CPF Postmaster Reports:
July 12th - 2011
So today I was only able to watch the nest during the lunch hour. I was able to watch Milton attain great speed during some swoops around the courthouse. The speed also prevented me from getting any really good pictures as tracking him was hard in addition to all the wind. Truss was also seen hanging around a bit.
As Mark knows, after work I went to check out a reported injured falcon that had been trapped on a balcony. The great folks that discovered him were able to capture him in a box and called for help. Luckily the male American Kestral was not injured and I was able to release it in a park 50-75m from the building where he was found on a balcony. Peregrine fledglings are not the only one that needs some help at fledge time.

I attached some pictures from banding day for you! We had a great view from Terrapin Point and visibility was nice and clear. I was watching with John Shiposki.
I took these with a little point-and-shoot through a spotting scope so they are not the best quality but I picked some to send to you that I thought were pretty decent..

CPF Postmaster Reports:
July 7th - 2011
During lunch Truss and Milton perched at opposite corners of the courthouse before Truss retuned to the nest.
In the late afternoon, Milton went off hunting and 20 minutes later returned with what looks like another young Starling. Upon return, Truss took the kill from him and flew off to another part of the roof to feed/pluck feathers from the kill for another ten minutes. The chick began vocalizing as soon as Milton returned but was kept waiting until mom was ready. Truss flew with the kill to the nest where both adult and chick were heard vocalizing. Truss was out of sight, presumably feeding the chick, for ten minutes before reappearing on the ledge where she cleaned her bill by rubbing it on the ledge. She flew off to a higher perch, leaving the kill in the nest area. Milton was circling the nest at this time and stayed on the wing past my departure.

CPF Postmaster Reports:
July 6th - 2011
Milton spent the afternoon snoozing on the East side of the building while Truss was out of sight. At 5pm, Milton left the courthouse hunting. A minute later, Truss returned to the nest; without any food. At 5:28pm she popped out from the nest in a small circular swoop flying very low, so low that I lost her behind a small hill, returning to the nest. Both Milton and Truss normally walk/hop to the ledge before flying. Perhaps she was hoping to surprise a bird with this manoeuver. At 5:35pm Truss left the nest perhaps to try her luck again elsewhere. At 5:40pm Milton returned with a kill. Looks like a young starling. With Truss gone, there was nobody there to take the kill from him and feed the chick; so after about 5 minutes of waiting, he dropped down into the nest with the kill. Vocalizing could be heard at street level. Ten minutes later Milton hopped up onto the ledge and cleaned his beak. He flew to a higher perch and waited until 6:30pm when Truss returned and forced him off his perch. She did not return with food. Milton returned to his afternoon snooze location with Truss left watching the nest.

Dennis Patrick Reports:
Dennis and I Thank Everyone who came out last evening so we could tell you in person what had happened over the past few days. We Thank Dr Sweetman & Dr Howorth the two Vets here in Windsor. Also to Dr Luckwaldt in Scarborough who is an Avian & Exotic Vet. Without all of their help this past weekend poor Lady Gaga would not have received such good care. Also to Mark & Marion Nash at CPF for being there for us. It was sad for all of us. It was good to see you at the Bridge last evening and we saw Spitfire flying around with his parents. To all of our Volunteers, please keep up the good work, without your help we could not do this alone and these beautiful creatures would be on their own.
Thank You again

Marion Nash Reports:
This morning we contacted the OMNR office to discuss Lady Gaga and what was to be done now.
With heavy hearts we are sorry to say she was humanely euthanised today at the vet clinic. I was with her until she Peacefully went to sleep for good.
I know in my heart it was the right desision and this poor little girl is now at peace.
If you see any of our Fledge Watch Team as you drive by honk your horn or give a wave to these folks who are out there looking after your Peregrine family I know they would appreciate it very much.

Kathy Reports:
Was just outside on lunch and both boys and mom were flying around with mom in the lead as usual. Lots of diving and swooping by all. Not sure if she’s giving them lessons or trying to outrun them as they chase and yell after her
I have noticed that since Jupiter’s unfortunate accident, she has been taking them away from our towers alot more than in previous years to several others over the other side of the subway tracks where she can teach them to hunt without risk of them colliding with the glass windows. Several of my coworkers who reside over that way have also reported they’ve seen mom and the boys out there the past two weekends.
Both Hera and Skye are flying so well now that it’s difficult to distinguish them from the parents at times.

Sunday July 10th - 2011 - PM watch report:
By 9:15pm this evening, Baby H had settled down for the evening, resting on the upper ledge of 240 Duncan Mill Rd building quite obviously pooped out with the days activities. During her late afternoon and early evening antics, she made more than seven short flights from building to building without any problems, gaining altitude from the 5th and 6th floor ledges to the upper roof of the 225 Duncan mill road - (the Harlequin building roof top). This roof top is 10 plus floors in elevation. Quest and Kendal were with her (or should I say almost on top of her during most of the flights), and are incredible parents, especially given that they are new parents!
I must add, that after more than 17 years of fledge watching in the streets - (and at many different nest sites), Quest is one tough parent, and certainly a demanding sot! I have NEVER seen a more “nagging” parent, as Quest constantly pursues Kendal around vocalizing at him during most of the daylight hours!! Even the other fledge watch team members have all come and asked us what on earth does Quest want of Kendal????
She is screaming, pursuing and chasing him all the time even after he brings in food!!! This poor little guy never gets any piece and quiet!! Well, what can I say, family rearing is a demanding job,, and the female falcon wears the “feathers” in the family and its obvious that she feels that she needs to keep him on his toes and is making sure that he is attentive at all times!!
WOW, is she keeping him on his toes!!! Oh my goodness!! Is she a nag!!!
Marion and I closed the watch for the day just after 9:30 pm feeling very good about what had been reported by the fledge watch team from earlier events of the day, and very satisfied with Baby H’s progress during the evening watch. She is doing very well indeed, and obviously benefiting from not having any siblings to compete with for her parents attention!!
The low rise office buildings surrounding this nest site with all of the easy to access ledges are a great benefit both Baby H and the parents. It is also a huge benefit to us doing the fledge watch.
The availability of empty parking lots and open unobstructed air space around the three main buildings is very accommodating and makes this fledge watch a very easy process. There is absolutely no weekend traffic and the area is very quiet indeed! Makes for a very stress free watch in comparison to most of the other fledge watches were involved in.
Quest and Kendal are outstanding parents and are staying tight to Baby H.
