Marco.  She is continuing to be seen at the I-80 Turnpike Bridge in Cleveland, Ohio with her mate Rocky. They are being well monitored so there should be plenty of news this season. To date Lara and Rocky have had 10 young over 3 seasons.  Thanks to Chad and Chris for these recent photos of Lara.

DotCa In Rochester

April 02, 2012 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Frank Butson Reports:

A real-life drama has been going on for the past several months in Rochester NY, right in downtown Rochester. As many may know by postings, CPF has a strong relationship with The Rochester Gang, so we have been following their winter and spring challanges. Over the winter they learned of the deaths of 2 of the offspring from their site. It began with  news that Callidora a 2005 Rochester chick, passed in Pennsylvania.  With in days Sabrina/Valiant the resident male at the Prescott Ogdensburg Bridge, hatched in 2006 in Rochester being found injured in East Aurora NY and eventually succumbing to his injuries.

On the heels of those losses Beauty the resident female in Rochester was injured in a fight with Unity. Beauty has made a great recovery and will be released soon, complicating things.

A week ago,Archer, hatched in 2006 at the ADM Mills nestsite in Port Colbourne, the resident male in Rochester, was injured. The Rochester gang have been keeping a keen eye out for/on Archer for a week, showing just how dedicated they are to “their falcons”. We are following this situation closely. Today, a new male was seen in the nestbox with Unity and her egg. We can confirm with photos that the male being seen in the nestbox with Unity and her egg wears a black over black band, white 13 over white Y (13/Y). This new male is DotCa from the Etobicoke Sunlife Centre, hatched in 2010. DotCa has been seen mating with Unity also. We will keep you up to date as to what happens from here out.

Thanks to Kathy M and Terka for the photos they captured from the Rochester Falcon camera.

!!! Jack & The Crane

April 02, 2012 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

Things are quiet here and I’ve been seeing shift changes a few times a day if I’m lucky to be down there at the right time.  Interestingly they are using one of the other towers for food stashing and meals now, as opposed to the corner of the building adjacent to the nest ledge as they did in past years.  Which means they can’t see each other when one is there eating so they call to each other quite a bit now.  I’m assuming it’s to let the other know they are still there.

Last week one of the buildings across the street had some heavy duty air conditioners installed on their roof.  As that array of building is only 2 stories high, it normally wouldn’t concern our falcons at all however the crane they used sure had Jack’s attention.

It was interesting to watch his reaction as this big piece of metal suddenly stood up and was as high as the building they nest on.  He was mesmerized by it, watching it go up and down and sometimes he’d be in a crouched position, ready for take off to do battle if he had to and then it would go back down and his posture would relax.  He was twisting and turning his head trying to figure out what that intruder was!

This morning both Jack and Angel are on site and I was treated to a short game of tag and a bit of cooperative flying.  Angel was in her nest box, I could see her head peeking out and Jack decided he wanted to play.  So he started doing touch and goes at the ledge and chupping to her to entice her out for some fun.  She seemed happy to oblige and they flew around the buildings and in front of the nest ledge playing tag and chupping happily.  It only lasted a few minutes and then she retreated back to her nest and her eggs - the ones I assume are there!

!!! She’s hunkered down!!!!

April 02, 2012 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:

Saturday we were at the Bridge for only 45 minutes, Voltaire was in the nest tray and Freddie was on the Church Steeple then flew down to the nest ledge and then on to a beam. Both of them were very quiet.
Yesterday, we were there for two hours patiently waiting for some activity. We could see Voltaire hunkered down in the nest tray. An hour later Freddie flew in on a beam with food, feathers were flying like crazy, he then stashed some away and ate some, then began preening himself. Then he flew over to the nest ledge, Voltaire quickly flew over to where the food was while Freddie got into the nest box and hunkered down himself. We’re hoping they have eggs, as soon as we get confirmation we will do a report. If you know of anyone that would like to volunteer to watch these wonderful creatures please send us an email to wpfw2012@gmail.com

Assumed incubation continues

April 01, 2012 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

Frequent  checks on the King St site and only seeing one adult at a time. Although how many eggs has not been confirmed, seeing only one adult at a time indicates they must be incubation. The damp, drizzly weather today has both out of sight when I dropped by today.
