June 05, 2008 - Hamilton - Sheraton Hotel

Sarah Washington Reports:

Well another chick decide to check out the morning view on the ledge today. This chick was up longer then the other. Then in the afternoon a chick was up on the ledge. Still not sure if same as this morning’s visitor. However, once they get up on that ledge the on street falconwatch will be there to assist. What an exciting time!

June 05, 2008 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

All three kids tend to be sleeping down at the west end of the ledge. Perfect for night time viewing through our night vision camera.
A quick look this moring, and found one looking as if it were going to jump in between the other two that were already there, but changed it’s mind.

!!! One up, 3 to go..

June 04, 2008 - Hamilton - Sheraton Hotel

Sarah Washington Reports:

Well June 3 was a big day for one of the chicks. Madame X had a nice amount of food for the little ones and she seemed to be less inclined to feed them in the scrape today. Instead she sat on the ledge which excited one of the little ones so much that he/she jumped up to join mom. It was only for about 20 seconds but it will not be long that the others follow suit. It takes quite a bit of energy and muscle to get up on that ledge. It is good to see that they are developing nicely.

First up

!!! Banding Day - June 3rd - 2008

June 03, 2008 - Toronto - King Street

Mark Nash Reports:

Today was an exciting day at the 18 King Street nest site for sure. With everything set and ready to go, the banding of the three peregrine hatchlings moved forward a little behind schedule but the day was a huge success due to the efforts of all , especially the crew at Solar Window washing who provided the lift to the nest ledge. With 3 hatchlings successfully removed from the nest ledge , MNR representatives Mark Heaton headed up the banding team and ventured up onto the nest ledge to collect the chicks for banding purposes.

A huge thank you to the management and staff at Avison Young and Slate Properties for providing a great banding space to conduct the banding. The banding day was a huge success despite the delays. Working with wildlife is always a challenge and safety is the first priority, so we did appreciate all those that were patient during the process.

It was a great turn out of attendees along with the many guests and 18 King Street tenants that were on hand to witness and be part of the banding process.

Here are the vital statistics of 18 King Streets newest family members for the 3 young peregrine hatchlings:

Chick #1: Male (named Dougal), weighing in at 673 grams, 28 days old, with a Black marker band #16 over V, with red marker tape,,
Chick #2: Female (named Ely), weighing in at 891 grams, 27 days old, with a Black colour marker band #85 over X, with Yellow marker tape,,
Chick #3: Female (named Gwenny), weighing in at 914 grams, 28 days old, Black colour band #84 over X, with green marker tape

The chicks were given colour coded tape for easy identification by the CPF volunteers to assist with the identification during the fledgling watch.

The CPF would like to thank Avison Young and Slate Properties, Solar Window washing, the MNR and all of the CPF staff and volunteers for another great banding day

!!! Sheraton Centre Banding

June 03, 2008 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

Banding Day at the Toronto’s Sheraton Centre Hotel, turned out to be one the best so far and although the weather didn’t cooperate, everyone in attendance was very pleased with the results.

I would like to extend a huge THANK -YOU to Cynthia Bond, Arlene Rogers, Kay Drummond and all the staff of the Sheraton Centre Hotel for their ongoing assistance, patience and understanding to aide in the successful hatching of the Falcon’s nest. You should be proud, because without you this may not be possible.

Today the attendance was incredible and there was literally standing room only. One had to be creative to jockey themselves to the front of the room, and I wasn’t giving out any secrets on how that was accomplished. Being vertically challenged does help.

The Honorable Donna Cansfield, Minister Of Natural Resources, was the Guest of Honour and she took this opportunity to make a very important announcement of funding for stewardship programs within Ontario to assist with the preservation and extended protection of endangered species.

Also in attendance were representatives from major sponsors and ongoing supporters for the Canadian Peregrine Foundation Educational Outreach Programs and other Peregrine Projects.

To list a few and my apologies at this time if I have missed anyone.

TD Bank Friends of the Environment
Panasonic Canada
Ontario Power Generation
TransCanada Pipeline
Osler Hoskin and Harcourt
Solor Window Washing
and the dedicated volunteers that give their time to assist with the Fledgling Watch at all of nest locations.

A special attendance from a group of ladies from Rochester New York. These ladies are volunteers that assist in monitoring the fledglings at the Kodak site in Rochester.

Rhea Mae, the adult female at this site, was a hatchling in 2006, that these ladies watch grow to fledging, rescued and now see produce young of her own. An opportunity that is rare. A special guest of theirs, from Germany, another volunteer in her own country make the trip to Canada to witness this special event.
It was an honour to have them all attend.

Toronto Sheraton Centre Hotel and the Canadian Peregrine Foundation would like to introduce to you the Peregrine Falcon Hatchlings of 2008

Unity Male 24 days of age and sporting a blue and red “taped” band

Belle Female 24 days of age, wearing a red and yellow “taped” band

Lilly Female 24 days of age, wearing a white and blue “taped” band

The coloured tape is place over the silver US Fish and Wildlife band and the Canadian Wildlife Band is still visible.

At this time the Canadian band numbers are not posted to the website, but are available upon request.

As always, Rhea Mae and Tiago were very much on patrol and did a great job of defending their nest ledge. Stooping and swooping that kept John on his toes until returning the young ones to the adults. On last check, all is well. The young falcons settled down near the nest tray and were fast asleep.

The adults were spotted at various posts on nearby buildings, ready to come to the assistance of the young, should the “predators” return.

It was a great turnout, a wonderful day and an event that won’t soon be forgotten.

Linda

June 03, 2008 - Hamilton - Sheraton Hotel

Sarah Washington Reports:

Well today has so far been a wet day. The Chicks were taking shelter and having a nap. Madame X came in and fed them just after 11A today. They were all eager to go and see her. It won’t be long before they are on the ledge.

Here is a pic of them all wet…too cute!
