May 12, 2014 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton
Marion Nash Reports:
I arrived at 12:20 to find Stormin on the scrape. He was dozing and seemed quite unaware of things. I think this was proved when ten minutes later I noticed Haven on top of the north wall. I had not seen her arrive; she may have been there all along! She preened her feathers and cleaned her talons and Stormin dozed on!
After twenty minutes of this activity Stormin was woken from his daydreams when Haven hopped to the middle of the top of that wall and disappeared from sight. He chupped. She ignored him. A minute later she was gone from my sight. I think she had taken flight.
At almost 1:00pm Stormin called again several times but there was no response. Then he began to move the pebbles from in front of him! He dug his beak in and pushed them aside, picked up some and dropped them in another spot and dragged a few to his chest.
Periodically he chupped his annoyance or something. Still no response so he did a 180 degree turn and that was when the trouble started. He just could not get those four eggs to stay underneath him. First one egg popped out then another. He’d get those two under him but another one popped out from somewhere else. He really was busy !
He did another 180 degree turn back to the original position and attempted to sit on the eggs. No go! So he got up and pushed one egg under but another popped out elsewhere. I could feel his frustration. He moved over to cover that escaped egg and one on the other side appeared.
Eventually, still chupping periodically, he arranged three eggs in row sort of the length of his body, did another 180 degree turn and sat down. But that fourth egg just would not fit. I have no idea why not because when I arrived all four eggs were hidden. Anyway the fourth egg was up around his left shoulder and then he REALLY called.
Two minutes later Haven appeared on the ledge in front of him. He chupped some more, struggled to get up off the eggs and then was gone!
Haven just stood there and it was all I could do not to laugh.
She had four eggs at odd angles and not at all close to one another, there were little scrapes around the big scrape and she had to re-organise this *mess*.
No problem for Haven she simply sat down and pulled the eggs under her, shuffled herself a bit and nudged an egg under with her beak. Done!

Marion Nash Reports:
Bruce and I managed to get a peek at Haven who was NOT giving up the number of eggs she
was incubating, well not until Stormin arrived. The minute he landed, she was gone. He muttered
and shifted and shuffled feathers, pebbles and eggs alike and finally settled in. Canada Square
definitely has four eggs and Haven and Stormin are in serious incubation.
In 2010 we had four hatchlings, Cyclone, Typhoon, Tara and I cannot remember the fourth name.
In 2011 there were three hatchlings. This was when Stormin came in as *step dad* and helped
Haven raise Luke, Chester and Buzz
In 2012 Haven and Stormin raised three hatchlings, Simcoe, Solar and Brisk. This was Stormin’s
first year as a real dad and the scrape was in a different spot.
In 2013 three hatchlings, Ramjet, Tinia and Imagine, were raised back in the original scrape.

Marion Nash Reports:
went out today and spent 2 hours observing. Nothing much happened.
Haven was on the south face of Rio-Can most of the time. The first time she flew it was south on the west side of Canada Square, across the south end of the building and then she emerged flying east along Eglinton before turning around and coming back towards Rio-Can. She flew north and disappeared only to show up over Rio-Can and the Eglinton/Duplex intersection. She disappeared again for a while and then flew back to Rio-can from over 53 Division. She perched for a while and preened and stretched often before flying again and she did not re-appear before I left. I did not see Stormin at all.
Cheers

Great news to report this evening. I stopped in at Canada Square today to check in on the resident adults and found Haven in the west ledge, same ledge as last year, laying down. Stormin was on the top of the wall above the nest and occasionally vocalizing to her. For a brief moment she stood up and revealed the first egg that was beneath her. Congratulations Canada Square on your first egg!!

Bruce Massey Reports:
I stopped in on Friday for a check in at the Canada Square nest site for the presence of eggs. When I arrived I met up with Neil from Northam Realty and we headed up to the nest ledge level for some observations. I checked the west side scrapes and there were not any eggs as of yet but both adults were seen. When I left and went outside, I found the female on the northeast corner and the male on an east ledge. The female took off down Eglinton on a very low hunt, about light standard level, and returned shortly back up Eglinton. Both adults then flew into the eastern ledges and disappeared. We will check in again next week as they are close to laying eggs and to see which ledge they choose this year.

A huge thank you to Murray Shields for sharing this fabulous photo taken when he was at Canada Square. Murray had a visitor outside the 16th floor window and was able to take a photo of Stormin roosting on the ledge. Thanks so much to Murray for the photo and update!

January 14th - 2014
A huge thank you to Rob for his observation report and photos, we have identified both peregrines via their leg band numbers from his photos, -
The Black banded peregrine with the solid black band 63 over X and the Yellow tape on the silver USFW band on the other leg is one that was banded on May 24 2012, produced at the Canada Square nest site here in Toronto in 2012 as a hatchling, - named Simcoe, (produced at the Canada Square nest site is a the Yonge & Eglinton nest site here in up-town Toronto). You can see the history of the nest site on the CPF web site - http://www.peregrine-foundation.ca/w/c/sightings/toronto-uptown-yonge-and-eglinton
The larger female peregrine in your photos, is a USA produced peregrine, (the one with the Black over Green band – 73 over AW). The Black over green/ 73 over AW peregrine was Hatched 2012, a Female, Her named is Alfrieda, named after one of the architects of the Central Terminal in Buffalo NY USA
Rob Reports:
Sighting January 14, 2014 at the lakeshore in Whitby, Ontario, at the waters edge in Lynde Shores Conservation Area.
Two Peregrine Falcons were resting in a tree by the lake’s edge. After some stretching, they flew off one at a time towards the East.
There are many ducks and also many small birds in the area as they are constantly fed by visitors here.
Bands:
One bird had a silver metal band on the right leg and a black over green on the right leg. The number on the black was 73 but the letters on the green were not very clear, I believe it may be AW (see pictures).
The other bird had a yellow band on the right leg and an all black band on the other. This one was clearly 63/X .
Please feel free to use the attached pictures. I can send higher resolution pictures if needed.

Marion Nash Reports:
I was out briefly, without binocs or camera, and saw two peregrines on the balcony railing on the Canada Square building. I dashed home, willing them to stay put, and returned armed with camera and binocs. They were in the same spot but I only managed a few bad pictures before they flew. Both flew around the west side of Canada Square. One disaappeared from my sight whilst the other one flew to the top of the mast on the building housing Canadian Tire. I did not manage positive ID but am making the assumption that I saw Haven and Stormin, based on the fact that their favourite perches were used. ***

Saw the pictures from Lyn and yes it looks like Stormin and Haven. Can’t make the landscape picture fit to post it sorry.
