!!! Scarbourgh-Bell Building

May 15, 2009 - Scarborough - Bell

Bruce Massey Reports:

Friday May 15,2009: Went back to Bell, this time with my own Scope, and spent about an hour or so trying to see the Male’s and confirm the Females Bands. Much to my surprise I accomplished something I have never done in 12-13 years of Observation, and that is confirm 2 Band Numbers in one day.

However:  The Adult Male’s band  is Black over Green, 43 over M

The Adult Female’s band  is Black over Green, 91 over V - named Linn from Rochester NY USA

Both Numbers & Letters are in the Upright Position.

Please check back to this Page as I expect Mark will have the ID’s on these birds within the Week.

Sunday  May 17,2009: In area  briefly, both Male & Female on East Side of Bell Building

Mom Resumes Hunting

May 07, 2009 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

Day 9 and Mom has started hunting as of today!  Dad stood guard for about a half hour while she went hunting and she came back in with quite a large sized pigeon!  She defeathered in the nestbox which is not usual for her at this point however the parents were alarming earlier so they must have felt threatened somehow - all I could see in the area were a few Canada Geese however my vision is not as acute as a peregrine falcons!   About an hour earlier both parents were agitated, mom practically threw herself over the chicks while dad stood guard right beside her  for quite awhile.

I had my binoculars downstairs with me today as I wanted to check their legs…no bands on mom as was expected.  Dad was being very coy and wouldn’t show me his legs at all - he stood with his back to the camera!  I swear he was laughing at me !

Enjoying the sun

May 17, 2009 - Toronto - Sheraton Centre

Linda Woods Reports:

A noon hour visit found the four once again in a pile enjoying the sun.   A previous meal is evident in the  nest tray to join  the other consumed meals. I was told it might  be a Blue-Jay head.

And on the 8th Day..

May 06, 2009 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

..they rested!   Too big for mom to cover now, she is standing over them and shading them from the sunshine.  One little missy  is visibly bigger to me than her siblings now and will not sit still, she was even pecking at the egg!!!   Mom didn’t seem troubled by it and just continued to sit in the sun and preen herself .

Not much going on other than sleeping, eating and looking cute!  I am of the opinion that we have 3 girls this years just based on their size, last year our little male was visibly smaller than the 2 females.  But it’s early days yet and time will tell..

Mom Takes a Break!

May 05, 2009 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

Morning feed:  It’s a balmy 6 degrees here this morning so Angel was keeping the young covered this morning as best she could.  The three are getting too big for her to cover completely so three little bottoms were sticking out and an egg!  Later on I went down and they were all alone while mom went for a break and dad flew in and gave them a nice long second breakfast.  This is unusual as she almost always zooms right back in and grabs the food from him and does the feeding herself but perhaps this morning she needed to stretch her wings!  All three were quite hungry and fed very well, once the meal was done they all snuggled up together in a little teepee and started to doze.  Dad left and mom flew in a few seconds later and proceeded to try and cover them up to shelter them from the cool air.  And that is how I left them.

Mississauga Nest-Incubation Proceeding

May 09, 2009 - Mississauga - Executive Centre

Bruce Massey Reports:

Spent 1.5 Hrs At Mississauga Executive Center from 0630-0830 Hrs. It was cool (+5 C) and Windy. Started by walking around Hurontario, Burnamthorpe and when I was 3/4 of the way around Robert Speck, the Male flew out from the North side of #4 and landed the N.W. corner of #3.  Went to car to retrieve Scope, but bird was facing wrong way to obtain Band.  This went on for the next hour or so, and I never did see the Female, whom I assumed never came off the eggs, this isalso the reason I didn’t go up and check on the Nest Camera.  I also didn’t get the Male’s band number as he took great pleasure in Perching with that particular foot.

Parents on High Alert!

May 04, 2009 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

Monday Lunch Time:

Excitement at Etobicoke:  I was observing another feeding when mom suddenly dropped the food, started alarm calling and off she went.  Three little heads all turned and looking like ‘hey where did the food go ’.  So out to the front of the building I went and heard both alarming and saw them circling the neighbouring building rooftops .  Both parents continued circling and alarming for a few minutes, then dad flew to the top of our building and mom flew to the ledge but not into the nestbox.  Finally dad was satisfied that whatever the threat was - it was taken care of for now and he flew to the ledge and is now standing guard as mom continued the feeding.

One of the chicks has been really feisty today, she moved right to the end of the nestbox earlier before mom got tired of her wiggling and promptly plucked her up and put her back in the pile .   She’s very inquisitive and won’t sit still long…!

Sunshine on my Shoulder..

May 04, 2009 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

Monday Morning update:

Angel and 3 fast growing eyases are enjoying a bit of sunshine this morning.  The fourth egg is still beside the young however Angel no longer seems to be bothering to incubate it.  I expect the next few days will see the egg pushed off to the side as the young no longer use it to lean on.  Two feedings have occured already and Angel is now sitting with a chick pile in front of her enjoying the sun!

All is well at Etobicoke Nest!

May 01, 2009 - Etobicoke - Sun Life Centre

Kathy Reports:

Feedings are happening regularly and all 3 chicks are doing nicely.  They are all similar in size thus far but one of them is showing signs of precociousness already…I sense another ‘Screech’ like female!

I just witnessed another good feeding, Angel as always took care to ensure all 3 had their fair share and when I left 3 little heads were pillowed on the remaining egg.  I suspect that like last year, it will remain a resting post!  All newborns need a comfortable place to rest their little heads

!!! Babies Growing like “Jack the Bear”

May 17, 2009 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:

As of yesterday Voltaire is leaving the nest for more extended periods of time and the young are quite content to look around and are beginning to flex their wings. The young are now at a point where they can self regulate their own body temperature and be left for a bit but once Voltaire is back and feeding time is over they sure don’t mind snuggling in with mom.  Freddie is always close by while Voltaire is away. In the mist and light rain and brisk winds Voltaire was at the top of the tower facing into the wind and rain enjoying every second of it. The wind was strong enough that she was virtualy just floating up there. Wow, then in a flash she stoops (dives) off the tower and is streaking past over head in a split second. The high speed precision flying skills of Freddie and Voltaire defy description. People that stopped by the sight were in awe of how wonderfully these creatures are designed. To stand in this close proximity to the fastest creature on the face of the planet is humbling. The chicks are growing like crazy. We have to remember that in aprox 29 days or so they will be the same size and a little heavier than their mom and dad. Their flight paths are incredible to watch.

Special thanks to all our friends old and new. I’ll try my best to keep you posted. Jason Telasco, Jerry Peltier as always thank you for the great pictures. It is hard to sit at the computer when I might be missing something at the nest sight. We will need volunteers to help when the young get ready to fledge.

Keep looking up. Dennis and Gwen and the whole “falcon family”
