!!! Only Two hatches, one Egg

May 19, 2011 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

Today, I was only able to see the original two hatches. One egg appears to be outside the ‘brooding” area. One egg could still be under the camera view, but she is not incubating that egg either. With the nicer weather predicted, it may show me more this weekend.

So,  far only two hatches for King St. I don’t think they other two will hatch since it’s past the predicted hatch dates. But one never knows. It could be like last year, where one egg hatch days after expected. We could still have a little surprise. I’ll keep checking.

Still Out of View

May 17, 2011 - Toronto - King Street

Linda Woods Reports:

Another check on the King St. nest did not show me any new hatch. The two little ones are still tucked under the camera view. I only saw two little white heads poke their heads into the camera view this morning. Hopefully with warmer weather expected on Friday, the adults will move the little ones back into view of the camera.

A Mother’s Bliss at Canada Square

- All Reports

Tracy Simpson Reports:

I was at the Canada Square Building site today in the hopes of seeing whether all three eggs have hatched as of yet.  If it were at all possible, our resident mother falcon would have had a “Do Not Disturb” sign hung on the outside of the ledge as she enjoyed a deep sleep with her precious young tucked beneath her.  In the 2 hours that I was there, she didn’t raise up once and allow me to see what she has hidden beneath her feathers but I was able to confirm two little white rear ends sticking out from underneath Mom.  On a cold and damp day such as today, I can’t blame the chicks for snuggling into the female parent as tightly as space would allow.  I will be back on-site on Thursday as the temperature will be warmer and the skies a little sunnier which should allow me to confirm whether all three have indeed hatched.  Once again, a huge congratulations to the floks at the Canada Square Building and an equally enormous thank you to Neil Armstrong and the staff at Northern Realty Advisors Ltd. for being such incredible hosts of this pair of falcons!!

No baby Bald Eagles in Hamilton marsh

It appears there won’t be baby bald eagles along Hamilton’s Lake Ontario shore this year.

A young male eagle and his older female mate have been spotted snuggling in a nest atop a tall white pine in Cootes Paradise marsh throughout the spring.

But all that wooing hasn’t resulted in eggs, said Nick Kondrat of Burlington’s Royal Botanical Gardens.

“Judging the behaviour of the eagles, they’re not bringing food back to the nest,” he said.

“They’re not really hanging around as much as they would if there were young ‘uns in the nest.”

The male just might not be ready to deliver the goods, Kondrat said.

“You can tell by its feather patterns that it’s in the stage where it’s maturing into an adult eagle, but hasn’t quite reached that stage yet,” he explained. “We’re looking forward to next year.”

Had the majestic birds produced a brood, their young could have been the first homegrown bald eagles on the lake’s north shore in 50 years.

A century ago, bald eagles were a common sight along Lake Ontario. But toxic pesticides slowly killed off most of the population.

By 1980, only four bald eagle nests remained in southern Ontario, said Tys Theijsmeijer, RBG’s head of natural lands. There are now about 32 nests, including areas north of Toronto and near Peterborough, he said.

The birds, whose wingspan is more than two metres, were first spotted in the area in 2009 and naturalists have been hoping they’d start breeding to replenish the local eagle numbers.

!!! Canada Square Celebrates a Hatch!!

May 16, 2011 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Tracy Simpson Reports:

I received a phone call today from Neil Armstrong at Northern Realty Advisors Ltd. informing me that over the weekend the resident pair at Canada Square were successful in hatching 2 of their 3 eggs!!  This is certainly very exciting news as this pair had a late start to the nesting season as they explored several other ledges before deciding on the one they now occupy.  Congratulations Canada Square!!  I will be attending the site over the next few days to confirm whether all three eggs have hatched and to hopefully provide some pictures of the latest falcon family.
