!!! Canada Square Fledglings All flying High June 18th

June 19, 2021 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Marion Nash Reports:

When Bruce arrived this morning he was able to find 2 chicks on the nest building and believed they were Nathan and Coco but once again Ayala was playing hide and seek so he whet on the search but no luck. With the overcast it was impossible to see tape colors you need them to show the tape band and the sun has to be shining on them.
When the rain started to come down hard and having no place he could take cover and watch the birds he decided to head home for a while until it let up. We used to duck inside the Police station when it rained but it’s closed to the public now due to COVID. When he arrived back after the rain again he had 2 fledglings only.
Mark and I arrived for the night shift and Bruce was again out on the hunt for Ayala and 2 chicks were on the nest building.
When Bruce joined us he told us that he had also not seen Haven (mom) all day. I know Haven well enough that she would not be away that long unless she was keeping an eye on one of her chicks so if we find Haven we would find Ayala.
By 8:00 PM Haven finally flew in from the north landing on the RioCan building and was joined by Nathan who came off the nest building yelling for food and the other fledgling ( Coco or Ayala) was still on the nest building also yelling for food. Remember we still had not confirmed a band color for that girl yet.
Meanwhile since Haven had flown in from the north Bruce decided to take a look for Ayala north on Young perhaps Haven had been watching her there somewhere.
While Bruce was on the search Mark and I saw Haven fly south on a hunt and minutes later return with a food package and another fledgling was following her. She landed on the RioCan building and gave the food to Nathan the other fledgling following her landed beside them.
Now we have all 3 chicks. The chick on the nest build tried to fly over to the RioCan building to join them several times but just could not make the top. On her 3rd try she was again too low and bumped the windows for a 3rd time and managed to cling to a window frame then flew off towards the nest building looking like she was going to try for the 4th time to circle back to RioCan but Haven knowing she was not ready for that flew out to her and bumped on her back and put her down on the nest building for a safe landing.
Based on what we had seen over the last few days we now think the chick on the nest build who could not make the landing on RioCan was Ayala. She is flying well now and will eventually get that last bit of altitude she needs to keep up with her siblings, the other 2 are a day or 2 ahead of her in skills.
With no fear of any of them not getting off the ground if they came down we are now switching over to spot checks at this site and moving on the Mount Sinai fledge watch.

!!! Ayala Found

June 17, 2021 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Marion Nash Reports:

Canada Square update on Ayala.

Bruce just got a call from Jody at Security Ayala has been found. She is sitting on the AC chiller at the upper parking near the entrance alive and well. Both her and Coco are still low so it’s going to be an interesting afternoon and evening. The good news is we know where she is and so does security and the parking attendants so the more eyes on the better.

Update on Coco at Canada Square

June 17, 2021 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Marion Nash Reports:

Coco finally fledged. Yesterday late afternoon while Bruce was on watch at Canada Square Coco flew low over Duplex heading north and Bruce lost sight of her. When he went to take a look for her she was nowhere to be seen. Shortly after she managed to make her way back to the police station roof across from the nest building.
Mark and I arrived and she was still there running back and forth obviously not happy with her new spot, looking back at the nest and trying to get the courage to fly back home.
With this building roof only being one floor up and not much wind to assist her flight we expected she would end up coming to ground nope! She took flight about an hour later heading back to the nest building and although she did gain height it was not enough and she bumped the windows of the 5th floor of the nest building and landed on the mezzanine the same place her sister Ayala had landed on her first flight. Mark put on his safety boots, hard hat and orange vest and went over to the construction site below her to speak to the site night foreman and we worked out a plan and permission to access the site to rescue her if she came down there. By 9:00 PM she had settled down to sleep. We stayed watching her until dark and reluctantly headed home.
I got a text from Bruce early this morning and Coco was still in the same spot we left her safe and sound. I hope she makes a better flight today and gains more altitude. I will be joining Bruce this afternoon on the watch stay tuned for more pics and information tonight.

!!! Canada Square June 115th Afternoon

June 16, 2021 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton

Marion Nash Reports:

After her fledge and low landing Ayala went MIA. Bruce looked down to answer a text and when he looked up again she was no longer on the walkway one floor up. He walked around Canada Square down Eglinton and Young st but did not find her on the ground or on any low ledge. I did the same thing once I got there but no sign of her, Bruce took another look around in the evening before dark but no luck. Hopefully she will turn up on her own tomorrow it won’t be the first time a fledgling has done just that leaving us to wonder where on earth they were. Her brother Nathan on the other hand is flying wonderfully and has been to several high roof tops today and has made at least a dozen flights with good targeted landings. Her sister Coco is still on the nest ledge but is ready to take her first flight. should be soon.
