June 07, 2010 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge
Dennis Patrick Reports:
Wow, only in our dreams could we see a wonderful little family of Peregrine Falcons such as we have now on the Ambassador Bridge here in Windsor. We got to the site this morning at 6 A.M., Freddie the Dad was sitting on the pipe and the three young ones who were named Windsor, Lancer and Bridgette were sitting on the nest ledge just acting like kids. It’s so great to see them enjoying life. They are flapping their wings like they are just going to fly off the ledge. Yesterday afternoon we had a Meet and Greet time down under the Bridge, we got there just in time to see Voltaire come into the nest with food, she dropped it off and then flew onto the pipe. About 20 minutes later she flew back onto the nest and started to feed them. We thought maybe she was hoping they would try and feed themselves for a change. This morning they were also sitting the same way as their Dad, with their back turned from us, preening themselves. Words cannot explain how it makes us feel to see them on the nest. Three chicks that are so big and we feel like grandparents. As time goes on we will keep posting and hopefully have more pics for you to see.
We want to Thank everyone who came out yesterday to the Meet and Greet even though we got rained on like crazy.
Look forward to seeing you again real soon.

Linda Woods Reports:
Star finally appears on a vacant building scheduled for major renovation. This is where he stayed for the day. He did take leisurely walks around the parameter,as he was seeing the adult flying over head. He was fed on this location by Rhea Mae.
Around 8:00p.m. Star took flight again heading east over the parking structure and came to rest on the south side of the Graphic Arts building, located on the SE corner of Sheppard Street and Richmond Street. He wasn’t content there and took off again around 9p.m. headed south towards Adelaide St. He circled and ended back on the vacant office building.
This time he is much much lower, just above the construction zone located in the courtyard across from the Sheraton Hotel on Richmond St.
This used to be a out door play area of a children’s day care centre. He will overnight at the day care. He is sitting on the outside of the glass partition, court side.

June 06, 2010 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:
GOOD NEWS!
Star, the missing fledgling has been found! Not too far from home either.
Harry, one of the dedicated volunteers found him a short time ago sitting on the one of the window ledges directly across from the Hotel on Richmond St.
Thanks Harry! and everyone else that came out in the rain to
once again search the area.
Al-tho, not the height of the 43 floors of the Sheraton Hotel, he is still 14 stories above street level.
This building that Star is resting on, is vacant and ready for major renovation. It’s an older building with very deep window ledges that wrap the entire building. That is a blessing,as the bird can walk the entire diameter, sheltering it’self from the intense sun we had yesterday, as well as the wind and rain from last night.
Rhea Mae and Tiago have Star in sight and it appears that Star has a bit of a crop, so he may have had a meal.
This also explains the position Rhea Mae was last evening, cleaning prey. Direct sight line for Star.
Legacy should be the next to fly. Very little down can be seen under his wings and lots of flapping and running of the ledge yesterday.

June 06, 2010 - Burlington - Lift Bridge
CPF Postmaster Reports:
Typically, the young peregrines are challenged to stay aloft for any extended periods of sustained flight and some end up on the ground during their first couple of flights. (Much like a juvenile infant human child leaning to walk for their very first time), as the human infant stands and falls and struggles to stand again in an effort to walk upright.
The young peregrines are no different when they are learning to fly for the first time. They are uncoordinated, still building muscle mass and building strength and confidence. Confidence is EVERYTHING! Some of their first flights are very shaky and has then come to ground.
Because of their heavy baby weights and their lack of any flight skills at this age, the fledglings also completely unaware of any of the usual associated dangers while on the ground. While this is the same historical happening at most peregrine nest sites (urban or non-urban nest sites), the young peregrines are vulnerable to predation and other dangers while on the ground as they have no idea what the dangers are.
The fledge watch team is there to retrieve them from the ground and any potential dangers and return them back to the nest area or a higher elevation where their adult parents will resume their protection and carry on feeding them.

Mark Nash Reports:
A quick check of the nest ledge early this morning has everyone still at home. Cold gusty winds and heavy rain downpour most of the night has made it a very damp cold night indeed, with the rain still continuing this morning with heavy fog still in place.

Mark Nash Reports:
A quick check of the nest ledge early this moring still has little Lorenzo and Legacy on the nest ledge. Heavy rains and wind last night made for a very wet, blustery and cold night and still its around 11 degrees calceus this morning. In comparison to the hot humid weather that we’ve had over the past day, it’s actually very cool!
The search is on to locate ”Star”, the first to peregrine to fledge this season. What a heck of a night to spend your first night away from home!

Frank Butson Reports:
On Friday June 4th,3 Peregrine Falcon chicks were banded. A good crowd of people gathered at the Sunlife Centre, just outside All Trans Financial to witness the event, while others outside watched the adults defend the nest. The 3 chicks were weighed, sexed, aged and banded by Mark Heaton of the Ministry of Natural Resources and his able assistants. Each chick had a black band with white alpha numeric numbers, which notes it as a Canadian bird in a recovery program and a US Fish and Wildlife band put on their legs.
The 3 chicks are:
DotCa: band 13/Y,a male,26 days old,weighing 695 grams,blue tape.
Blackberry:band 14/Y,male,27 days old,680 grams,green tape.

June 05, 2010 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre
Linda Woods Reports:
Toronto Sheraton Centre has had their first fledge of the season. Star took flight sometime early this morning, Unfortunately it was only seen by his siblings. Numerous sweeps of the area throughout the day and at 8p.m. there was still no indication as to where this little guy has flown. The adults were not giving up any secrets either. Food went to the ledge this evening at 7p.m. Lorenzo( yellow ) had his fill and even a second helping. Legacy ( red ) was content not to partake of the evening meal and kept to himself at the other end of the ledge. Lots of flapping by Legacy and looks like he’ll be the next to take flight.
