!!! First Sighting of Chicks from the Ground!!

May 31, 2010 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

What a great day!!  I’ve had my first sighting of two of the chicks from the ground level!  I could see one set of black and white wings flapping in the corner next to the nest box.  Mom is directly seated in front of the nest and was keeping her eye on me as I watched.  And I saw one head peeking around behind her!  Hopefully we still have three chicks and the other is just napping or out of viewing range.

I’ve had word this morning that Milton, the other male is back at the TR site.  Both Jack and TR Mom are there and are aware of his presence.  The female seems to be confused and is going between them but no sign of hostility yet.

The past week has seen our female pretty much on her own, save for sporadic visits by Jack she is feeding them, hunting, guarding and defending the territory on her own.  The other day during the extreme heat I saw her at one point looking quite exhausted and she undershot the nest ledge and almost hit the glass coming in with food.  Thankfully, although still hot and sunny, there has been a nice breeze the past few days and she looks much better today.  She is doing an amazing job on her own and at least now the young are old enough that she can leave them when she has too.

Fledge will be challenging as she can’t be in three places at once if they decide to go at the same time but hopefully we can muster enough volunteers to give them a helping hand should it be required.

!!! Prescott / Ogdensburg bridge hatch!

May 19, 2010 - New York - Prescott-Ogdensburg Bridge

Mark Nash Reports:

Just received great news from Mary Beth in New York state that she has been able to confirm a hatch of at least two hatchlings as of Wednesday May 19th - 2010. They believe that the hatch date was May 17th and confirms that the adults are in fact nesting on the Canadian side!

Hi Mark,
Long time no see. As of today (Wed. 5/19/10) it looks like there are 2 chicks on the Ogdensburg bridge and they have nested on the Canadian side and we wanted to let you know about the chicks in case you are interested in banding them. Hatch date est. to be 5/17/10. I know you are usually very busy at this time but let me know.
Thanks.
Mary Beth

!!! There still around!

May 16, 2010 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

CPF Postmaster Reports:

I believe I saw two peregrine falcons on Saturday, May 16, 2009 flying around and landing on the Canadian Tire Building on the southwest corner of Yonge & Eglinton. I don’t have binoculars so I can’t be sure but I know they have nested there in years past.

CPF Postmaster Reports:

Hello,
I work at the Yonge-Eglinton Center in Midtown Toronto and spotted a Peregrine falcon on the top of the neighbouring building. The falcon took several flights from the top of the building and even hit my office window, but appeared unhurt.
Attached are photos that I took from inside my office on April 20, 2010.

Public Banding Schedule for 2010

May 27, 2010 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Matt MacGillivray Reports:

It’s that time of year again.  The peregrine chicks need to be extracted from the nest, weighed, banded and put back into the nest before they fledge.

Banded Peregrine by Stepy, found in the Canadian Peregrine Foundation pool on Flickr

Banding is an important part of ongoing monitoring for Peregrine Falcons, as it helps to re-identify a specific individual when spotted later.  This allows us to study migration, longevity, mortality, population, territoriality, feeding behaviour and other aspects of ornithology and conservation.  Read more about banding here.

The current schedule is as follows:

  1. Toronto Sheraton Centre Banding - Friday May 28 at 10:00AM (43rd floor, Pinnacle Room).
  2. Etobicoke Sun Life Centre Banding - Friday June 4th at 10:00AM (awaiting confirmation).
  3. Mississauga Executive Centre / MEC Banding - Friday June 4th at 2:00PM (awaiting confirmation).

Bandings are a great opportunity to see young Peregrine Falcons up close, and to learn more about the banding process.  If you are a budding ornithologist, birder, or generally interested in wildlife, a banding is a great experience!

Updates to this schedule will be posted here.
