Peregrine Display

April 30, 2008 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

CPF Volunteer Reports:

I shall try to keep this report as unemotional as possible. At 4:30 I was on a phone call when my neighbor came running it pointing to the sky. I looked but could not see anything and carried on with my call. A few moments later, two peregrines hove in to sight. At first I thought they were fighting, then I realized they were playing. It was an amazing sight. Close flying, talon tag, upside, rolls, etc. All executed fast and slow. The show lasted almost 15 minutes before I lost them both. Now, things brings out some questions. Via the web I could ascertain that both the Sheraton and King Street eggs were being incubated. So, who are these two birds. For me, there were two other important issues. When the female flew by me the first time, she was slightly lower than my window, going east to west. I am not one hundred percent certain, but she did seem brown rather than grey. Secondly, the male seemed to wobble frequently - and that reminded me of Windwhistler/Spike!! So, that was yesterday’s exciting news.

April 30, 2008 - Toronto - Four Seasons

Harry Crawford Reports:

A male peregrine was on the south-east corner of the CIBC building at 6:10am, remaining there until 6:36am. A female then took up the east CIBC antenna for a brief time at 7:26am. A male returned to the south-west corner of the same building at 7:40am and stayed until 8:05am.

April 29th

April 29, 2008 - Toronto - Four Seasons

Harry Crawford Reports:

At 8:25am, just before I left for work, Hunter was seen on the south-west corner of the CIBC building. When I returned to the area at 1:20pm, he was on the south side of the same building. At 2:20pm, he disappeared. Viewing the Four Seasons from theĀ  orth-east (Hazelton Ave. and Scollard), a female flew in from the east, circled the hotel just below the roof line, and then headed back to the east. She was carrying food the whole time. Just after she arrived, a male (Hunter) followed her in. He landed on the south-east corner of the building and eventually headed east after her. While heading back to Bay and Bloor, I spotted two turkey vultures heading north by north-west, just north of Bloor. They were circling higher and higher and were not challenged. These were likely the recently found Bloor and Sherbourne vultures. At 4:05pm, the adult male was back on the south side of the CIBC building, remaining until 5:25pm.

Shift Change

Hunter was on the south-west corner

April 26, 2008 - Toronto - Four Seasons

Harry Crawford Reports:

Hunter was on the south-west corner of the CIBC building at 7:25am, the north-west corner at 8:50am and gone by 10:05am. A female peregrine was on the south-west corner of the same building at 12:45pm and was still there when I left the area at 1pm.

A female peregrine was on the west side…

April 25, 2008 - Toronto - Four Seasons

Harry Crawford Reports:

A female peregrine was on the west side of the CIBC building from 6:51 until 7:36am when she flew off to the west. Hunter took up the south-west corner of the building for a brief time at 7:55am. The second female was on the west side of the CIBC building from 8:25 until 11:05am. At 9:30am, Ranger was seen on the north side, second from the east balcony, on the Four Seasons. She took off towards the east at 10:10am. Hunter was on the south-west corner of the CIBC building from 11:08 until 11:20am. The second female was on the north-west corner from 11:40 until 12:05pm. Hunter was back on the north-west corner at 1:20pm and was seen on the south side, mid level at 3:27pm, feeding. The second female was on the west side of the CIBC building at 4:10pm and was gone by 5:03pm. At 4:35pm, two turkey vultures were circling the Yonge and Bloor area, probably from the Bloor and Sherbourne area.

Photo from Webcam

April 24, 2008 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

CPF Volunteer Reports:

Checking with my binoculars at 4pm I found an adult standing on the east side of the nest ledge. Checking the web cam, a bird was incubating the eggs. Based on size, I guessed the bird I could see was Tiago. At 4:30 we had status quo. However, as I checked at 4:35, the incubating bird got up and took off - certainly by size it appeared to be Rhea Mae. She was followed imemdiately by Tiago. This shot from the web cam shows the four eggs clearly.

Rhea Mae doing her shift of incubation.

April 24, 2008 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

A quick look see on the nest this morning found Rhea Mae doing her shift of incubation.

I think she may have turned all the eggs into the corner of the nest box, because she appeared a little uncomfortable with her back end on the edge of the nest box. She kept fidgeting, and moving about. I stayed until she settled, but she never fully exposed the eggs for me to see.

Tiago was not in my view at this time. All seems to be going well. Unfortunately I am not able to get a really nice picture this time, she was just too close to viewing port.

Hopefully next week.

Incubation continues

April 24, 2008 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

Incubation continues. I usually see one of the adults sitting on a near by building feeding.

At this time, everything looks to be normal behaviour for this stage of incubation. Although I have not seen the male run off the gulls like he was doing last year. Perhaps it’s a little too early for that.

Four Eggs

April 23, 2008 - Toronto - King Street

CPF Volunteer Reports:

I work nearby and my desk looks out onto the nest ledge so I am able to see them come and go during the day. I was able to save this picture after I looked out the window and saw the mother perched on the ledge. You can clearly see that there are four eggs behind her as she takes a break from incubating them.
