!!! WPFW Update

June 14, 2012 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:

Yesterday Freddie and Voltaire chased away a Turkey Vulture. All of the chicks were busy flying, eating, resting, what most kids do.
Today Eddy the youngest one made a good flight upon to the roof near the river followed by one of her siblings. All four of them were fed at least four times during our Watch. As the day went by it was fun to watch them fly around everywhere. We noticed that General Brock and Eddy hang around together and Viper and Twitter hang around together. Around 8:15 P.M. Eddy made a great flight from one end of the parking lot to the other end and landed with ease in the tree higher than the Bridge so we were all quie happy to see that. The chicks are doing great flying around the Bridge.

!!! Not Monday but Funnyday

June 12, 2012 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:

Yes I know it was Monday but here in Windsor it was funny day. Viper was flying around and landed on a truck that was going over the Bridge, he stayed on it for a couple of truck lengths then flew off. Eddy flew on top of a roof and landed on a whirly vent so she was going around and around until it stopped. General Brock and Twitter were flying around with complete ease. Eddy is struggling with her flight skills but with time I’m sure she will be doing great. Freddie and Voltaire are wonderful parents. They are all worth watching flying around. Our Volunteers are doing a great job from daylight to dark, without you we would be lost. Stay tuned for more pictures. Remember wpfw2012@gmail.com if you can join us locally please do so.

!!! Update on Eddy and Viper

June 10, 2012 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:

I just talked to Dennis on the phone and everything is going great, Viper and Eddy are both in the same spot as the other did when they wanted to get altitude, they are near the steps to walk, jump up the steps so they can see the roof and then hopefully know that this is where the others were when they started to fly around and have fun. As of right now we have lots of Volunteers down there and of course everyone is very excited to see that all four chicks are no longer on the nesting site. Dennis and I are so thankful to have the nest tray because we both believe that is what made such a big difference in the chicks this year so again we Thank Mark and Marion for their support with getting us that tray. We will keep you updated.

!!! Another exciting day watching

June 10, 2012 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:

Yesterday morning, one of our Watchers, Vicki phoned us as we were on our way to the Bridge to tell us that Twitter had landed on the street then flew from there to a fence post, no problems in the flying. Then she spent most of the day resting on the right side of the Abutment. Later on in the evening Twitter and General Brock were flying around with ease. Both Viper and Eddy were still in the nest box getting fed. All four of them can be heard when it’s feeding time. It’s fun to see the people that are walking by that are looking up to see what is going on. A lot of them do stop and ask questions and of course Dennis is very happy to tell everyone what we are doing and then we get more Volunteers.
This morning we got a phone call telling us that Viper had fledged on was on the ground in the park across the street and then in a few minutes another call to say that Eddy had fledged and was on the ground as well. Dennis jumped on his motorcycle and drove down to see what was going on. Both of them were fine. Please stay tune as I get more updates I will report them.

!!! Flying Day

June 08, 2012 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:

Just a quick update on our two flying chicks, Twitter and General Brock. They are both flying extremely well, General Brock even flew back into the nest ledge then him and Viper looked like they were helping Eddie get rid of some of the white feathers. We just got an email from one of our Watchers, Marilyn tonight and the word is that all four Twitter, General Brock were both back in the nest with Viper and Eddie. We have a feeling that Viper will be flying real soon.

!!! Twitter and General Brock fledged

June 07, 2012 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:

There’s been so much activity I don’t know where to start so we’ll start with the day before the fledging started. Tuesday, we were there for over five hours watching all four chicks and Mom and Dad. Lots of flapping, very noisy and lots of eating going on. We find this year that Freddie and Voltaire are so much more relaxed and we believe it’s because of the nest box. Thank You to CPF for providing it and placing it when the chicks were being banded last year.
Wednesday we got a call from our early morning Volunteer that Twitter had flown from the nest around 6 A.M. She was on the steps of the buiding next to the parking lot across the street where the nest is situated. She kept on going up until she came to the roof then she stayed there for quite a while resting and looking around. She did a great job flying across the street and landing on the abutment. We watched her walk up the pipes until it got windy and she decided to walk into a perfect little hide away for the night.
This morning we arrived there to find out that General Brock had fledged as well. He was flying around and doing a great job until he came down in the parking lot and proceeded to walk up the same steps as Twitter did the day before. When he reached the roof he flew over to the next building and stayed there for quite awhile just looking around at everything that was going on. Voltaire came in with food for him. A while later he decided it was time for another flying trip which he did and landed on the abutment. When we left he was still there and had been fed by Voltaire while Twitter was on the beams behind the Bridge. Freddy and Voltaire are well aware of where they all are resting. After seeing Twitter and General Brock do so well in their flying we are now looking forward to seeing Viper and Eddy do the same. We have lots of Volunteers this year which makes it less stressful for us. A big Thank You to everyone that shows up to Watch, it makes life easier for us. Lots of people are stopping by because they have heard about it on the radio and T.V. It’s great to have people stopping by to ask questions. Having four of these beautiful creatures is a wonderful thing. We always say “you don’t have to look for nature, it finds you instead.”
Stay tune for more news as these four fly around.

!!! All four doing GREAT

June 05, 2012 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:

We spent over nine and half hours watching the whole family yesterday. We’v noticed that Freddie and Voltaire are hanging around closer to the nest site and also Voltaire came in with a food package and prepared it on the ledge with the four chicks watching. Was that a way of saying “o.k. kids this food has to be prepared before you can eat it and this is the way to do it”. Viper, General Broc, Twitter and Eddy were all very busy preening, flapping, resting and very vocal. Their feedings aren’t as close together as they were when they were just little babies. They were fed four times while we were there. Twice the food was just dropped off and they ate by themselves. One time Voltaire cleaned it in front of them and last time she flew in with the meal already prepared and fed them. When they are full they just walk away. We’re thinking because there is so much food flying around there’s no need to fight over it when the parents bring it in for them to eat. Eddy is losing his white down very fast and the other three are starting to look like their parents. It’s always fun to be there watching them. Nerve wrecking as well when they start to flap and they are close to the edge of the nest ledge. Kids, what can you do????

!!! Eddy still has lots of white fluff

June 03, 2012 - Windsor - Ambassador Bridge

Dennis Patrick Reports:

Friday we were there for a while the four babies were sleeping then it started to rain and we left when it got to the point where we couldn’t see through the windshield because of the rain.
Yesterday we were there in the afternoon, the four of them were sleeping then they all decided it was preening time. Voltaire came in onto to the Church Steeple and with the Biniculars we could see she was very wet, she must have had a shower somewhere and then she did a lot of preening herself. Freddie flew in with food and left right away, it was good to see the four of them eating by themselves. One would pick up the food and the other one would be on the other end and that’s how they ate. About an hour later Voltaire came in with food and fed the four of them like she usually does. Viper, Twitter, General Broc and Eddy are getting very big. They are always busy trying to get rid of the white fluff.
